- These are my current favourite film-stars from the 50's.
The film summaries relates only to the films that star made in the 50's.
I've probably forgotten loads that I really should have included.
Also, these are not necessarily the greatest 50's film stars, ....just favourites of mine, although I'm keen to hear other people's favourites.
The clips used here are for criticism and commentary within the bounds of fair use. This is a transformative effort with different expression (commentary and positive criticism) and different in character relative to the original works. The amount and substantiality of the portions used in relation to the work as a whole is a minimum necessary. These clips avoid story spoilers and inclusion here does not negatively affect the market value of any of these works. This video is not for profit. - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
I guessed your number one as things moved along. It's a really good list. I'd have to include Robert Ryan, who just blew me away during the 1950's, and Jean Simmons, a real beauty who proved she could tackle most anything superbly in the 50's, and that goes for Deborah Kerr too!
Yes, good choices. All three of those were on my long list and narrowly missed being included. Thanks for watching. S
A great list and video. Timothy Carey is a good mention, not someone who would immediately spring to mind to me but he was great in Paths of Glory
Thanks Neil. One of my favourite films is Killing Of A Chinese Bookie, so Timothy Carey is never too far from my mind. He was so memorable in Paths of Glory. Thanks for watching and commenting. All the best, Steve.
I love this list for putting together James Mason and Mariko Okada... Dream cast.
It was a nice coincidence that I had included 20,000 leagues and you mentioned it as one of your Sunday afternoon films.
I love the number one haha. Great idea for a series that works so well for your style of video. Excellent and congrats on the success of your decades videos. May it continue sir.
Thanks Ronin. I really appreciate that. It means a lot. I'd love to hear your 50's favourites.
YEAH ! MARVELOUS LIST/INCREDIBLE ACTORS/WONDERFUL MOVIES !!!! WHAT CAN I SAY ?! THIS IS IT !!! A big hug from BRAZIL big (SOUTH AMERICA) Bye .
The good old times...
Lovely montage again Stevie baby. Definitely spoilt for choice in the number of fine character actors you could choose from. 5.09 a.m stuffing my face with stodgy fake Weetabix probably not the best time for deliberation but some quality names.
Cheers Bob. Let me know some ideas.
After Loren I expected Marcello Mastroianni.
Yes, they are almost inseparable in 50’s cinema! Thanks for watching.
That's a wonderful list. I gotta check some of those folks out. How'bout Setsuko Hara? She's magic in the films I've seen.
Thanks Henry. You’re the second person to mention Hara in the comments. I recently watched Sound Of The Mountain but I need to watch more of her film. Thanks 🙏
Reminds me of the time I was out having a quiet drink with Cary Grant and he told me this little tale: He got a telegram that said 'How old Cary Grant?' so he sent this in reply: 'Old Cary Grant fine, how you?' But then Sophia Loren barged her way in and spoilt the moment....
Typical Loren! 😂
Interesting list.Nice to see the Japanese so well represented although my own two favourites are Setsuko Hara and especially Hideko Takamine. Have you seen her in Twenty-Four Eyes? She is wonderful in one of the most beloved Japanese classics.
Hi John, I have Twenty-Four Eyes sitting on my shelf for years and have never got round to it but I will now. Thanks for the nudge. I recently watched Sound Of The Mountain and I’m planning to see A Woman Ascends The Stairs. These could all change my shortlist! Thanks for the recommendations.
@@steve4films Thanks for the acknowledgement, Steve. Sound Of The Mountain is not included in my Mikio Naruse box set and does not seem to be available here in England, not even on TH-cam which has a lot of his films available. That is one of the Setsuko Hara films I have still to track down but I can recommend any that she made with Ozu, especially Late Spring and Tokyo Story. A Woman Ascends The Stairs is another standout performance from Takamine. Happy viewing and please keep the content coming.
No favs....all transient transisters !
Kinda low on Americans.
A quarter of all my favourites are Americans. I’d say that was kinda high given all the great cinema around the globe in the 50’s.
Your choice seems to be international. Some actors I've not even heard of. From your list, my faves are Sophia Loren, Marlon Brando, Anthony Quinn, Brigitte Bardot, Cary Grant and Simone Signoret. Sorry, but I just couldn't stand the sight of Gloria Grahame. There was something about her personality that was so cheap and disgusting. I enjoy people with class, not gutter-snipes!
Oof! That’s harsh on Ms Grahame. But I understand; we have to try to separate the art from the artist but sometimes it is difficult. Thanks for watching past number 15 and for commenting.
