My 15 Favourite Films from the 1940's
These are my 15 favourite films released in the 1940's (based upon the films I've seen so far).
Thanks to @aszeke5634 for his help with this one.
Thanks to @leocoh89 for his inspiration and shout-out.
This is not a list of the BEST films of the decade. If a film is not included, it is because I haven't seen it or it is not one of my absolute favourites.
I hope we share some favourites or this inspires discovery of a new favourite.
The clips used here are for criticism and commentary within the bounds of fair use. This is a transformative effort with different expression (commentary and positive criticism) and different in character relative to the original works. The amount and substantiality of the portions used in relation to the work as a whole is a minimum necessary. These clips avoid story spoilers and inclusion here does not negatively affect the market value of any of these works. This video is not for profit.

Thanks George. Loads there that I like. Did you have the list already to hand?
Some great choices and it's good to see three Powell & Pressburger entries. Some of my 40s favourites are His Girl Friday (1940), The Shop Around The Corner (1940), The Mark Of Zorro (1940), Sergeant York (1941), Sullivan's Travels (1941), Went The Day Well? (1942), Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), Casablanca (1942), The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp (1943), The Ox-Bow Incident (1943), Double Indemnity (1944), Dead Of Night (1945), The Big Sleep (1946), My Darling Clementine (1946), Great Expectations (1946), A Matter Of Life And Death (1946), It's A Wonderful Life (1946), The Best Years Of Our Lives (1946), Miracle On 34th Street (1947), Red River (1948), Bicycle Thieves (1948), Key Largo (1948), The Winslow Boy (1948), Kind Hearts And Coronets (1949), Passport To Pimlico (1949), White Heat (1949), Whisky Galore! (1949)
That man from Rio( L homme de Rio)
Barry Lyndon.
A very solid list! I might have added Marathon Man and Deliverance myself, but that’s a minor quibble.
@@piersnightingale Hi Piers. Thanks for watching and commenting. …both those films feature torture/abuse. Should we worry about you? 😀That said, Deliverance narrowly missed being on this list.
@@steve4films Yikes! Probably, yes. In all seriousness, though, there are some terrific picks here. 5 Easy Pieces is an absolute masterpiece, and not included nearly enough in these kinds of lists in my opinion.
dirty mary crazy larry, two lane blacktop, le casse, la nuit americaine
Seen a lot of then, what about Bring me the 'Head of Alfedo Garcia' 'Enter the Dragon' and some of Pam Grier's classics like 'Foxy Brown' Any of these fims listed are a thousand times better than the krap hollywood churns out now.
All good films that would be in my personal top 100. Love Warren Oates and Pam Grier. Enter the Dragon was actually included at 24 before I shortened the video. Thanks Anthony, for watching and commenting.
better title would be my favourite foreign films
@@HarmonicMolecues Some of these films were made in my home country 🤨. Favourites are favourites, regardless of where on our globe they were made.

Love My Girlfriend's Boyfriend - one of Rohmer's absolute best, and somewhat overlooked.
Thanks Mike. I don’t know how Rohmer does it but his films are always so engaging and entertaining. Have you seen Masumura’s “Seisaku’s Wife”? - it is possibly my favourite film of the year so far.
@@steve4films No, I'd love to! How did you get hold of it?
@@michaelbartlettfilm Unfortunately I have to say I watched an ‘unofficial’ DVD, but if I can find an official copy or if it gets re-released I will definitely buy it. Solitary Ronin also just reviewed another Masumura “wife” film and said it was one of his films of the year so far. Masumura is definitely up there with the best of the Japanese directors and I hope more of his films are made available. 👍
Lots of good choices that would be on my list too. There are many but a few 80s standouts for me are Excalibur (1981), Local Hero (1983), The Big Chill (1983), Jean De Florette/Manon Des Sources (1986), Innerspace (1987), Moonstruck (1987), The Lost Boys (1987), The Untouchables (1987), The Princess Bride (1987) and Midnight Run (1988).
Hi George. Nice additions to the list 👍 Local Hero, Princess Bride and Midnight Run in particular very nearly made my list. Haven’t watched JdF & MdS in eons- a revisit is due. 🙏
These are not my favorite films albeit I like some of them. I will check out the foreign movies that I have not seen, and I am glad that they are included. I have seen BREATHLESS, LILITH, BONNIE AND CLYDE , THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY, BLOWUP, and a few more. I have never heard of some of them
There is a beautiful 4k print of Letter Never Sent available for free on the Mosfilm TH-cam channel if you’ve not seen that one. I hope my list helps you to discover a new favourite. 🍿🎞️
Love, love, love Breathless ❤ Richard Gere was it after American Gigolo. Skip Officer & a Gentleman. Hated the shaved head
Great to hear more love for McBride’s Breathless. Godard’s original was superb but it doesn’t have Gere’s buttocks 😂 Thanks for watching.
@@steve4films You’re so right 😆👋
Interesting choice in films. Here's mine: 1. Cinema Paradiso 2. The Green Ray 3. After Hours 4. Indiana Jones films 5. Return of the Jedi 6. Dead Poets Society 7. Amadeus 8. A Time to Live Time to Die by Hou Hsiao Hsien 9. Das Boot 10. Platoon 11. On Golden Pond 12. Boyfriends and Girlfriends 13. Casualties of War 14. Witness 15. El Sur 16. Where is the Friend's House? 17. To Live and Die in LA 18. High Hopes 19. The Last Temptation of Christ 20. Ran 21. Kagemusha *22. The King of Comedy Also is Boyfriends & Girlfriends called My Girlfriend's Boyfriend elsewhere? We call it B&G.
Good list. Nice to see a few shared favourites and quite a few I’ve not seen. Indiana Jones and Ran got cut off my own list to keep it short. After Hours and Amadeus would not be far behind. I forgot High Hopes was made in the 80’s. I also still have a lot of Rohmer films to catch up on. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍
@@steve4films Do you have a letterboxd? I'd love to keep up with your watchthroughs and see what you think if that's the case :D Especially with Rohmer since he's one of my favorite filmmakers.
@@abrahamchen8627 I should get around to setting up a Letterboxd account. My other favourite Rohmer films so far are Claire’s Knee and Pauline a la Plage. Based on your recommendation, The Green Ray should probably be next 👍
@@steve4films A great inclusion would be the four seasons trilogy with Tale of Summer being the primary favorite of mine. It was also an extremely personal film to Rohmer. You can get all four as a criterion box set.
Some fine choices Stevie baby. Maybe this is the decade we'd differ most in our choices due to our age difference, however.
Are you saying my choices are immature?!? 😂
Fantastic list. I adore My Girlfriends Boyfriend. It might be my favourite Rohmer film. It made me cry. I love Pauline At The Beach too. King Of Comedy is a masterpiece. Paris, Texas is a wonderful film again I cried in the third act. I don't disagree that it's the best film of the 80s it would be on my list somewhere. Some very interesting choices not the typical films you normally see.
Thanks Gary. I really like Pauline At The Beach too. It would be in my 22 to 30. I appreciate your feedback.
Good to see 2046 in there I've always loved that film. My favourite films of the decade are in the mood for love. The Pianist and the Darjeeling limited.
Thanks for watching this one. It might not be a common opinion but I actually like 2046 even more than In the Mood For Love. Both are superb. The Pianist is one I’ve not yet seen.
My favourite films of the 70s are. 1. A Clockwork Orange. 2. Saturday Night Fever. 3. Superman. 4. Cabaret. 5. Don't Look Now.
Great list again. Great decade. My top 3 are. 1. A Fistful Of Dollars. 2. The Birds. 3. Late Autumn.
Thanks Gary. I’m not the biggest fan of Ozu but I am a fan of Setsuko Hara and Mariko Okada, so I will need to check out Late Autumn. 👍
@@steve4films Yeah I noticed you had no Ozu films in your lists. I'm a bit surprised. But I know his films aren't for everyone. I also love Setsuko Hara and Okada. Late Autumn is wonderful it's quite funny and not too heavy.
Really interesting list. Again there's some I haven't seen. I think the 50s might be favourite decade for film honestly. So many amazing films. Great to see some Mizoguchi. That brings me to my favourite film of the 50s which is The Life Of Oharu. My second favourite is La Strada. Number three is Singin In The Rain.
Having not seen the two italian films, Ilya Muromets and Cairo Station, I basically agree with your choices. There is a film that I find always missing: "There is not greater love"(1959), the first part of Kobayashi´s "The Human Condition". Perhaps , being part of a trilogy released between two decades make it more difficult to appear in both of them.
Human Condition is one of the greatest (and bleakest) films of the 50’s but not a personal favourite. Give me silly Italian drama every time 😀 Thanks for commenting. 🙏
Great list I haven't seen all of them. Some interesting choices. Nice to see Diamonds Are Forever in your top 20. I also love the film. Its a lot of fun and unfairly criticized. its my first or second favourite Bond film.
70s were the best decade for music, and American movies (60s for foreign movies). Check out the movies: Harry and Tonto, Nashville, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Network, A Woman Under The Influence
Thanks for watching and for commenting. Cuckoos Nest is definitely close to my top 25. I’ve still not yet seen Woman Under The Influence. I definitely need to get to that one. Thanks 🙏

@@steve4films It's on TH-cam. Thanks for replying. I love talking movies, especially 60/70s.
I'll toss in "Lord Love a Duck," which is rich in social satire aimed at dysfunctional families, the education system in the US, Christianity, and the youth culture of the time. Even the music score is a parody of itself. Never heard of it? I hadn't either until just recently.
I’ll definitely have to check that one out 👍
Excellent list Steve. Nice to see Wallace and Gromit in there. Twelve others I loved: The Prestige, A Prophet, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, There will be Blood, Caché, In Bruges. Yi Yi, The Aviator, Downfall, Master and Commander, Hot Fuzz, Donnie Darko.
the first time i see an arabic movie in a list like this i mean cairo station 1958 directed by youssef chahine from egypt
…a superb film. Thanks for watching and commenting.
the winners: martin scorsese and andrei tarkovesky and the goodfather part 1 and part 2 not on the list.
I’m glad that you describe them as “your favourites” rather than “the best”, as so many would.
Great list. I didn't know two of the non-English speaking films but most of the others would make my 70s top 50. My only criticism is that all your choices are very... um... 'worthy'. A lot of the fun of "favourite" or "best" lists is down to the guilty pleasure factor. In other words, films that most critics ignore or trash. My 70s top 20 would have to include 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory', 'Fiddler on the Roof', 'That'll Be the Day' 'The Warriors' & 'Shampoo'! Also, while 'Performance' is brilliant, I think that 'Walkabout' and especially 'The Man Who Fell to Earth' are even better Roeg films.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Worthy eh? 😀. I wonder if you think my other decade lists are the same.!?! Willy Wonka, The Warriors and Walkabout would definitely be just outside this particular 21. I’m not such a fan of Man Who Fell To Earth but it would be in my Top 100.
Two Lane Blacktop, Deerhunter, Dog Day Afternoon, The Out of Towners
Every film viewer's taste differs. No, I have never seen 'Scandal in Sorrento', but how I wish I did. Just look at Sophia Loren and how gorgeous she looked!!! The new version of 'The Three Musketeers' with Raquel Welch was not a patch on the 1948 version with the beauteous Lana Turner, Gene Kelly and June Allyson. I heard a lot about 'Logan's Run', but didn't get to see it. I thoroughly enjoyed "The Fearless Vampire killers" with the lovely, Sharon Tate. I love most vampire movies and enjoyed this one too, immensely. "Diamonds are forever" with gorgeous Jill St. John. Wasn't this a James Bond movie that I must have seen. My mind is hazy about it.
I haven’t watched to older Three Musketeers. I’ll need to search it out. To see Scandal In Sorrento I had to order it from Italy. It is trashy but light-hearted fun.
This is a list of films from around the world and quite a few I have never heard of. If they were critical successes and not commercial, chances are they would not have been screened in my part of the world. Yes, D'Jango was a hit here, but I was never high on Westerns. Lilith with Jean Seberg and Warren Beatty was a highly emotional movie dealing with the mentally unstable people and depression. It may have been critically acclaimed, but it wasn't a commercial success. Breathless too was a critical success but seen by few people. Bonnie & Clyde was both a critical and box-office success. It was a bonanza of a movie, loved by all. Point Blank with Angie Dickinson was widely watched and appreciated. The good, the bad and the ugly. Very popular, but here again you have to love the Western genre to enjoy this movie. I didn't!
Thanks for your comment. A lot of these movies are now in widely available on Blu-Ray. A few of them take a bit more hunting or ordering via import.
Damn, now I have to go back and rewatch the grifters. Always thought it was underrated.
Glad to reminded you of this one. 👍
Vincent Gallo is legent now. Love him❤
Reminds me of the time I was out having a quiet drink with Cary Grant and he told me this little tale: He got a telegram that said 'How old Cary Grant?' so he sent this in reply: 'Old Cary Grant fine, how you?' But then Sophia Loren barged her way in and spoilt the moment....
Typical Loren! 😂
The Conversation... 😢
That most important thing : love by Zulawski is such an underrated movie no one talks about. This movie with Romy Schneider and Klaus Kinski is one the most beautiful and cinematic i've ever seen.
I’ve seen a few of his other films but I’d not even heard of this one. I’ve added it to my ‘to see’ list. Great recommendations. Thanks 🙏
Uno dei miei preferiti Romi struggente Kinsky epocale
Making a choice is always excluding. I miss "The Spirit of the Beehive", "Le Fantôme de la Liberté"(but being Spanish, I am perhaps biased), "Dersu Uzala", "Lacombe Lucien"and "The Stratagem of the Spider"(which I find much better than "Last Tango in Paris"). But I appreciate a lot your interest on showing that out of Hollywood, there are many interesting films to discover.
Some inspired choices Stevie as always. Tricky to pin actors to a specific decade as we know.
Thanks chap. I tried to single out some actors that were doing some of their best work in the 90’s or were in the ascendancy, or that I simply associate with some of my favourite cinema-going experiences at that time.
"Closely watched trains" was a cult movie for mi generation,. Also "Loves of a blonde" and "The daysies". Unhappily, watching them nowadays (at least in Spain) is very difficult. "High and Low" ( in Spain "El infierno del odio"~Hell of Hate) has not the popularity that it deserves...because there are not samuraïs on it. I have been trying to watch "Charulata"for decades Someone can give a hint of where can I buy the DVD or at least watch the movie?
Hi Andrés, Charulata is widely available in the UK (Criterion, BFi, etc) if your player will play UK discs. I think it is well worth getting if you can. It is probably also available somewhere on TH-cam but maybe not with Spanish subtitles. Thanks for watching.
@@steve4films I am a subscriber of Filmin, a Spanish platform of films with a quite large offer of classics. A year ago I searched in their catalogue and could not find films from Ray (Satyajit , fom Nicholas they had several). Yesterday , I tried again and they have just one, which luckily is "Charulata", which i watched immediately. But thanks a lot for your information. The film is certainly splendid and fully deserves its place as one the greatest of the sixties.
Serpico, dog day, deer hunter
That's not a bad list, not at all, but my favorite 90's film star who completely disapeared after that period always will be... Bridget Fonda. Iron Maze (1991), Single White Female (1992), City Hall (1996), Jackie Brown (1997), Break Up (1998), A Simple Plan (1998)... Bridget Fonda always contributed a great performance to each and every movie she were in.
That’s a really good pick. Thanks.
Nice list - have you seen Killer of Sheep?
Hi. I wasn’t aware of Killer Of Sheep but will add it to my ‘watch list’. Thanks.
@@steve4films I saw your choices and figured this was something you might like - it's one of my favorites, tho
Probably a controversial opinion these days but 90s Kevin Spacey was Glengarry Glen Ross, Swimming with Sharks, The Usual Suspects, Seven, L.A. Confidential, A Bug's Life, American Beauty...
Yes, probably controversial 😀 but thanks for watching and commenting 🙏
I remember silent running on tv back in the early 80's. One of my all time favourites when griwing up and remember crying(i was about 10) near the end-if my memory is correct-and probably wrong- it was when 1 of the robots 'died'. Good list 👍
Huwey and Dewey!! 😳 I feel like blubbing right now :)
Your choice seems to be international. Some actors I've not even heard of. From your list, my faves are Sophia Loren, Marlon Brando, Anthony Quinn, Brigitte Bardot, Cary Grant and Simone Signoret. Sorry, but I just couldn't stand the sight of Gloria Grahame. There was something about her personality that was so cheap and disgusting. I enjoy people with class, not gutter-snipes!
Oof! That’s harsh on Ms Grahame. But I understand; we have to try to separate the art from the artist but sometimes it is difficult. Thanks for watching past number 15 and for commenting.
I was surprised that you didn’t include the Godfather or the Exorcist 😖😖
Hi Greg, The Godfather is undoubtedly one of the greatest films of all time. I’ve watched it so many times that it has probably slipped out of my favourites list. …too much of a good thing maybe. Thanks for watching.
I don’t agree with this List.
