    In part 1 of this series I walk you through one method of incorporating candies in your artwork. I discuss and demonstrate the difference between a true candy and the earlier candies released by Createx under the Auto-Air Colors badge. I walk you through how to mix candies and provide tips for even coverage when spraying candies.

    Great Vid, Thank You! So no need to spray bleed checker over wicked colors before you spray candies correct? Only if you are spraying wicked colors over the top of candy,? just making sure I thoroughly understand. Again, Thank You so very much for sharing knowledge with us!!!

    • @wickedartstudio
      @wickedartstudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the compliment! There is no reason to spray Bleed Checker prior to spraying candies over Wicked Colors. The basis for using a candy is to tint or darken a color or colors that have already been sprayed. There's no reason to worry about the candy bleeding into the underlying color for that purpose, you're purposely changing the color with the candy to begin with. Candy bleeding, or leaching, can happen when you spray color over the top of a candy. For example, let's say you've sprayed candy2o Blood Red over an existing Wicked Color in order to tint or darken that underlying color and you plan to come back over the top of the candy with a white to add some highlights. There's a pretty good chance your white will become a pink once you've sprayed it over the candy. What has happened when this occurs is the white paint is reactivating the dye in the candy which allows the color (red in this case) to leach into the white and turn it to a pink. If you spray a couple of light coats of Bleed Checker (straight out of the bottle - do not add reducer) over the Blood Red candy and allow it to dry prior to spraying the white, you are adding a dissimilar material barrier between the candy2o and the white which should prevent the candy from leaching into subsequent layers of paint. Does that make sense?

    Great video. I just had a paint job ruined because of massive bleed through using Emerald Green Candy2o. Possibly because I was trying to lay a flat block of opaque white over the candy, and the white had about 25% 4030 which I think re-activated the candy coat which also has 4030 in it? Which I had seen the vid a week ago lol ;)

    • @wickedartstudio
      @wickedartstudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry to hear that, but you are likely correct about 4030 being the issue. Applying a couple coats of bleed checker over the Candy2o next time should solve your issue. Unfortunately, sometimes that's just part of learning. If you only knew all the jobs I've botched over the years due to lack of knowledge or trying to cut corners on a tight deadline. All of those mistakes cost time and money, but we learn from it and move on. You are not alone in that arena my friend!

    Awesome informative video..
    But when you talk about the translucent pigment candy it made me think of the Createx illustration colour line!
    Doesnt illustration colours work somewhat in the same way as the pigment candy or/and can you use it as an "candy" for a somewhat similar effect!?
    Just an thought from an dagger stroke rookie in learning ;)

    • @wickedartstudio
      @wickedartstudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn't a big fan when Createx released their pigment-based candy colors under the Auto Air Colors brand because it was confusing for those that were new to using candies. Fortunately, their pigment-based candies are no longer available. The candies they offer under the candy2o brand are actually real candies. The Auto Air Colors brand no longer exists either.
      You are correct. Illustration Colors work exactly like a pigment-based candy would because they are both created with pigments. You can achieve an effect similar to using a candy with a translucent pigment-based color by using it as a wash. However, that's where the similarity ends. The problem with using pigment based transparent paint is pigment is not soluble. A light wash works to tint underlying work because it's applied lightly. The pigment doesn't have the opportunity to take over when color is applied very lightly with minimal coats. If you continue adding light washes with a pigment based transparent color, eventually the pigment will take over and you'll begin to lose the clarity of the artwork underneath. It will become hazy or foggy. Pigment, regardless of color, also has a cap. Transparent pigment-based paint will darken with subsequent coats, but it will eventually reach full saturation if enough coats are applied, meaning the color can only achieve a set value or saturation level based on the pigment used to manufacture the color.
      In contrast, a true candy color is not pigment based. It is dye based. Dye is soluble. So, you can apply as many coats of a dye-based candy as you like and retain the clarity of the artwork and/or metallic or pearl effects underneath. A dye-based candy will get darker with each subsequent coat as well. The difference is a dye-based candy doesn't have a cap. If enough coats are applied, you can reach a color that almost appears black. That will depend on the value of the color you are using to some degree. For example, a yellow candy will not get as dark as a red candy. You can see that effect without spraying the color too. If you look at a full bottle of a dye-based candy, the color in the bottle appears far darker than it does when you actually spray that particular color. Does that make sense?
      I appreciate the kind words! Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!

      Candy bleed is always a possibility when working with candies; however, I wouldn't be terribly concerned with putting a yellow candy directly over a green candy. Green is a much stronger color compared to yellow. All the yellow candy will do is tint the green to the yellow side, but it may take quite a few coats to see it depending on what you're trying to accomplish. Thank you for the kind words!

    Hello, sorry English is not my first language. I'm new to airbrush and using trident paints. I mix a trident color, transparent base and reducer, is that correct? You said one to one ratio for paint and transparent then 20% reducer. How do I incorporate pearls or glitter? I'm confused when it comes to mixing.

    • @wickedartstudio
      @wickedartstudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid I won't be much help... Not all paint is the same. I use Createx products. I've never used Trident. Although I've heard really good things about their paint, it's very hard to get in the US. My best advice is to find copies of their Technical Data Sheets (TDS) online for the products you are using. The TDS sheets will give the manufacturer recommended mix ratios, dry times, pot life, prep, air pressure setting, etc... That information will get you in the ballpark.

    great video. one question to the candy o2 mixing: createx says max 50% 4030. this would be a candy/ 4030 ratio of 2:1, right? what is the difference to your 1:1 ratio?

    • @wickedartstudio
      @wickedartstudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! The Createx recommendations can get confusing. It's not hard to find contradicting information from Createx concerning their own products. I assume the contradictions exist due to the fact they are continuously improving and/or adding new products with the goal of improving existing products. Sometimes the new product recommendations supersede the previous recommendations and they don't always remove the older information from their sites. The current technical data sheet does recommend adding a max of 30 to 50 percent 4030 by volume to the Candy2o for airbrush use. For a spray gun they recommend 1:1. Any aniline dye based candy, whether water-based or solvent based, is a concentrate. The 4030, in the case of Createx, is the "carrier" for the candy (4030 provides other benefits too, but that's another discussion). Mixing 50 percent (or 2:1) of the 4030 rather than 100 percent (or 1:1) with a Candy2o will give you a stronger paint mix, meaning there is more candy in the clear binder (4030). So, it will cover faster but it will also be more prone to bleeding into future top layers of artwork. Reducing the concentrate further with 4030 (1:1) gives you a weaker mix that is easier to spray larger areas with even coverage in my experience, and the weaker candy doesn't tend to bleed into additional layers quite as strongly without preventative steps. (some colors will still bleed). The weaker concentration also makes it difficult to go too dark too fast. As a comparison, solvent based candies are mixed with a solvent based intercoat clear as the "carrier" (4030 takes the place of the intercoat in the water-based world); however, the recommended mix ratios are vastly lower (generally 5 to 10 percent, or no more than 20 percent of the candy mixed into the intercoat clear). So, there is far more of the intercoat clear mixed into a solvent based candy compared to the water-based cadies. The reality is this... manufacturers will always have their recommendations for mixing/using their products. They do this for legal/liability reasons and to cut down on frivolous warranty claims. I have never met a custom painter/airbrush artist that doesn't routinely stretch and/or break the rules. I definitely take the time to learn the recommendations, but I'm constantly pushing the limits to find out what can actually be done and what cannot. The 1:1 ratio is what I prefer because it works great for my needs. The trick is to experiment with it and find what works best for you and your needs. Does that make sense?

    • @sub-arts128
      @sub-arts128 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wickedartstudio thanks for the detailed answer. i got a great issue with little candy lumps on the surface. it looked like little candy drops. i think, i mixed the false ratio and too much o2.
      i used to spray fire the lavallee style with self-mixed candy-solvents. now i wanna switch to waterbased. a big issue with waterbased colors is, that they do not cover at once on black like solvents. have you tried to "base" your flames with white or opaque illustration orange and then push back with candy?

    • @wickedartstudio
      @wickedartstudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what you described, it sounds like you might have experienced seeding which usually caused by over reducing Candy2o (seeding also happens more when using 4012 reducer in my experience), or your air pressure was too low/paint reduction ratio was too viscous and the candy failed to atomize. Obviously, those are complete guesses based on what little information I have. I have tried using white for the initial layers when painting fire, but I don't prefer that method. I prefer to use Illustration Scarlet, Orange and then white. It does take longer to build the layers with water-based paint. You can add a small amount of white to the red and/or orange to make the paint more opaque though.

The blue candies are prone to bleeding (and I mixed them relatively light with 1 part candy, 3 parts UVLS clear and 1 part 4011 reducer). I didn't use any 4040 on my test panel. Being a little more careful with your candy application will help alleviate significant bleeding in your brightest highlights.

    • @wickedartstudio
      @wickedartstudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A true candy color is dye based. There is no pigment in it. If you're mixing with a pigment based powder, you're not going to achieve a true transparent glaze.

      Hi Sam. I wound up aborting the test with this panel. It was painted on wood and wouldn't stay upright in the window originally. I took it outside and left it there when I couldn't find an easy solution to keep it propped up in the window. Unfortunately, I forgot about it a few times when rain came. I wound up bringing it back inside before it got completely ruined. So, I didn't get a solid test with this panel. I need to do something similar with a metal panel and try again, but I've yet to get around to doing that.
      Having said all of that, I did use candy2o Blood Red on the hood of my own vehicle when I painted it. To date, I haven't noticed any fading and it was painted almost eight years ago. Based on that, I don't think fading will be an issue with candy2o candies. I would still like to do a test panel with the other colors and different ratios to be sure though.

    • @wickedartstudio
      @wickedartstudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use Wicked paint on your fishing spoons without issue: however, I'm not sure if the UVLS line of Createx clears will hold up to the abuse of actually using your custom painted lures. I would recommend using an automotive style catalyzed urethane clear for the final topcoat for the ultimate in durability. The colors you choose to use are completely up to you as the artist, and there's no shortage of choices in the Createx Wicked line.

    • @wickedartstudio
      @wickedartstudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@trout_spankn_dominoeacosta6914 The Neo will struggle to spray metallic and pearl colors due to its needle size. It will likely clog a lot if you try. It can be done (I've sprayed both with my Eclipse which has the same needle size), but it is frustrating. I would assume you'll prefer those types of colors due to what your painting so, it might be beneficial to invest in another brush with a larger needle/nozzle set.
      A 2k automotive clear can be gloss, semi-gloss or matte depending on the additives. Be aware there are some health concerns that go along with spraying it. I would definitely recommend doing some research before you decide to use it. Isocyanates are nasty. Protect yourself and your family.

      There are a number of factors we can't necessarily control that will affect your paint. I make recommendations based on what works for me where I'm located. That doesn't mean my recommendations will work for everyone anywhere. Environmental factors aside, we're all a little bit different and have our own preferences too. At the end of the day, it takes some experimentation on the user end to find what works best.

      @wickedartstudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's hard to guess when I can't actually see what you're doing, or what you've sprayed. Are you applying light coats? If water-based paint is sprayed too heavily it will cause pigment migration. Send me some pics at wickedartstudio@gmail.com and I might be able to give you some better suggestions.

    can i do this on canvas...black n white lightly then createx candy over it

    • @wickedartstudio
      @wickedartstudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can, but using candy over a black and white rendering limits the vibrancy of the candy in the end. Candy colors are exceptionally good at intensifying colors... really making things pop when used correctly. If you compare the end result in this video to the end result in part 2, I think you'll see what I mean. The colors in part 2 are a lot brighter and more intense compared to part 1. If you plan to use a grisaille (which is just a fancy way of saying monochrome) under painting, you'd be better off using a wash of transparent colors in the end instead of candies. The results will essentially be the same. If you want to use candies, I'd suggest using pastel colors close to the same candy color you plan to spray over it for your under painting. I'm working on a part 3 for this video series that will cover this technique. I hope that helps you out!

    How do you decide to use candy, metallic, or pearls?

    • @wickedartstudio
      @wickedartstudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Essentially, I almost always prefer to use a metallic or pearlescent under candy. Remember a true dye based candy is 100 percent transparent. The candy will allow light to pass through it and reflect (or refract in the case of a pearlescent) off the base color underneath. You can use a candy over any color and it will intensify the color(s) underneath; however, you'll always get a more dramatic effect if you incorporate a metallic or a pearlescent under the candy in my opinion. I touch on this more in part two which can be found here th-cam.com/video/OKXLt6VqtZs/w-d-xo.html
      I still have a part 3 to this series in the works. In part 3 I get into a lot more detail about using metallic or pearlescent colors under the candy.

    I dont think you can teach talent. Too start off with a blank canvas and free hand an image like you did,?

    • @wickedartstudio
      @wickedartstudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Natural talent is natural talent; however, it's still a perishable skill that diminishes without practice. I've been an artist for my entire life, and I've continued to learn throughout. I didn't always have the confidence to start with a blank canvas. So, I would say yes, a person can learn to do what I do with or without natural talent. How successful they are is dependent on how much time and effort they are willing to put in.
