This was my very favorite Mahler symphony - before I discovered that they are all my favorites! The Fourth has a charm all its own, however, more delicate, more naive, exemplifying the childlike faith that Christ said is needed to enter Heaven. As depicted here, at 46:22, the first sight of Heaven's splendor may not seem as overwhelming as in Bernstein's New York Philharmonic recording, but Orozco-Estrada throughout emphasizes the work's Classic rather than Romantic aspect, and it works well. The orchestra as always, was excellent, as was soprano Erdmann.
This is the first Mahler symphony I ever heard. I was sixteen and a high school friend who was a musician introduced it to me. I remember the soprano soloist was Jennie Tourel and I think the conductor was Fritz Reiner. I believe the 4th Symphony is the best symphony for a Mahler introduction, maybe the 1st could work.
I so agree with Mr.Woodall. The conductor superbly conveys all the aspects of 'The Heavenly Life' that Mahler gives focus to. The recording as sound is exceptional. There is a haunting beauty of the orchestral playing and direction that is impressive and memorable. I want to hear more from this elegant musical conductor. I understand he has been appointed the LSOs new Guest Conductor so perhaps I will. I will certainly listen to this recording again.

Agree with the replies here. I hear all sorts of human sounds or sounds that easily evoke feelings by synaesthesia: happy sighs, wistful sighs, laughs, catchy rhythms, wails, shrieks, stabs of fear, terrifying crescendi, roars of chaos, manic accelerandi, tentativenesd, reckless abandon.
A great performance by the symphony, but a lot of very questionable camera work. So many interesting things were missed while the cameras were focusing on trivial stuff. Take the glissandi in the low strings at the end of the 2nd movement, for example. Visually fun to watch, yet totally ignored in favor of watching the clarinets sustaining notes.

What a weird comment - Mahler is all emotion unlike what my grandson calls the 'diddly-dee' composers. And where does emotion come from? The brain, of course, the cerebrum and cerebellum, particularly the limbic system. Have you ever seen an emotive stone???
I couldn't disagree more ... Mahler evokes so much emotion so much if the time.

Is there a way we can know the names of musicians?

At 46:40 we see the soprano sneak onto the stage .The cameras should have not shown that
