What Happens When Two Different Blood Types are Mixed Together?

- Blood is packed with red blood cells.
Even though all human blood might look the same, there are actually different kinds called blood types.
Blood types are based on special markers on the surface of red blood cells. These markers, known as antigens, are made from sugars, proteins, and other molecules, and everyone has their own unique set.
There are several systems used to classify blood types...
The best-known are the ABO and Rh blood types, which are very important when it comes to safely giving someone a blood transfusion.
Today, we took a closer look under a microscope to see what happens when we mix blood from different ABO blood types!

I’m a B+, and my mother is a B-. We had an RH incompatibility, and my mother was given a tiny bit of my blood and some sort of medication in an IV in order to ensure that if she had any more babies, neither she nor they would be affected by RH Incompatibility. I’m sure that doctors do something more modern (or at least less bloody) now. I was born in the dark ages, otherwise known as the 70’s.
That condition is called Erythroblastosis Foetalis
I am O- and my husband is O+. I had to get a rhogam shot while I was pregnant with our 2 kids, just incase they had my husbands blood type. They both got my blood type though.
@G0L_D_Fsh Because if the child was O+ and some fetal blood leaked over the placenta, it would cause immunization in the mother resulting in antibodies that could pass back through the placenta and target the blood of the child which would be dangerous. The drug hides the surface marker on the fetal red blood cells thus immunzation does not occur.
@G0L_D_Fsh because there is blood transfer between mother and child in the body and i think in this case there was a chance they were incompatible or something
@G0L_D_Fsh in case of father being (-) and mother being (+), no complications are observed. But in case of mother being (-) and father being (+) and foetus (child) being (+), some of the blood (or antigens) mix with the mother's blood and she becomes sensitized. In subsequent conception, in absence of Rhogum inj. The foetus RBC is destroyed causing Jaundice and such

Fr😅
yea...
"Lightly" pricking your finger can still hurt a lot. Sometimes it doesn't hurt too much but also tends to bleed less then too - source: I'm diabetic and have to prick my fingers to test my blood sugar far too many times every day 😅
those things hurts a lot so it's understandable
@@narmowolf4201 for real.. sugar problems run in my family and I tend to run hypoglycemic (low) so i have to check mine when I'm feeling off.
The tester I use is loud when clicked only because it's the spring-mechanism is cheap, but the pain isn't so much related to the sound, just the needle being cheap/blunt since I got the cheaper brand. My grandmother's which is way more expensive didn't hurt as much when I've had to use theirs in a pinch. She's diabetic so needs to track hers more often ^^
It’s so cool how red blood cells literally are donut shaped.

Never ever punch the fingertips (full of nerve endings and very painful) but on the sides, for a drop of blood. Word of a diabetic! 😂
Really? Nobody told me that. (newly diagnosed) My fingertips always freaking hurt when I do the testing bc nobody's shown me how to do it or what I'm supposed to be doing at all. *very frustrated*
@@kme Give it a try and tell me!
@@Mr.Cockney I will, thx. I always struggle to get anything out of my fingertips too. I usually have to do it 2-3x before I get anything out. It's very painful and frustrating. I might go to a different dr and see if they can help me with everything, bc my current GP isn't really supporting me. Idk wtf I'm doing, basically.
@@kme I agree. Moreover, perhaps your struggle to obtain a drop of blood is related to this. Because it is very painful to poke the fingertips you also give not enough value to the device with the needle and thus the lack of blood. But if you hit the side of the finger you can use more penetration achieving both more blood and less tries.

Type O is universal for blood.
While AB can only take from others in blood.
However, AB plasma can be given to any other type. Its the opposite for plasma.

I'm a blood type O but I kinda hate it for the reason mosquitos like to follow me around and suck my blood. I have a lot of mosquito bites and scratches due to it. (Mosquitos loves Blood Type O. For them, it's a delicacy LOL)
On the other side, the fact that we have A and B antibodies protects us from some stuff! For example, type 0 get malaria much more mildly than type A
It’s the opposite for me. My friends were bitten badly by mosquitoes (while visiting a hot springs) but I was never bitten once. And then I thought the mosquitoes must hate my O blood type 😂
@@nominaeBecause even though a study showed mosquitoes preferred the O blood type when given the choice of it and A blood type, there was no exact correlation between blood type and their attraction. There's also the factor that O+ blood is the most common worldwide, so more people will relate to getting bitten by mosquitoes and sometimes associate with their blood type.
Obs: I live in Brazil, tropical country with a lot of mosquitoes and I barely get bitten by then, even when my house - on summer - got swarmed with them.
I'm O positive too and I always get eaten alive in the summer whenever I go outside lol
I'm type O- and mosquitoes avoid me, rather massacring others around me
The blood type personality test really took off in Japan, and it is even more popular than something like a zodiac sign is here. If you sign up on any dating app in Japan, it asks your blood type for this reason. @@HyperVanilo what?
Ironically enough, there actually might be a scientific explanation behind the people with blood type O (supposedly) being gentler.
Type O is the blood type of the original humans, the oldest one.
Antrophologists have found evidence that when we were hunter gatherers, we were more egalitarian and gentler in general.
With the rise of agriculture around 10 000 years ago, some people started accumulating more wealth than others and used that to have control over other people. the concept of authority and people ruling over others, as well as money and warfare, was born there.
The diets changed as well as we started eating more grains, and the blood with it. And we started becoming generally more violent as well.
It wouldn’t surprise me if people with type O blood also retained other genes from our gentler ancestors.
(This is still mostly speculation tough so take it with a grain of salt)

Although O blood type is considered the universal donor, there is a much more universal dinor than O blood type and that is rh null. That blood type is devoid of any antigen that it can donate on both rh positive and rh negative blood type....
I have AB , universal taker of blood, :D

I think mosquitos like type O blood cause they won’t get an upset tummy no matter what they had for lunch.
Also, ABO antibodies (anti-A, anti-B) are formed naturally after being born. Rh antibodies (anti-D) are formed via exposicion like; transfusions or pregnancy (the mother). Just wanted to share what was tought to me recently. Love the video.
can you explain it a bit more? I like learning about biology :)
Someone who recieved blood transfusion from a donor with a non compatible blood type, especifically the less common ones (low frecuency or non ABO) can develop antibodies from that, and then it gets harder for that person to receive any blood. Even if they share the same ABO group.
@@hangezoeSNK
so basically we have many antibodies which our immune system makes to help us survive :). They are separated into different classes of antibodies based on their structure.
So when we are born we are given genes from our parents. This includes our blood type. Everybody has a blood type; A, B, O or AB. This is the ABO system. It is the biggest blood system we know, and the most immunogenic meaning it causes us the most harm if there is incompatibility between the blood types.
In our plasma we have antibodies to the other blood types that we DO NOT have. This occurs naturally from the day you are born you are predisposed to having those antibodies in your blood. There is nothing that we can do to change that. These antibodies are class IgM.
We also have the 2nd most immunogenic blood system called the Rh system. This determines whether we have a + or - beside our blood type. If we have a positive beside our blood type this means we have the antigen (A+, B+, O+, AB+). If we have a - beside our blood type then we DO NOT have the antigen and are at risk of making the antibody. We do NOT naturally have this antibody in our system, meaning we have to be exposed to it to get it. We can get it through 2 ways, pregnancy or transfusion. This antibody is class IgG and CAN cross the placenta and hurt our babies.
Hope that helps :)
Really? So if the mom has Rh+ wouldn't she have only Rh+ babies? I'm trying to figure out how I came out Rh- from a mom who is Rh+ 🤔
@@celticphoenix2579 It's possible that your dad was Rh -.
So it means type AB has the most highest survivality in war and accidents as they are compatible to take in any blood type while type O is the one suffering.
it still depends on the major histocompatibility test, or even the minor histocompatibility test
Doubt it. The body can tolerate a little amounts of different blood types. If you have lost a lot of blood, you need your own type. And AB is a rarest one.
His friend really enjoyed the blood 💀
2:50 Isn't type O universal donor, so shouldn't that be the reason that you didn't see much of a reaction
But there was. He didn’t specify whether either blood was negative or positive. people with O- blood are universal donors whereas O+ blood are only compatible with other positive blood (A+, B+ or AB+). So what we might be seeing is a B- blood reacting with a O+ blood.
O-type blood contains anti-A and anti-B antibodies in the plasma. What you're seeing is the anti-B antibodies in the O-type plasma reacting with the B-type red blood cells.
O- is a universal donor, in that it can donate RBCs to anyone. But it should be separated out before transfusing for no reaction to occur.
O type is universal donor, not acceptor. @@n-steam is right
So basically we have whole blood which is broken down into 4 components:
1. Red Blood Cells
2. Plasma
3. Platelets
4. Cryoprecipitate
To keep it simple, type O IS the universal donor. But this only applies to type O red cells.
As another comment stated, the reason you saw the reaction was because he mixed whole blood not just red cells. This means that the antibodies in the Type O plasma reacted with the Type B red cells.
Hope that helps !
O neg is a universal donor. As a 13yrold, I'm 72 now, my parents and siblings were asked to give blood when they were researching blood for the rhesus factor. We are all the same O neg which we wer told was unusual. My aunt was working for the team at Liverpool University doing the research and volunteered us!
2 people was harmed in the making of this video.
Yeah, don't know about this thing claiming the Type O people to be more gentle, but I am type O and when I first heard about it and being an universal donor, I got really happy to be able to help someone
Since you mixed type O with type B, isn't it normal that there was little to no reaction visible under the microscope? I don't think it was because of the concentration of the antigens in blood vs in testing solution, but more that Type O doesn't have any antigens, so there's nothing for type B cells to react with. If you had a type A friend laying around and mixed his blood sample with type B friend's, you could probably have obtained a much more pronounced reaction.
Yes, that make sense
But type O blood contains antibodies against both A and B antigens? Or is that only if you have been immunized? Blood bags are cleared of antibodies but here it is fresh blood?
@@danielcarlsen9228 exactly what I thought
@@littleleo7072 Yeah, so if you give B-type blood to a O-type patient it will end badly.
@@danielcarlsen9228 If I recall correctly, you will have small amounts of antibodies in your blood for antigen you don't have, but your body doesn't ramp up production of these antibodies until the foreign antigen is detected. The reaction to the blood extraction is hilariously satisfying.

It'll be such a shame when the cataclysm happens and we lose technology to where blood loss will be even more critical and hard to fix for any survivors :(
Lacking a proper testing set-up, would you say that the reaction is strong enough that you can determine compatibility just by mixing the blood of two different people together and seeing what happens or would you need a microscope?
Would be interesting for a novel idea where the characters don't have access to the necessary facilities to do proper testing.
