- Today we do a quick clean-up of a pair of Klein Linesman Pliers I bought for Two dollars at the flea market. They were unusable as bought and after about twenty minutes of labor they now work as good as new...

A friend of mine restored a screwdriver to absolute better than new perfection… he put a mirror finish on it, and a beautiful timber handle that was as shiny as anything. And then seriously, he used an old crappy screwdriver because he didn’t want to wreck his pretty one!! there’s definitely a lot to be said for an effective and solid resto, but not making it a work of art to be admired and not used. Excellent job. 🏆
Clean and ready to us without them in showcase condition is the perfect way for us tradesmen, after all we don't want the customer to think we never use them lol
until I found your channel I was about to throw out many of my dad's tools I inherited. most were, at least I thought, were beyond use. I admit that I have been careless with them. You have given me a desire to bring them back "alive" to remember watching my dad use them. before i tackle any restoration on them I'll peruse your older videos. thx again for your channel
I was out digging in the yard and I dug up a genuine Crescent wrench that had apparently been buried for years. I sand blasted it and wire brushed it and soaked it in a can of WD40 for a couple of days , and since the chrome plating was destroyed, I painted it. I got about a year of good use out if it. Then the knurled adjustment knob fell out due to the knob shaft being rusted through. These tools have a lifetime guarantee and I brought this tool to the Crescent dealer and they gladly exchanged my broken tool for a new one.

I've carried Klein tools since I started in the trade 24 years ago. They're top notch.
I like your procedure, and it makes me feel better that I'm not the only guy that buys flea market tools and cleans them up. I've even cleaned up and returned to service a bunch of old tools that belonged to my Dad and both Grandfathers. It is a sense of accomplishment.
One thing on the pliers though: I don't particularly care for the plasti dip handles, so I cut them off, and replace with the Klein Koat handles. That's what I'm used to, and what I prefer on mine.
Hello Gummi Bear! That's so funny you mention that because I just ordered a pair of the Klein Koat handles for a upcoming video on plier handle replacement options! I recently discovered you and your wonderful restoration variety. Sir! you got me hooked!!. I am reaching my retirement at age 70 and now believe I have found my next chapter to keep me busy. I am just a weekend fix up guy so I have a lot of tools that have been ignored for years. So I am now going through my worst tools. Quick and easy repair of a $35-$45 set of Klein linesman pliers. After looking at 20 videos this is the first I'd say is really good value to labor effort and cost of repair.

I found some old Klein's Linesman's in my laundry room last month. They were somewhat rusted, not as bad as the ones on here but I showed my coworker them and said he'd fix em up for me. And man, what he did to them, he made them look like they had a chrome finish and they looked so nice and you could still see the logo on it too!
Great Score , that's about a 40 dollar pair of Klein's these days .I mixed up my first batch of Acetone and Trans fluid Sunday , it worked like a charm , I freed up a Mule Drive clutch lever for a 74 Sears Suburban garden tractor I'm working on , it had been out in the weather for over 15 years , and wouldn't move , after an hour it freed up , I took it apart and cleaned , primed and painted it , Thank You for the videos !!!! I enjoy them all .

I use Naval Jelly on handtools like this with heavy surface rust,the stuff is amazing and relatively quick and easy,will knock down this process by an hour or two,great video keep em coming
Hello Dustin! Naval Jelly has been around for decades! I used a ton of it when I was restoring a 1951 PONTIAC, it not only gets rid of rust but converts it to a substance that protects the metal... I sound like a commercial! lol Great tip! Thanks very much!!!!!

Never owned any Klein pliers, but I understand they are quality tools. I’ve been slowly replacing my plier arsenal with Knipex.
I like it! Those loosened up nice! Acetone and Trans fluid! Brilliant! I think I told you before, I use the Walmart brake cleaner to wipe my rubber handles on my tools. Even the tools I dipped in Plasti Dip. I spray on a rag (red) then wipe them off. I use it on my extension cords and anything rubber. My Dremel gets filthy and I use it for that as well. But be cautious! It will take the lettering off of a cordless drill torque settings. One video you used the washer as a bench, thank you my friend. I pile up so much crap on ours and use it all the time!!!!

Collecting is great but using them is better.
I went down a TH-cam rabbit hole and ended up on your channel and find it relaxing to watch. As far as the plastic handles go, you might try soaking them in hot water for a few minutes and you should be able to get them off. Clean them up and use hot water to make them pliable again and put them back on. It would be worth a try.
Hello Txsbill! You're right! The problem is once they are removed they tend to slip around on the handle, glue can help the slip... I am planning a video on handle replacements for pliers, Klein makes replaceable handles called Klein Koats and they are supposed to be very good! Thanks very much!!!!!

Wow! Most of your tools look alright to begin with, but those really needed a restoration! Klien too, sweet. Good tip on the electrical tape on the handles, I'd wondered how to go about that in the past.

The best part of restoring tools is when you go to the flea market like I did and pick up these pliers go to the seller and say "How much?" and he looks almost ashamed to ask $2- Now I could have said "Will you take a dollar?" and I'm sure he would have agreed but I never bicker over a dollar, and then you establish a good relationship with the seller in case you see something next week... People don't want or buy rusty tools! That's the absolute best part of this hobby! You can get beautiful tools on a budget! Just like buying older machinery, you can't buy anything comparable today! They made great stuff years ago!!! Thanks very much!!!!
King Electric sold Klien tools. I have had them since I was a teenager. Especially like the rubber handled screwdrivers.

For two dollars, a nice bit and a good buy
I'm from the south and guys around here don't look after their hand tools so well. You can find neglected one in the yard sale bins all the time in the summer. Make an offer on the whole bin usually gets grandma going. Watch out for the sheet metal snips and sheers cause most times they are worthless.

Sometimes the plastic handles will slide off the metal - in those situations, how do you secure the handles to the tool? Thanks for this video. I have a similar pair of Kleins that need cleaning up. Your tips will help a lot.
Usually if you slide off the handle, clean the pliers with alcohol and put a little glue around the inside of the handles and slide them back on they will hold well! You can use many types of glue, silicone, epoxy... many glues would work! Thanks!!!

thats how to do it! i use blunt scotch brite on the handles and actually same as you, lanolin hand protector as it helps the shine come back. i too make sure theres no rust coming out of the joint, ive sat there 30 minutes feeding wd40 to them till its clear. super to make sure you covered them handles, ive seen nice pliers ruined by wire brushing the end of the handles, and they want good money on ebay still....if only they had just left them alone. nice job on 4.2k!
Hello Jusb! I agree! The hand cleaner gets rid of the dirt quickly.. I've seen people using harsh chemicals like brake clean and it might work at first but then the chemicals break down the vinyl Handel composition over time and they eventually crack. I must say I've had wonderful results with my 50/50 mix of Mineral oil and Vaseline (petroleum jelly) it protects and is very safe! This very much!!! 😃👍

Hello Wes! That's the big difference between US and Asian steel, if these pliers were a inexpensive Chinese model the same rust would have pitted the steel and most likely ruined the joint... The better steel that Klein and Channellock use makes a word of difference in the long run! Thanks very much!!!

Klein is king for lineman pliers but for slip groove pliers stick with Channelocks brand kliens don't grip as well

Good outcome but a lot of work. I'd probably squirt a little WD-40 or liquid wrench on the joint to loosen them up... wipe it down... back in my bags- start using again LOL.

Have you ever used the Acetone/Transmission Fluid mix to free up the ratcheting mechanism for a socket wrench that can't be opened (because it is sealed)???

Best part about a find like that, since they are kleins they have a lifetime warranty, so for $2 you can get a $20 pair of pliers if you break those

I have a bunch of broken Klein tools (nutdrivers are very brittle steel) - where do I take them back to? I don't have receipts from 20 or 30 years ago.
Home Depot. Or Kleins website, you'll need the tool number if you go that route though. Take care!

Hello Vaughn! That is a great question! I wish I knew for sure! I use Bullseye shellac by Zinsser, as you know the cut is how thick the shellac is and years back I think it was a thicker cut from the factory, now it is a bit thinner but still excellent. The serious woodworkers make their own shellac from flakes but I have always had good luck with Bullseye! Now if I have some wood I am trying to condition I will occasionally thin out the Bullseye with denatured alcohol so I get more penetration but lately it seems thin enough out of the can! BTW- I buy it buy the quart can. Thanks very much!!! 😃👍

Yes if they're Klein. You go to you local Home Depot, set them on the counter and say, "These are broke, I'd like a new pair". Klein has a lifetime replacement warranty. *Note* If they see you've intentionally broken them they will give you a hard time or ask for a receipt, they will still give you a new pair.
Did you put the shellack on the handles as well or only the metal?
Great video! Do you still use the hand cleaner for tool handles that are made with that dense sponge-like material (high grip)??
Hello N N, I dont have any of those sponge grips on any of my tools! (They are too old! lol) However A subscriber sent me a great video on a guy who cleans his sponge type handles with dollar store OVEN CLEANER!!! Really! It worked for him great! I would try to keep the cleaning solution as safe as possible as not to destroy your handles! Thanks very much!!!!
Oh, you would have a link to that video, would you? I tried doing a search on both TH-cam and Google, but came up empty. Kinda surprised, as I thought Oven Cleaner was really caustic stuff. Don't know if I should spray it on and scrub off or let it soak for awhile.........

Hello David! I don't think they are too old because the name was etched on instead of engraved... Klein makes great stuff! Unfortunately they also make a lower grade of tools in order to compete.. Depending on what model you buy some jaws are hardened and specially treated to cut steel and bolts and there lesser grade is only rated for Copper! I'm not crazy about that policy! I just threw a pair of these away because the cutting edge was warn and they had alot of rust. So you think there is any way to restore the cutting edge.

You can use Shellac on any pliers or this is only for demonstration ?
i think the handle sometimes come off if you pull...then you can ge tthe rust inside and then put it back on

ever try evpo rust it does amazing job just dont use on blueing make sure fully submerge dont let it go for more then 8 hours (you can tho) and also when it fresh works the best but older stuff give a wired finish what works great too

The wire wheel and Dremel weren't necessary. Soaking the working end of the pliers in white vinegar overnight would have removed all the rust without hurting the metal at all. It also would have worked up into the joint and helped to clean it. This is an example of pickling that is routinely used to descale iron castings using a more concentrated acid.
Hello P Schmied, I have been using Vinegar for rust removal for three years now, I have a few videos on it... Including it's limitations.. Vinegar will besides removing rust blacken the metal to you have to wire brush it anyway... I use vinegar a lot for intricut castings and larger pieces but for a small pair of pliers the wire brush is fast and easy! Thanks!

Cut a piece of 16 gauge stranded wire, if the cut that and the thick wire both then they are good.
Hello David! I will try it!!!! That is a good tip because the stranded wire will not "snap" like wire hanger! Channellock uses a piece of Jute twine to check for sharpness! You know how hard that is to cut cleanly! Thanks very much!!!!

Hello therealknapster - Being this was a small project I skipped the vinegar because you have to wire- brush it anyway... A vinegar bath is great for large items or items that have a lot of small intricate areas, for hard steel and smooth areas you can skip the vinegar and go right to the brush! Thanks!

Pretty much. Cover the clean metal.

Hello Midwest Tool Review! Outstanding score on the HK Porter cutters! I did a video a couple years ago on a pair I picked up! They are so beautifully made and really ornate! A joint venture project sounds great! I just need a little time as I have a literally a trunk of tools waiting for restoration.! I don't know how I got so overloaded so fast! I have a pair of MountainAir Tool Company pliers, anyone know about this company? I live in New Mexico, and there is a small town named Mountainair, but I can find nothing on this company. My grandfather had these pliers on his ranch in the 1950 - 1970s. They are quite old.

Yes, and I found the exact patent for the wrench dated 1944; however, no info locally on the company. Some time I may take a drive there and show them the wrench. Anyway, it's interesting to see how you restore old tools. I love tools, and I've found a few cast offs, brought them back to life and still use them. I used many techniques as you, so I must have done something right. My uncle died two years ago, and the guy was a real saver. He had some old tools, but the cousins probably took them and sold them too cheap. I would taken those tools, kept them, and passed them down the family. Aahh family with drug and alcohol issues , what a wonderful thing.
Yeah! You should go down there and see if there's an old timer who was there since "the beginning" you know the guy, he's about 75 years old with ear hair that sticks out an inch... Has to hold the pliers next to his belly so his bifocals and focus... lol It would be cool to see there reaction! Thanks !!!!!
