The bass is completely necessary if you want to fool the listener into thinking you have a full string orchestra, and the three wind instruments selected are the most versatile ones available in the early 19th century (and that hasn't changed a whole lot).

For all the clarinet fans out there, Meyer is actually playing a C clarinet in the variation (4th) movement. Very rare. Usually the movement is played on the B flat clarinet, as are all C clarinet parts, and transposed up a whole step.

The C clarinet has a light colour and is very well suited to the higher register passages of the variation movement. I always choose to play that movement on a C.

Not all C clarinet parts are played on Bb clarinet. In more recent years, more people have been actually playing them on C clarinet, myself included.

That’s a tatty old ‘cello☺️ probably a Guarneri! Beautifully played. I love this octet. Sabine Meyer. It doesn’t get much better.

Have these musicians done any more productions together or was this just a one-off? So extremely lovely!
