      Hello, great informative video. A question, I want to potentially take a show that I enjoy off of my television into my computer. After watching this video and if I purchase this, how exactly do I get the sound to get transferred as well is it basic plug-and-play or is it something that I have to do specifically within my television or within this device. Any information would be helpful for reference I’m using an Emerson TV and I would like to be plugging it into my Mac air I really do appreciate it again

    Using one right now. VCR composite into a RetroTink2X that I have for retro gaming (much better than cheap composite/Svideo to HDMI converters) , outputting HDMI into one of these cheap capture cards, and digitizing family VHS movies using OBS. I think the family is going to be very pleased with the output.

    I use this very same capture card to record all my gameplay videos. I used to use the Windows camera app until I found out it wouldn't let me record videos longer than 3 hours. I switched to OBS Studio, I use an Orei HDMI splitter and for retro consoles I just use a cheap AV to HDMI converter. Over a year ago I watched this review and it helped me to make the decision of buying this capture card as I was always interested in recording my gameplay. This was a great video and thanks for the help.

    At last a very real world test for this what is fast becoming a "Miracle Device", it would be interesting to see what existing capture card companies think about this product, and to see how they are going to react with perhaps new offerings to persuade us to loosen our wallets. What does excite me though, is that this device has now made it possible for those individuals who may not have had the funds to purchase a decent capture device, and no doubt over the next few months we are going to see an explosion of content be it good or bad.

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This little device is great, but we should keep in mind that at 1080p, it is a generation behind the resolution curve, and a generation behind on it's interface, USB 2.0. Also, it is pretty stripped down with no pass through and no ability to add anything to the HDMI signal. I imagine the big boys will be concentrating on 4K USB 3 devices with lots of bells and whistles.
      That being said, this little device is a game changer for anyone needing to work with 1080p or less. Converting TO HDMI has been affordable for awhile: VGA to HDMI, composite A/V to HDMI, component vid to HDMI, S-Video to HDMI, optical to HDMI, and more. Plus all the native HDMI devices like cable boxes, DVRs, Roku, Firestick, Chromecast, game consoles.
      But if you wanted to do more than just output the HDMI being converted, that has been a barrier. This device breaks that barrier. Thank you for your comment.

    I appreciate how completely you test various products. Question: will this device work to capture streams from services which embed coding that prevents capturing? Like Amazon Prime, or Hulu, which allow programs such as Camtasia to record audio but not video. I want to be able to use dual laptops to achieve the desired result. Am I thinking this through correctly? The signal flow will be 1) Stream to laptop A; 2) Device; 3) Connect to laptop B; 4) Capture software (i.e. Camtasia).

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't use Premiere Pro, as Adobe charges for a monthly license, but it is recognized by PowerDirector as a video source. Even if edit software does not recognize it, video can be captured using OBS or the Windows Camera app, then imported into the edit software.

      here are the settings I find work the best in OBS Studio with this stick from my observations
      Resolution/FPS Type: Custom
      Resolution: 1920x1080 or 1280x720 (either work smoothly but advise limiting to 720p for livestreaming as its the highest supported on Twitch at this time)
      FPS: "highest FPS" or 60 (no meaningful difference in viewport latency by dropping it lower)
      Video Format: MJPEG (using YUY2 results in severe frame rate issues)
      Colour Space: 601 (709 seems less smooth in preview)
      Colour Range: Default (no noticeable performance changes between the options)
      Buffering: Auto-Detect (no performance difference between options)
      with these settings I have got the latency down to between 1/3 or 1/4 a second delay in the preview window
      overall i recommend the "pass thru" version for a few $ more

      You can burn the files to DVD as data files, but they would not be compatible with regular DVD players. The disk would play on some bluray players as mp4 files but not on regular DVD players. This being said, there is software made by freemake which converts mp4 and other video files to DVD type files that can play on normal DVD players.

    I'm still confused, when used to record something like a game console, can i still use a separate monitor? because doesn't game console only have 1 HDMI output? which means i can either use a monitor OR use the record device but can't be both?
    even if i could, i would've imagine it'll be extremely cluttered.
