The medication is called semaglutide. It is a medication initially intended to treat type 2 diabetes. However, in addition to regulating these patients' blood sugars, it was also found that they were losing weight.
Now people are taking this medication for weight loss even without having diabetes. It is an injection that you get weekly. It is intended for people with a BMI greater than 30 or a BMI greater than 27 if you have weight related issues like high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol. You start off at a low dose and work your way up to the max dose of 2.4mg. You then stay at this dose as a maintenance dose. You can see up to a 15% reduction in your weight if done in combination with appropriate diet and exercise.
However, this is a medication and therefore does not come without risks. Most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation, but there are many others and potentially more serious ones. It is important to have a discussion with your provider that you are safe to take the medication.
