21 Favourite Films from the 1970's

- Inspired by the @timtalkstalkies channel community challenge, here are my (current) 21 Favourite Films from the 1970's. Films in my selection gained an extra point if they were set in the 70's, or evoked a feeling of the 70's.
Harvey Keitel stars in 3 of these films and was removed from a fourth.
Harrison Ford, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicolson and Anatoly Solonitsyn are each in two of these films.
The films also feature singers Mick Jagger and Toni Basil and comedian Richard Pryor.
Most featured Directors are Andrei Tarkovsky and Martin Scorsese (2 films each). Neither surpassed their 1970's output, but Tarkovsky has a better excuse.
The films are:
The Devils
James Bond: Diamonds Are Forever
Star Wars
Taxi Driver
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Get Carter
Going Places
Apocalypse Now
Chinatown
Straw Dogs
Aguirre, the Wrath of God
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie
Days and Nights in the Forest
Silent Running
Stalker
Mean Streets
Gina
Blue Collar
Five Easy Pieces
Solaris
Performance
The clips used here are for criticism and commentary within the bounds of fair use. This is a transformative effort with different expression (commentary and positive criticism) and different in character relative to the original works. The amount and substantiality of the portions used in relation to the work as a whole is a minimum necessary. These clips avoid story spoilers and inclusion here does not negatively affect the market value of any of these works. This video is not for profit. - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
The 70's and 80's was a golden time for movies, both big and little ones. Be cool if there was a movie channel that just played movies from the 60's through the 80's.
This is what a list should be. Real personality, real depth ... a clear understanding of the variety of cinema around the world and one that shows dedication, not just regurgitation of the usual popular suspects. Most of these demonstrate the human-scaled and humane dimension of cinema that today's corporate hacks have no clue about. Many of my own favorites are on this list as well. Nicely done.
Thanks so much for such a positive comment.
That most important thing : love by Zulawski is such an underrated movie no one talks about. This movie with Romy Schneider and Klaus Kinski is one the most beautiful and cinematic i've ever seen.
I’ve seen a few of his other films but I’d not even heard of this one. I’ve added it to my ‘to see’ list. Great recommendations. Thanks 🙏
Uno dei miei preferiti Romi struggente Kinsky epocale
it feels naked without the godfather or the conversation
Yes, those two are just outside my favourite 21, but would most probably be in my Top 30.
The godfather wasn't a good movie
It’s favourite. Not best.
3 days of the Condor was in my top ten.
I haven’t seen that one in years (probably 30 years!). I need to go back and watch it again. I remember thinking it was great. Thanks for the recommendation Andrew.
It's in my top five.
Serpico, dog day, deer hunter
Excellent list sir. I'm mulling over doing one myself not for the challenge, just for balance haha. Great to see Days and Nights in the forest and Aguirre, wrath of God on the list. Hopefully one day days and nights will get a decent release.
Thanks. That is high praise indeed, coming from you! My film watching experience is nowhere near yours. Choosing just a few films from one of the greatest decades is obviously completely arbitrary, but fun to compile a list of favourite titles. I'd love a restored version of Days & Nights In The Forest. Hopefully there is still a suitably good source out there somewhere.
Two Lane Blacktop, Deerhunter, Dog Day Afternoon, The Out of Towners
My favorite.....
"Breaking Away" 🚴 🚴 🚴 🚴
I forgot all about that one. Absolutely brilliant.
Great list I haven't seen all of them. Some interesting choices. Nice to see Diamonds Are Forever in your top 20. I also love the film. Its a lot of fun and unfairly criticized. its my first or second favourite Bond film.
The 70s had so many great films its hard to cut it down to 25. Here's my list- 1. Chinatown. 2. Deliverance. 3. Alien. 4. Taxi Driver. 5. Marathon Man. 6. Blazing Saddles. 7. Dirty Harry. 8. Slap Shot. 9. Jaws. 10. One Flew Over The Cukoos Nest. 11. The Godfather. 12. The Godfather II. 13. The French Connection. 14. High Plains Drifter. 15. American Graffiti. 16. Black Christmas. 17. Sleuth. 18. Night Moves. 19. The Outlaw Josey Wales. 20. All That Jazz. 21. Carrie. 22. Apocalypse Now. 23. Halloween. 24. The Conversation. 25. Young Frankenstein
All great films! What a decade! Thanks for watching and commenting. Chinatown is a film I never tire of watching.
of 25 i watch 20 n 2, 5, 7,23 are in my list of watching and i don't hear of black christmas
My favourite films of the 70s are. 1. A Clockwork Orange. 2. Saturday Night Fever. 3. Superman. 4. Cabaret. 5. Don't Look Now.
The Conversation... 😢
I have others but The Devils in the opening and Performance in the end are choices that I share so much.
Great list. I didn't know two of the non-English speaking films but most of the others would make my 70s top 50. My only criticism is that all your choices are very... um... 'worthy'. A lot of the fun of "favourite" or "best" lists is down to the guilty pleasure factor. In other words, films that most critics ignore or trash. My 70s top 20 would have to include 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory', 'Fiddler on the Roof', 'That'll Be the Day' 'The Warriors' & 'Shampoo'! Also, while 'Performance' is brilliant, I think that 'Walkabout' and especially 'The Man Who Fell to Earth' are even better Roeg films.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Worthy eh? 😀. I wonder if you think my other decade lists are the same.!?!
Willy Wonka, The Warriors and Walkabout would definitely be just outside this particular 21. I’m not such a fan of Man Who Fell To Earth but it would be in my Top 100.
Stalker!
And Solaris!
I was surprised that you didn’t include the Godfather or the Exorcist 😖😖
Hi Greg, The Godfather is undoubtedly one of the greatest films of all time. I’ve watched it so many times that it has probably slipped out of my favourites list. …too much of a good thing maybe. Thanks for watching.
Love your list. Mine would include: The Godfather: The Complete Saga 1901-1959, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, The Sting, Dirty Harry, Animal House, Busting, Sleuth, Across 110th Street, The Gambler, Superfly, The Last Detail, The Candidate, Electra Glide in Blue, The Last Waltz, Fiddler on the Roof, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, A Clockwork Orange, Young Frankenstein, The Bad News Bears, Save the Tiger and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Hi Larry. Some great films in there and many that I could have included. Superfly is an especially underrated gem. Your list also has a lot of crossovers with Solitary Ronin’s list on his channel. …well worth checking it out.
Good seeing 'Fiddler on the Roof' on a favourites list. I think it nails the eternal dilemma of tradition vs. change or conservation vs. progressivism. Also, Jewison's direction and Oswald Morris's cinematography are near flawless.
Good list with many unusual choices. I have seen all except for Gina which I had never heard of. You really surprised me with #1. I was fully expecting Godfather II.
Thanks Roger. Gina is a raw but ultimately very intelligent and human film. I heard about it via Chris Mohan’s channel. The Godfather films are almost certainly in my top 30 70’s films, plus The Conversation, etc.
Gina is the only I never heard of too. Some fine movies there. Although the only one I would consider a favourite is Star Wars.
I counted around 40 for me. But keeping to the 21 here .Note. Favourite and excellent don't necessarily mean the same thing to me.
The Goodbye Girl
Slap Shot
Harold and Maude
The Lord of the Rings (Bakshi)
Heaven Can Wait
Bugsy Malone
Breaking Away
Up in Smoke
Same Time, Next Year
Farewell, My Lovely
Melody
Silent Movie
Love and Death
The Four Musketeers
The In-Laws
The Boy Friend
The Owl and the Pussycat
Where's Poppa?
Joseph Andrews
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
Julia
There's seven in your list I've not seen and need to check out. Thanks for these recommendations. Plus, there's several that I considered and almost made my Top 21. Interesting that you put Four Musketeers ahead of Three Musketeers, but I agree; the second one is even better@@irish66
@@steve4films My 21 is just a selection. It would not be a top 21.
Just A few comments on your list.
The best movies for me there are the two Scorsese ones and Apocalypse,
Update. It would be the redux version of Apocalypse with the french plantation scene.
There are some others I need to see again,
I like Cassavetes in general but for me Bookie was his most disappointing.
I would say Gloria is his best one for me, followed by A Woman under the Influence, and Opening Night.
Some movies I thought were excellent, but are not favourites.
Cabaret.
Midnight Express.
All the Presidents Men.
Patton.
A great list of movies I'd want to revisit in 2024. Off the top of my head and consulting Wikipedia, hopefully these movies listed also find an audience, first time or rewatching. In no real order, Capricorn one(1978), Dirty Mary & Crazy Larry (73), Silver Streak (76), The Frisco kid (79), 1941(79), Deer Hunter (79?), Who'll stop the rain (78), North Dallas 40(79), Charlie Varrick (73), Rollerball (75), Slither (73), Parallax view (74), Killer Elite (75), Race with the devil (75), Night moves (75), Hunting party (71), The conversation (74), Young Frankenstein (74), The long goodbye (73), The Wild Geese (78), Animal house ( 78), Assault on Precinct 13(76), Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (73?), The Enforcer (76), Sugarland Express(73), Convoy (78), The driver(78), Paper moon(73), Barry Lyndon (75), What's up Doc?(73?), Deliverance (71?), and Meatballs(79?). Thank you if you read through these and may want to watch some of them.
Thanks Glenn. That's a a really interesting list. There's a lot in your list I haven't seen (or haven't watched in decades - Convoy, Rollerball). Parallax view, The Conversation and Deliverance all nearly made my list and would be in my top 30. I'd not heard of Killer Elite or Dirty Mary & Crazy Larry. I'll need to watch DM&CL it to continue my Susan George retrospective 👍
@@steve4films Thank you for the reply. There's something special about movies made in the seventies. Another few to add to the list, Electra glide in Blue (73), Soldier Blue (70) , Darker than amber (70) and Outlaw Josie Wales (76), which could still be Clint Eastwood's best Western. And Play Misty for me (71?), he's directorial debut. Have a good week and hope you enjoy the one's you haven't seen.
@@glennbotes8937 @steve4films If either of you guys are in L.A., The New Beverly Theater is showing Dirty Mary & Crazy Larry on the big screen during June schedule. June 14-16

@@johnp.olivas8330 Thanks John. Yes, I heard this on the Pure Cinema Podcast. Unfortunately I'm a little too far from the New Bev. I can dream though! 😁
I love Silent Running! Saw it in the theater. It blew my mind. Pretty realistic, really.
Great to hear. It is one of my top 10 favourite films of all time. It was made before Saturn’s rings were well understood but apart from that, I agree it feels realistic and itdefined my professional career. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I also saw it in the theater soon after it was released. The opening sequence of that film has stayed lodged in my memory--very powerful and thought provoking.
My 21 Favourite 1970s Films :
Dirty Harry (1971) Star Wars (1977)
The Godfather (1972) The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
Theatre of Blood (1973) Sorcerer (1977)
Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) Halloween (1978)
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) The Driver (1978)
The Parallax View (1974) Hooper (1978)
Jaws (1975) Apocalypse Now (1979)
Hard Times (1975) Mad Max (1979)
Rocky (1976) Alien (1979)
Taxi Driver (1976) Moonraker (1979)
Smokey and the Bandit (1977)
A quality list. Thanks Davy. So many films to choose from in that decade. There’s a lot on your list that are on my long list, and nice to see some crossovers. What a decade!
@@steve4films You're welcome. Yes, what a decade indeed, for many excellent and memorable Films !
Another that was a game changer was Halloween. A “B” movie but changed the industry.
EXCELLENT CHOICES! Apart from 2 OR 3 you must have chosen for reasons that only had to do with things like directing, screenplays, scripts or ones that I simply had no interest in. My favs were all there:
Aguirre, Chinese Bookie,Chinatown, 5 Easy,Taxi Driver. Gert Carter and last but def not least, Performance! but I was amazed that you missed Badlands, The Man who fell and Dont Look Now
The thing that often upsets me is watching the really bad aging of some of my early 20’s heart throbs, most notably here were Nicholson and Depardieu wheras Harvey and Dustin are looking pretty fit.
Cheers!
Marjorie
💚
ps: I subscribe to very little!
Thanks Marjorie. I really appreciate you watching and commenting. Every list will include a few random favourites that I love for obscure or nostalgic reasons. I could have included more Roeg but I like to spread the love. Badlands was an absolute favourite but I’ve probably watched it too many times (too much of a good thing). Let me know if there’s any others I’ve missed. Thanks again.
We actually saw Holy Grail and Slapshot together. At a drive in. Drinking and laffin!
Nice list - have you seen Killer of Sheep?
Hi. I wasn’t aware of Killer Of Sheep but will add it to my ‘watch list’. Thanks.
@@steve4films I saw your choices and figured this was something you might like - it's one of my favorites, tho
No Jaws, One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, Dog Day Afternoon, Dirty Harry, The Deer Hunter..come on!
All great films. I’d say Jaws is one of the greatest of all time but they are not my absolute favourites, although Cuckoos Nest and Dog Day almost made it into my top 21.
Where's last tango in paris?
LTiP is not one of my favourites (but I’ve not seen it in 30 years, so…). That said, Brando did make my list of Favourite Fifties Filmstars and he appears in my Favourite Villains video (although not as a villain). Thanks for watching and commenting.
Some good ones Stevie.
Thanks Bob. I could happily watch any of these at the drop of a hat. Looking forward to your list 😀
I remember silent running on tv back in the early 80's. One of my all time favourites when griwing up and remember crying(i was about 10) near the end-if my memory is correct-and probably wrong- it was when 1 of the robots 'died'. Good list 👍
Huwey and Dewey!! 😳 I feel like blubbing right now :)
Impressed you listed "The Devils". Ken Russell was one of my favorite film makers of that era. I would not have included Star Wars though. Seven Beauties, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, and MASH might have found a spot.
I haven’t seen The Seven Beauties. I’ll need to that one out and some of Lina Wertmüller’s other films. Thanks for the recommendation and for watching.
@@steve4films Great movie. Not that it matters a lot but it won the Best Foreign Movie Oscar that year. If you like SB, then I'd say her next best was "Love and Anarchy".
@@deirdre108 Thanks
Thanks for reminding me how much I hated growing up in the 1970's. Disco music, bad movies, gas rationing, and Jimmy Carter.
Can't speak for the US but despite black outs & strikes in the UK it was a great time.
Making a choice is always excluding. I miss "The Spirit of the Beehive", "Le Fantôme de la Liberté"(but being Spanish, I am perhaps biased), "Dersu Uzala", "Lacombe Lucien"and "The Stratagem of the Spider"(which I find much better than "Last Tango in Paris"). But I appreciate a lot your interest on showing that out of Hollywood, there are many interesting films to discover.
It was great to see Blier's LES VALSEUSES (GOING PLACES) on your list and I guess I'll have to seek out GINA, an unknown for me. I might have left THE GODFATHER off my list but not GODFATHER II. My favorites not included are DELIVERANCE, CABARET and NASHVILLE - oh, and I'd replace any of your science fiction choices with A CLOCKWORK ORANGE.
The Godfather films and Deliverance almost made this list. They are definitely amongst my favourites bust just outside my personal top 25, perhaps because I have seen them so many times over the years.
Very interesting list .I think the 70s were almost the best decade for "serious" mainstream films .I know it is a personal view but I think the paranoia films of the 70s like All the presidents men,Klute, the Parallax view and the Converstaion etc would be on my list .Also the friends of Eddie Coyle ,French connection etc and other downbeat films . Films like the Last Picture Show Nashville ,Mcabe and Mrs Miller,Network etc .
|Anyway you got me thinking about my own list ,so thats good!
All great films! The only two I’ve not seen are Eddie Coyle and Nashville. It was really hard to leave Parallax View off my list. I think Solitary Ronin put it at no.1 on his 70’s list. Do check out his channel. Look forward to seeing your list at some point. Thanks again.
Il conformista.... L'importante è amare.. Due gioielli con attori straordinari ... Nel primo Trintignant Dominique Sanda ecc ... Nel secondo Romy e Kinsky stratosferici ...
“Harry In Your Pocket” was my favorite.
It’s not a film I’d heard of but I really like James Coburn so I will check it out. Thanks for the recommendation and for watching the vid.
@@steve4films also we can’t forget the movie. “Thunderbolt And Lightfoot”. Now that’s a film that I can watch over and over again.
I don't know many of the movies of your list. I will try to find & see them... These movies could take place in my personnal list (in alphabetical order) :
All the President's Men (1976)
Charley Varrick (1973)
I... comme Icare (1979)
Klute (1971)
Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)
Les mariés de l'an deux (1971)

The Wilby Conspiracy (1975)
Three Days of the Condor (1975)
Two Lane Blacktop (1971)
Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970)
Gina is awesome. The CIP Blu-ray is one of my favourite releases of last year.
Completely agree 👍
@@steve4films As a Quebecer, I was surprised to find it here! Yes, that's a very good movie! Denys Arcand is such a talented film maker. And Celine Lomez is so beautiful,,, 😍
@@pierre-olivierturmel1705 Gina is a really tough watch for the first 80% but the last 20% brings it all together. I've only seen a couple or Arcand's films and hope to see more. Thanks for watching my compilation.
Also: Network, Superfly, All The President's Men, Blazing Saddles
Superfly features in my Worst* Favourite Films of all time video. I love it, especially the sounds. Network features in a very small way in my Favourite Films of the 1990’s video. Thanks again.
Nobody can say you don’t have a ensemble of humor
dirty mary crazy larry, two lane blacktop, le casse, la nuit americaine
70s were the best decade for music, and American movies (60s for foreign movies). Check out the movies: Harry and Tonto, Nashville, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Network, A Woman Under The Influence
Thanks for watching and for commenting. Cuckoos Nest is definitely close to my top 25. I’ve still not yet seen Woman Under The Influence. I definitely need to get to that one. Thanks 🙏

@@steve4films It's on TH-cam. Thanks for replying. I love talking movies, especially 60/70s.
Anyone that has straw dogs on there fave lists has to be insane!!!
Seen a lot of then, what about Bring me the 'Head of Alfedo Garcia' 'Enter the Dragon' and some of Pam Grier's classics like 'Foxy Brown'
Any of these fims listed are a thousand times better than the krap hollywood churns out now.
All good films that would be in my personal top 100. Love Warren Oates and Pam Grier. Enter the Dragon was actually included at 24 before I shortened the video. Thanks Anthony, for watching and commenting.
Quelle liste ! ...et Gina...
the winners: martin scorsese and andrei tarkovesky and the goodfather part 1 and part 2 not on the list.
Where the hell was the first summer blockbuster jaws
It's a great film but not one of my absolute favourites.
#1 Taboo
21? remember Gilda Texter?
I don't think I've seen 20 movies in my entire life. I have better things to do.
I liked the film pappilion
I like that one too. Anything with Steve McQueen is always good. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Bud Spencer and Terence Hill starrers...
Stalker and solarys 😴😴😴😴
One Threw Over the Cuckoos Nest
Taxi Driver
The Godfather
Apocalypse Now

All The President's Men
Being There
Sleuth
A Clockwork Orange
The Last Detail

And so many movies I'm leaving out. What a great era.
Or you know flew over the cuckoos nest. He wasn't thrown
Superb list. I’ve still not seen The Last Detail, or The King Of Marvin Gardens. Two that I need to get to. Thanks for the reminder.
@@steve4films Last detail is heart wrenching. Nicholson was on fire in the 70's.
Really? What a bunch of bollocks!

Yes! Performance 1970
At last someone who agrees on the masterpiece that is Performance, best British film ever made IMO @Steve4Films
