Thanks for pointing out how the signs are also in Uyghur and that they incorporate local culture into the aesthetics of the station. So much for all the Western propaganda nonsense of the Chinese government trying to erase them.

"Generside" is the word western media use. Don't think if a country is trying to eliminate the indigenous, they would use their local language and local culture into the aesthetic of the station. At least I don't see this in N. America or Australia.

It doesn't work. Last year around September the CIA-employed Arslan Hidayat (who directs the World Uyghur Congress from Washington, DC) claimed that using Uyghur in Chinese train stations was a sign of cultural genocide.

The concentration camps are found in USA, called "Indian reservations". Also in ww2 concentration camps for Japanese. Also the practice of segregating black folks from white folks into their own neighborhoods called red lining. And soon another concentrating camp for Chinese people in America when the ŰȘ starts a new proxy war against China. And don't forget Gaza that ŰŠ is funding the weapons

Two wars have exposed the hypocrisy of the West. In the Israel-Palestine conflict, a country that constantly claims to uphold human rights was the only one to vote against a ceasefire in the United Nations, turning a blind eye to the actions of the Israeli military while providing them with weapons, and simultaneously silencing dissent within its own borders. The same applies to the Russia-Ukraine war; despite the potential to end the conflict through diplomatic negotiations, hypocritical countries obstruct peace talks while profiting from the situation. How many countries now turn to these hypocritical nations for fuel? Meanwhile, Western countries, which have long positioned themselves as champions of human rights and international order, also choose to look the other way, yet they are extremely concerned about China's Xinjiang and continue to spread smear campaigns. It is truly shameful!

Recently, I used the KL MRT subway in Malaysia and had to purchase a token using cash at the ticket machine. Everyone had to queue because we could only insert money notes one by one, which made the process painfully slow. At times, the machine rejected the notes, and occasionally, they got stuck, further slowing everything down. Frustrated, I asked a staff member if it was possible to pay using an app, but the response was, "No, we only accept cash." Despite there being just about 15 people in line, the inefficiency of inserting money notes into the machine caused an unnecessarily long wait.

That is what I like about China, always respecting people or groups of people whether you are one or many, whether you are poor or rich. That goes as well for political people visiting China. The treatment is the same with high respect. The signs in three different languages is impressive. The style and decoration are very much following the culture of that minority's customs. I wish we had this type of politics here in USA. Some times the government in California tries its best but there is always some people displaying some discontent and calling for general elections to destroy that action.

It shows things quite the opposite and is quite sad to see that in China there're things that are quite upsetting... or is it not true... I am a bit confused to be honest, because I would not like to know that what China Observer sais is upsetting not only the dear people in China but people who don't know very much and when they see that paper I supose🙁 it can be a bit scary... so I don't know I hope is not true🙂. Thank you for sharing such remarcable things😀👏.

I think China also try to use its resources in the most cost-effective way. To keep a team of subway construction experts and workers, and ongoing R&D, they have lined up a good number of subways to be built for the next 10 to 20 years, plus maintenance programs, a life time job for some. Even subways export.
The more people use subway, the less the road traffic jams and pollutions. Same ideas with trains, High speed trains.. and use China standard or none.

A beautiful, modern subway that respects the people's unique heritage--and this is what a remote, smaller city gets. Meanwhile, in major cities from SF to Chicago to NY, we can't even go into our subways for fear of getting attacked or worse. And even if we do make it down there, we are greeted by rats, garbage, and waste.

It's not as if people would stay in the station the whole day! If these ads allow to build the metro system and keep the low fares for people living in Urumqi, a city of "only" 4 millions, I would be Ok with it!
Anyway, that's better than the "garbage & graffiti" stations in the West or no metro at all!
However, I think that instead of having the advertisements stick on the walls or columns, a few LED screens like in other major cities in China would have been better to preserve the aesthetic of the station. So I think that hopefully it's temporary and they will limit these ads later; the time to build the other metro lines...
