Ran into this bad boy at the Fort Carson Military Super and Sprint. I didn't think to look for tips for this before hand but conquered it both days. Bent arm and pulling the grips towards you is the way to go for sure. Great addition to the obstacles! Aroo! Aroo! Aroo!
I've watched American Ninja Warrior, and saw a similar obstacle, Helix Hang (Double Helix). It only works when your arms are in V's, but not in I's. Straight arms make the next rung hard to reach. I think it's good to use the truss, because the next section doesn't spin with the previous section. It's even out of reach past the truss.
Gotta be super careful that someone isn't on your same segment or about to stall out or you'll fight each other on the twist. I encountered this in Lake Elsinore and that was my first time seeing this obstacle. This video was great. I went over hand forward and that also worked but the down side is having to twist sideways at the cross bar segments which makes starting the next segment tough. So....let the guy in front of you finish or fail and then go and think about using this sideways grip move.
Did this just this past weekend in LA. The video shows bare metal handles; at the course there were large velcro/fabric coverings over each handle. I'm not sure why they were there; we hadn't hit any water yet, so they weren't absorbing mud/water, and it wasn't cold outside (maybe 60-65 degrees), so they weren't preventing (ex:) ice-cold metal from contacting bare hands. What these things *DID* do was (a) make the handles fatter/wider, thus making it harder to get a good grip on the handles, and (b) were loose and twisted around the handles, making your grip slip even more. PLEASE get rid of these before the LA Stadium Sprint!
I didn't put two hands in the handle. The key as stated is bent elbows and a locked in grip because the bar will rotate in your hand as you shift your weight to your lead hand. It may be easier for some to skip the truss between sections.
Great video! 👍🏻I made the mistake of using an overhand grip with both hands (instead of using one underhand and one overhand grip) and going on the side with the handles going away from me. Ugh. 😩 I started swinging around like a speed bag. 🤣
This obstacle ripped open a blister on both hands. Had to stop about 3/4 through it! Pretty tough one. I love it though!! Way to keep challenging us!. :)
I go sideways, but nit bent arms, I'm not that strong, I just have a good sideways pendulum motion, handles coming towards me like that, and off u go. 2 days in a row nailed. If you got the swing you can reach the next handle up.
ah, bent arms. That might work next time. I made it about half way both days during the Virginia Spartan Super and Sprint but I started out with hanging arms. I want to try this one again!
I only made it half way and got stuck at the truss. I didn't know there was a possibility that we weren't supposed to use that! Anyway, I was going backwards, and doing fine until the crossbars on the truss confused me. I swung around trying to orient myself to be able to start on the second roller, and ran out of grip strength before I could get going again :) Plunk!
I struggled with fitting both hands on one handle, or having to reach the front hand out past a handle to leave an empty one to grab with the back hand. One technique generally more successful than the other?
doing my first beast this weekend. so nervous of this obstacle. when i did a super i actually failed at the monkey bars because of my sweaty hands and crappy grip strength, been practicing on monkey bars a lot and got it down well, but glad i saw this video since the technique is so different here
Joe Di, I see elite athletes using a back to the bell method, what is the thought process on this method? Have 2 more races this year and see this as a major obstacle for me. Aroo!
Tom, many of our racers have adopted this method, and it has proven to be much faster. Rather than swinging back and forth and side to side, your momentum is already carrying you in one direction. Take advantage of that.
They need to clarify wtf you can and can't do... 4 times I've attempted this obstacle, only once did I succeed. Because I was told all 4 times, no using the truss. The 3 times I failed, was transitioning past the truss without touching it (same as the successful attempt, I just got lucky and grip strength held up).
Keep at it. Lotion frequently. When callouses start to build up, use a pumice stone once a week to shave them down after a shower one day. Listen to your hands and maybe take breaks from monkey bars and pull-ups when they are feeling a little raw. This problem never goes away but it can be contained.
I tore my hand and slipped off the second-to-last handle, and the next two events were Bucket Brigade and the rings. That hand tear cost me 60 burpees :P
I tore my hand on the last ring of the multi rig 7 miles deep in the super this weekend then I did the spear throw and the medics finally got to me and said they couldn't treat me unless I went back to the medic tent so I got them to give me some tape and moved on to the bucket brigade, cargo climb, then tried to climb the rope but couldn't grip with the tape and at that point I didn't even bother trying the monkey bars that were 20' away so I had 60 burpees over a torn hand also😖
@Paul Baker you can use the truss but some of the volunteers have no idea what the rules are I say go for it and if they try to penalize you just move on its not like they can stop you
Without the truss, some of us aren't physically capable of reaching the other side. Hard to consider it cheating if it makes the obstacle possible and is permitted by the rules.
@@MeganZavieh I didn't even consider going right past the truss, it is quite a long reach, especially if the next handle is rotated at an inconvenient angle. Hmm
Great video! 👍🏻I made the mistake of using an overhand grip with both hands (instead of using one underhand and one overhand grip) and going on the side with the handles going away from me. Ugh. 😩 I started swinging around like a speed bag and kerplop. 🤣
Good to know we can use the truss. Please make sure volunteers know that at races..

I bet you jumped on early.

I did the same thing!

use gloves next time
Thanks for the tip. Aroo!
Easiest way to do Twister IMHO is backwards, keep your arms bent, and DON'T STOP.

I always rip the calluses of my hands.... what might I do differently?
I end up using rubberized gardening gloves so I don't shred my hands.
I struggled with fitting both hands on one handle, or having to reach the front hand out past a handle to leave an empty one to grab with the back hand. One technique generally more successful than the other?
This is certainly a cool twist on things.
We see what you did there.
This was the hardest part of the Fort McDowell, Super!
Nearly impossible in the rain at Ohio, too slippery!

Try this technique to change things up, too.

Other than this obstacle, how did you do in the beast?
Nice video! but the twister in some races are not similar; somes have more distance between grips and dont allow to use the truss
Me and a buddy list calluses to this :p
yeah, that one was a pain. Thanks for the tip!
The only challenge is the 2nd race I did, was raining hard that day. So it made it hard to grip to the bar
Can someone explain how it is physically possible for the "handle to go away from you"?
Depending on which way you are facing, when the bar rotates, the handles will either move towards your body, or away from it.
Oh, I see.
Joe Di, I see elite athletes using a back to the bell method, what is the thought process on this method? Have 2 more races this year and see this as a major obstacle for me. Aroo!

i always end up using the bar that the handles are on .. i make it is that ok
Pretty sure you aren't allowed to use that bar!
They had black fabric pieces to prevent the sun from making it too hot, and that made it more difficult. I would rather have the handles hot.

but, arent you using too much biceps for your body weight on this? usually that is a weak muscle
I was soo close in Hawaii
My hands hurt so bad. How do I train my hands?

Got a 30 burpee penalty for holding the truss at my last Spartan Sprint! Thought that was a bit harsh...
@Paul Baker you can use the truss but some of the volunteers have no idea what the rules are I say go for it and if they try to penalize you just move on its not like they can stop you
any of these kinds of obstacles are nearly impossible to make when its rainy and muddy :D but well a good 30 burpees are never a bad idea :D :D
Twister is tough! I've done all kinds of races: half ironman, 5k swim....Only after Twister I really wanted to puke.
Not a fan of this method. You have to touch each handle twice and double your energy and the chance of ripping your hands.
I feel like the double touching would balance out swinging your body from one side to the other. Idk, I'll find out tomorrow!
I had ALL the issues with this obstacle 😂😂 I wish I saw this video before my first race but will definitely come in handy for the next one!
Going backwards us easier!
yep, confirmed!
made the mistake of kicking the bell, had to do my first set of burpees at the end ugh...guess that was a rule change from last year?
Hey Chris, yes we no longer allow kicking of the bell for racer safety reasons. You'll get it next time!
Yeah apparently some ninja kicked a bell off into someone's dome!
Can i kick the bell? :D
cant, will incur burpees......
Uhhhh. No. Thats a horrible way to do it. Go backwards. Easy peasy.
Not gonna lie, I think using the truss is cheating, but that's just my opinion, I'm sure it will help a lot of people get past that transition.
If using the truss is allowed, it isnt cheating.
Without the truss, some of us aren't physically capable of reaching the other side. Hard to consider it cheating if it makes the obstacle possible and is permitted by the rules.
