- These are my (current) 20 favourite films released in the 1950's.
This is not a list of the BEST films of the decade. If a film is not included, it is because I haven't seen it or it is not one of my absolute favourites.

Really interesting list. Again there's some I haven't seen. I think the 50s might be favourite decade for film honestly. So many amazing films. Great to see some Mizoguchi. That brings me to my favourite film of the 50s which is The Life Of Oharu. My second favourite is La Strada. Number three is Singin In The Rain.

Great list, George. Nice to see some crossovers with my list and a lot that would be on my 21 to 30 list. Solitary Ronin, in the 1950's list on his channel, included Attack, Ace In The Hole and Sweet Smell Of Success. Thanks for watching.
@@steve4films Attack is definitely an underrated film. I forgot to include a few films like Winchester '73, Roman Holiday and Rio Bravo.
Only gonna go for American films here. Worldwide is too big a topic Very tough whittling my favorites down to just 20. I've got a few over 20.

Having not seen the two italian films, Ilya Muromets and Cairo Station, I basically agree with your choices. There is a film that I find always missing: "There is not greater love"(1959), the first part of Kobayashi´s "The Human Condition". Perhaps , being part of a trilogy released between two decades make it more difficult to appear in both of them.
Human Condition is one of the greatest (and bleakest) films of the 50’s but not a personal favourite. Give me silly Italian drama every time 😀 Thanks for commenting. 🙏

Excellent video sir. I am waiting is a stunner as is the samurai trilogy. So many Italian films to catch up with.

Another excellent list of films. The ones I've seen are" The Big Heat, The Killing (Fantastic!!), The Wages of Fear (This one blew me away.), Les Diabloique and North by Northwest. I still haven't seen any Samurai movies. Not sure I'm the Samurai type!

Excellent top 10 Steve. I have not seen the Sophia Loren films but l share your love of Japanese cinema and have all these on DVD.Pather Panchali is my favourite Satyajit Ray film though it is years since l saw The Music Room which was shown on BBC TV a good 20 years ago. His Two Daughters is worth seeking out if you have not seen it.

I always enjoy your choices, and am usually surprised at how many of these I've seen, but I'm particularly interested in those I've yet to check out. ILYA MUROMETS certainly looked intriguing. I have to say that almost any Sophia Loren film from the 50's, Italian or American produced, is a must for me! I would have added at least one Marilyn Monroe film, probably GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES or THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH, because it's just anathema to not include her work in my favorites of that decade. Thanks for watching. I did have a few Marilyn Monroe films on my long list (Some Like It Hot, Asphalt Jungle, Bus Stop). Ilya Muromets is fantastical and hugely watchable. It apparently used the most extras in any film ever! It you enjoy big scale fairy-tale I think you'll enjoy it.
The best of Kurosawa missing-:Rashomon.
Also no David Lean - River Kwai or John Ford- The Quiet Man
Questionable list.
This upload should have been titled "50's Best International Films" because the films depicted here are from different parts of the world. There's no doubt that many of these films would have won awards for best picture, best director, best actor, etc. These awards would have emerged from Cannes and other places where film festivals were held. From what little knowledge that I have of stars and films, I choose the following: (1) Scandal in Sorrento with the very gorgeous Sophia Loren. One look at her and you will realize why she became such a craze around the world. Mama Mia, its Sophia again in "Too bad she's bad". What a face, what a body and what acting chops!!! To that I have to add "Too good that she's so good"! "And God created woman" with Brigitte Bardot created a riot around the world. Ms. Bardot was a little girl in a lusty woman's body and she could act too! The little man could really fight - that's Glenn Ford in "The Big Heat". Glenn never gave a disappointing performance. His other 50's blockbuster was 'Blackboard Jungle' where Bill Haley's hit number "Rock around the clock" was first sung over the credits. North by Northwest was a neat little thriller from Alfred Hitchcock starring Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. It was a popular film, but not as widely-liked as "Vertigo" with the ethereal Kim Novak.
