This Altinoglu/Frankfurt RSO performance is beautifully structured and played with real polish. Indeed, it is demonstrably superior to the only commercial recording that's available of the 1907 original version of Florent Schmitt's masterpiece. The success of this Altinoglu/Frankfurt rendition should come as no surprise, because Maestro Altinoglu has been a champion of Schmitt’s "Salomé" ballet for more than a decade. He has presented the revised (1910) version in concert with various orchestras in Europe and the United States (including at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2012), and he's also included the score in his classes for conducting students at the Paris Conservatoire. With such passionate advocacy for the music, it seems only natural that he would want to program the 1907 original version of the piece as well - and he's done so exceedingly well here. Congratulations to him, the musicians, and everyone else associated with this production.
That's what happens when most orchestras only know Berlioz, Debussy and Ravel in the scope of "French Music"... Have a try at Schmitt's Psalm 47 to wonder why that piece is not a pillar of choral repertoire yet... th-cam.com/video/G_tptLxqJwU/w-d-xo.html or his virtuosissime Dionysiaques.... th-cam.com/video/lNUSwA8MrYY/w-d-xo.html
Thank you very much for this magnificent and rare performance of the original version of this masterpiece: in my opinion, much more dramatic force in this long version for small orchestra than the better known symphonic suite. I salute the tribute you pay to this great composer.
👏👏👏👏👏Bravo!!!
The world premiere of this work in 1907 also featured a performance of Dukas "La Peri" (first performance for that one also). Because of the space involved the orchestra was stripped down to essentials. The suite (written a little later) uses a full orchestra - and it is just as electrifying as this version. This, however, is an outstanding performance indeed! Worth your time to listen and watch!
I did not know the piece. Very fine and moving. Tomorrow october 29 2022 I am going to a performance with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic under Stephane Deneve.
Deneve does the 1910 version of this piece (half the music, twice the musicians). Both versions are spectacular. I saw Deneve present it in Toronto in 2011, as well as Lionel Bringuier in Cleveland, JoAnn Falletta in Buffalo, Yannick Nezet-Seguin in Philadelphia and Fabien Gabel in Detroit. Without a doubt, La Tragedie de Salome is definitely "worth the trip" to see ...
Wahrlich ergreifend!
Wonderful performance! Interesting to hear it reduced to 1212-2220-tmp+2-hp-str. I couldn't find it on Durand's website. Is it arranged by Maestro Altinoglu?
This is quite a large, heavy dose of impressionism; I was impressed almost to the point of being flattened under the pressure. Patience and concentration helped, but it couldn't forestall the boredom that I inevitably had to succumb to. I'm not even sure that seeing a staged ballet to this music would hold my interest. Bravo to the FRSO for having the stamina to present it, and outlast it!
Well, this is what you signed up for with Schmitt. If you can't stand impressionism... you don't have to listen to it. I'd argue this music, especially the prelude, is very digestible yet lush. Impressionism is about approximating an image, evoking it through emotion and color, not about directly conveying the image. If you need romanticism, a ballet, or opera... stick to that.
Music is always a matter of personal experience and taste. There's hardy a composer or style, or period that doesn't have both passionate advocates, and detractors. In the final analysis, it's futile to argue over it. You either like it or you don't, and no big deal either way.

breathtakingly beautiful performance of a masterpiece !!!!!
Stravinsky cited this piece as an influence on The Rite of Spring.
What a beautiful and masteful performance of a musical jewel! Absolutely astonishing. And available for free! Thank you so much!!!
Never even heard of the composer. I'm sad that's the case. This is beautiful and emotional. Thanks for sharing this with the world 🌍

Thank you for performing this sumptuous work. My entry into Schmitt was his Piano Quintet which is so achingly sensual.

BRAVO 👏👏👏👏
참 좋습니다(very good)!
Fantastic
Excellent quality :0
❤❤❤❤❤
I wonder how this music could be played with just 20 musicians. Is the original score anywhere to be studied?
❤️👏👏👏👏👏👏
First rate.

No. It‘s the original ballet version for small orchestra from 1907.

I believe that the manuscript score is held at the Bibliotheque National in Paris, from which the performing edition was prepared.

The Strange Case of the Invisible Soprano.
A bit on the slow side, I'd say.
The conductor looks like Juan Diego Flórez
