Amazing tier list! Lovin the different perspectives on the different mangas and how calmly you deliver them 🤍 I personally really liked how dark and repulsive the human interactions were in No Longer Human (i also haven’t read the novel) so it’s on the higher list for mee but this review made me want to see it in a different light so I’ll be trying out the Usumaru Furuya collection 💯

A Junji Ito tier list is interesting because since he touches upon so many different types of fears, everyone is bound to have different opinions and which manga they would rank! I personally would rank Remina higher because the thought of the unknown from outer space being the cause of the world's demise does kind of freak me out. We're one tiny spec in an endless universe! And I agree I felt Sensor was real similar to it except the concept of pretty hair doesn't really do it for me so I would have ranked that at the bottom lol. Also, Black Paradox goes so hard, it's definitely the most underrated one. Loved how unique the characters were compared to his other works.
I totally understand the whole doom coming from the vast universe fear like I did like the concept just the way it kept going, the floating around without gravity like idk just felt like around the halfway point the planet should have just destroyed them the end…🤣☠️ It went past my suspension of disbelief barometer…but Black Paradox was SO GOOD definitely feel like it’s underrated, the characters do feel unique, and I’m so glad someone felt the same way about it!! 😆

Tombs short story collection 4. Smashed short story collection 5. Deserter short story collection These are the 5 Ito works I can call each and every experience on how I felt when I read these. Even though I've read Lovesickness and Frankenstein and a few stories unmentioned, I've always enjoyed what Ito brings out in his works; they're so enjoyable to examine and observe from an artistic perspective. I haven't read all of Ito's work but I've read a decent chunk of it and enjoyed most of it. 🙂❤📚

so i just got uzumaki yesterday and i am about half way through. I am obsessed with it! Its soooooo good! And i want to read all of his work. what do you think would be the next best junji ito manga to get?
Well, as suspected, I now have 17 new manga that I am absolutely itching to read!🤣 At least now I have some idea what order in which to read them! I'm definitely going to start off with Uzumaki! Even if everything Junji Ito I read after Uzumaki pales in comparison, if I don't start off with it, I'll just be wishing I was reading it and lessening my enjoyment of whatever else I might be trying to read instead!😂 I'll probably read Shiver after to get that more overall sense of his works in general before I dive back into his single themed stories, probably Tomie then Gyo, and then I'll start working my way through the rest of his short story compilations, probably starting with Tombs or Venus in The Blind Spot.
Sounds like you have a super solid plan 🤣 have to start with seeing if you like Uzumaki first! I hope you do, but Junji Ito is a bit of a different vibe and story so not everyone is a fan though it seems like we have pretty similar tastes in the manga we’ve enjoyed so it’s looking good 🤣👍
Same deal with me and the "No Longer Human" mangas. I read the earlier one before the Ito one came out and maybe I'm just biased, but I just think it's better in every possible way.
I also really liked Black Paradox, and like, I get why other people feel very lukewarm about it but the sheer absurdity of the story after such a tame, albeit very macabre initial setup, is just so enjoyable
I think you need to read no longer human original, in the meantime i will read the manga version so we can discuss making more sense with our ideas aboıt it :)
That really wasn't too bad of a rant, and completely justified imo! I tend to be too much of a purist(or pedantic, whatever you want to call it🤣) when it comes to adaptations, to the point where I feel more trepidation that a beloved story will get mutilated than excitement when I find out that one of my favorite books is getting a movie or TV adaptation!🤣 I'm much better than I used to be at accepting that certain things work better in different mediums, and some things don't work at all when moving from the page to the screen. I also know that sometimes a different direction with certain things needs to be taken to appeal to the target audience for whatever new medium the story is appearing in. I almost always prefer the original version, but I can accept superficial changes with minimal to no griping. However, what I find utterly unacceptable is when an adaptation ignores or warps the themes, message, and/or point of the original story! Frankenstein isn't a classic because it's a horror story about a monster made from corpses, but because the corpses aren't necessarily what makes the monster! It chastises the reader for making superficial judgments and forces the reader to question how a monster is made and who really is a monster! It shows the importance of family and love and acceptance, and how, when denied those things, how harmful and destructive and dangerous anyone can become! What's more evil, the dog who has been beaten and starved and trained to fight when it attacks someone, or the trainer who beat, starved, and threw it into the fighting pits? We put the dog down, but was it ever really its fault? By ignoring that part of the story, it shows at best a deep misunderstanding of the point of the story and, at worst, a complete disregard for the central theme and message! You can barely call it the same title! It completely changes the story, ignoring the whole meaning of the book! It guts it, leaving only a familiar looking carapace in its place. Like someone handing you an empty shell but insisting that they were giving you a turtle. Whew! I honestly got a little more second-hand anger sitting here thinking about it as I typed this comment than I was expecting.😅 It just sounds and feels like Junji Ito's adaptation completely misses the mark and comes across as disrespectful towards the original material from which it drew its inspiration, which almost certainly wasn't his intention, but is very understandably frustrating nonetheless!
Yeah, I mean I believe I cut a chunk out where I just go on about the monster’s backstory & experience that led to him asking Frankenstein to make a companion for him, but it’s been a while can’t remember what I kept in 🤣 Ugh gets me heated just thinking about it!! I hate speaking ill of Junji Ito but he didn’t seem to grasp or else care what the true horror and intrigue of the story Frankenstein, which is such a shame. I've read them all so far apart from Soichi and Mimi's terror which I'll probably read later in the year or early next. The ones I remember the most that I enjoyed because they are very hit and miss for me are Shiver, Tombs and Cat diary. I enjoyed the majority of lovesickness as well. I felt the same about No longer human as you did because I also read Furuyas version first.

Can't remember the first ones I started with apart from Tomie and Uzumaki since they left an impression. I read no longer human fairly recently like a month ago and read Furuyas version years back but I didn't feel much impact from Junji Ito's version where as I remember thinking Furuyas was very bleak.

I’ve never read Furuyas version but I have read Itos and the original. And junji itos very closely follows the original work, which is very dark and not so politically correct so maybe that’s why you didn’t like it
I think its kinda sad and disapointing how Viz removes the stories from Shiver on the other volume, ex Glyceride is from Smashed and they removed it from Smashed
You know, I read Smashed like a week ago when I came across the Soichi chapters my first impression was "Hmmm I feel like I'm reading his final chapters" and I almost skipped it because I figured they would be put in the Soichi collection, and surprisingly no!
Right?! It feels like it should have been in the Souchi Collection…and it seemed like a better couple final stories to end with I don’t know why they weren’t included…Just strange 🤷🏻♀️🤣

Id easily have ranked it S tier bc of that alone, but the whole relationship with the main protagonist and his girl bugged me enough not to rank it higher. 😅 Aww thanks I love it I’m glad I splurged on yet another mug just for this video, and that’s funny I mean his art is pretty grotesque don’t really wanna see it when you’re preparing food probably hahaha 🤣
his best works to me: Uzumaki, Gyo, Tomie, Shiver, Remina, Lovesickness, No Longer Human. I don't rank them if they are the most creepy but best in terms of story, characters and overall mood.
Maybe I'm weird but I'm halfway through Uzumaki and I'm finding it funny instead of scary/creepy. That's not bad but the absurdity makes it more similar to black comedy rather than anything else 😅 So far my ranking would be S-tier: Cat Diary (I'm a cat parent so I'm biased, really loved the random creepy pannels contrasted with the cuteness), A-tier: Uzumaki and C-tier Tomie (too repetetive with not enough payoff).

I know its not an original story of his, but his adaptation of No Longer Human was peak, its such a messed up story, but he 100% did it justice
