Geoff is the bass for the acapella group, “Voiceplay”. If you want to hear the totality of his multi-octave range, check out “Oogie-Boogie Song” by Voiceplay. It’s from “The Nightmare before Christmas”. It’s out of season now, but you can hear the true stretch of Geoff’s vocal talent. He’s. Amazing.

Look, I am a baritone and I can get crisp and resonant down to a C#2 however of what I could hold over an orchestra would be a G#2 or a G2 on a good day. So judging by Geoffs tonal quality I would imagine him being able to sing an F#2 over an orchestra which would be classified as a lyric bass-baritone.

Lovely reaction vid! As others have mentioned, Geoff has a few other pretty amazing solo vids (Blackbird really is just phenomenal), and if you're into acapella, definitely check out the group he's in, Voiceplay. Besides being the bass singer, he's also one of the two principle arrangers for their songs. Geoff and Tim didn't understand that they had to reach into the bag to pick a range to sing in so they took the entire bag. VoicePlay's Geoff Castellucci and Home Free's Tim Foust both have insane ranges so you simply don't know if they will be singing as the bass for a song.

Welcome to the world of Geoff Castellucci. As others have pointed out, he's the bass singer for the acapella group VoicePlay, which is for my money, my favorite acapella group that I've found. Their theatricality is legitimately delightful, and quite frankly, there isn't a weak link within the group. Some might not feature as strongly in some songs as in others, but there was really no dead weight in the group. They did lose one of their original members about a year ago now, and they're currently in the phase of featuring a number of guest singers as, what seems like, a kind of extended audition process... seeing who works well with the group and who the fans react well to. They went through a similar process a few years back when another member had departed the group, and one of the guest singers that they worked with a number of times eventually was announced to be the new permanent member. On the whole, though, I would say that they take their performance very seriously as a group without taking _themselves_ too seriously... and I think that is a lot of what I appreciate about them. Pentatonix... just look like they're way too serious and intense these days, and it actually kind of kills me on them. VoicePlay... they're not afraid to still dress up in silly costumes, like for their Little Mermaid medley last year.

I've also recently heard that the need for a microphone may be the difference here, but obviously I have never heard what these men are capable of without one. Nor in a truly operatic or choral style, and would be very interested in your take on what qualities are necessary for a true profondo.

@@keoashford1924 I'd been meaning to get to that, I'm playing it now! I do wonder what Avi, Geoff, and Tim could do in classical or classical crossover, or opera. It feels very apples to oranges trying to compare the various styles. I hear definite similarities and differences, but I'm not sure how much of that is a product of genre. That is however a beautiful arrangement, incredible tonal quality, and resonance as well. Perhaps if enough people asked, they might give something like this a shot for comparison. It would certainly be an interesting exercise both musically and intellectually. Unfortunately my musical education was stunted by being assaulted in choir class in middle school, or I might have a better understanding of music theory. I just never went back.

Geoff is one of the three most popular A Capella bass singers right now from three of the most popular five person A Capella groups. Geoff from Voiceplay, Tim from Home Free, and Avi formerly from Pentatonix. They are all extremely talented with outrageous vocal ranges. Although each one has a different timbre, they are all just as talented and enjoyable to listen to. It's quite a rabbit hole to start down listening to these three groups.

You need to see some of voiceplay as well. the really great part for all 5 of the musicians in this group isn't JUST that they are completely, AWESOMELY talented...... They ALL work really hard at their craft and unlike some groups/artists, they seem to consider reaction videos as a complement not as some sort of attempt to cash in on them.
Also they are complete professionals in person. (also, also they are JUST as great live as they are with the post production sound in videos like this one.)
I saw their set at the Christmas Party in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World a few years ago and I promise you Geoff's range is just as clear and his diction is just a sharp in person as it is here and without any editing tricks. The same is true of the other members of the group as well.
Enjoy going down the rabbit hole of this great group. I hope to see more videos like this one from you

If you're liking bass singers, there are a few a capella groups that you might want to check out. Geoff Castellucci is with a group called Voice Play. Then Tim Foust is with Home Free. And Avi Kaplan is doing his own work now, but you can find him in older Pentatonix videos. They are all phenomenal with each of them having a totally different sound. I know that Tim and Geoff have 5+ octave ranges and I imagine Avi is pretty close if he doesn't actually have the 5+... All 3 groups are insanely talented.

I’m late finding this, hope you see it. I really enjoyed the way you focused on his tone. Many focus so much on just how low the notes can be, but it’s the quality of tone throughout all his range that impresses me. Gorgeous!
I do hope you consider looking into the group he is in - VoicePlay. I’m very impressed by each of them. Every one of them have great range along with wonderful tone. But they also can change their tones well to fit many genres and even characters.

Geoff can do tenor as well. He has a 5 octave range - goes from B0 to A5. He is part of VoicePlay, performs, arranges, staging, cameras, his wife Kathy is the production manager for his solos. He and Layne take turns doing the next upcoming video. Layne is VoicePlay's beatboxer. If you want to hear some of his range, try the Beatles Blackbird, or High and Dry. If you like Halloween, try the Monster Mash or the Headless Horseman.

I think in terms of actual instruments, there’s some mild percussion and something like a maraca. I think he did include a bass or a cello towards the beginning, just plucking those really low strings in time to the clapping. It’s very subtle, and mixes so well with his voice, I’m not 100% certain, but I could swear I hear a couple notes in that one section

He’s in another acapella group, Voice Play. They have so many good videos on youtube. Several of them dressing up as characters from the movies the soundtrack is from etc. (Oogie Boogie song, Moana Medley, the Little Mermaid Medley - and lots of others). Geoff Castelucci has a couple of videos on how he’s able to sing as low as he does.
