I feel bad for Buckland. Yes, he behaves extremely badly as this episode progresses, but you get his motive right here: Jealousy, and general sadness and shame that he's not as good a commander as he hoped. Buckland's also past his prime: This IS his best and it's just not enough.
Buckland is the typical unimaginative career officer. Stick to the book, hands behind back like everything was alright only to be outshone by actual fighting men like Hornblower and Bush. Buckland acts more like an Army officer than a naval one
It was believed that the ability to swim would lenghten one's agonies of death in the event of a ship wreck. Fatalistic, yes? But isn't Robert Lindsay just completely terrific as Pellew? And it's good to see Paul 'Eight' McGann there too. What a brilliant series! I think I'm so converted that I'll just have to buy this this thing.
@7thSeekers - Sadly, Kennedy passes away at the end of this installment. Although Hornblower and Bush do later go on to be Captain and First Lieutenant of the Retribution (Renown renamed) and the Hotspur.
He should, but he didn't, and there probably wasn't anyone checking on whether he did have the ability. Being good at following orders and sticking to the rules is generally helpful at getting you promoted, and probably is to this day. The indecisiveness would only be noticable once he became a senior Lieutenant, and that's when he started to get passed over for promotions--continually. That last bit is Peter Principle at work: He was good until he wasn't, and only then did the promotions stop.
The amusing thing is that I know guys in the Navy, today, that can't swim. How do you get on something that other people want to sink without knowing how to swim?
You couldn't but the less inclined to do so, the better. Deserters hang if they are found. And since the Navy kept records and descriptions of conscriptees, you were most likely going to be found.
Actually most people in the navies of the world at that time couldn't. They mostly just reasoned that if they went overboard or the ship sank they were going to die anyway so why bother prolonging the struggle?
@NobleKorhedron Cancer? Cancer?! Dude, how thick are you? His wound festered, I thought that would be obvious. Back before antibiotics, that was a common cause of death. Cancer, seriously? Do you know how long cancer takes?
In Sheogorath's way of explaining it: Can he still rely on his training and knowledge and...all that nonsense? Sure, sure. Or, he could use, HIS STUPIDITY! No no, i feel pity for Buckland. They casted them all well, though, right from the book.
"What, in God's name!" "Captain James Sawyer, I apologize I'm not able to salute you" "how long has he been like this"? .... "I never wanted any of this" LOL!!!!
I think archie might be bi-polar, sort of in a not bad way, in that whatever his mood he will always be a friend to horatio. But his personality can vary from jovial and courageous to withdrawn and timid.
@NobleKorhedron so, if you knew all this how did you arrive at _cancer_ as a possible cause. More to the point, how did you not immediately rule it out? Question mark doesn't make you smarter, just like it doesn't make a journalist smarter who puts one behind a dumb sentence so he can say while pretending that he's he's not "really" saying it.
@tyrannusBE similarly, the line ' I never expected command to be easy, I expected to be fit for it' is very deep.
LOL..."privilege of rank..." I just love the interactions between Matthew and Stiles.
1:35-Apollo, Reed Richards, and The 8th Doctor. Gotta love it.
Me: "Okay, time to be productive."
TH-cam: "How about a constant stream of Sharpe and Hornblower video recommendations, ol' chap?"
Aye aye!
No Share no originality.
Matthews is indeed my favorite minor character....always so calm. and at 2:56 i feel he really treated hornblower like his own son....

I never expected it to be easy, I expected to be fit for it. Poor Buckland.

Captain Sawyer in this series is a really sympathetic character, and played magnificently. You just want to hold him when he finally sees his hands.
1:51 Bush: "I can't swim" and then that look on mathew's face.
Yeah, he's just not cut out for leadership, but he's not a bad man.
@7thSeekers - Sadly, Kennedy passes away at the end of this installment. Although Hornblower and Bush do later go on to be Captain and First Lieutenant of the Retribution (Renown renamed) and the Hotspur.
Nice scene that - sunset on a fine little sloop, Matthews at the tiller, and the deck swaying gently in tune with the swell.
"I CAN'T SWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIM!"
I feel nothing but pity and sorrow for Sawyer. Too long at sea.

I love the diving scene! =D
God, I feel sorry for Lt. Buckland in 4:16 . Poor bloke.
"I CAAANT SWIMMMMMM!!"
LOL THATS FUNNY
5 stars
Wow old comment

yes your captain will remember however he is still INSANE

@7thSeekers Unfortunately in the books, Bush dies at some point.
"Lord Hornblower." He was killed in an amphibious attack against Napoleonic troops, aiding French Royalists.
In Sheogorath's way of explaining it:

'I CANT SWEEEEEEEM!!' excellent.
"What, in God's name!"
"Captain James Sawyer, I apologize I'm not able to salute you"
"how long has he been like this"?
....
"I never wanted any of this"
LOL!!!!
Funny at the start but it descends into sadness
I kinda feel sorry for Buckland
Really? you could desert the ship in time of battle? how do u know that?
@ahenmaxtae Yes.... One would think someone enlisting in the navy would go through the trouble of learning how to swim....
I think archie might be bi-polar, sort of in a not bad way, in that whatever his mood he will always be a friend to horatio. But his personality can vary from jovial and courageous to withdrawn and timid.
Boy, you really get to understand Sawyer by the end of it, aye?
Aye!
would that jump not injure them slightly?
You guys I just realized this...The Captain of Marines in this episode is the guy at the helm on Titanic lol.
XD Oh, that was a nice adding by the writers, I do say.
@NobleKorhedron And yes, people have always gotten cancer, but seriously, you think C-S Forrester would give cancer to a war hero?
Sir Edward Pellew is the best!
WHAT?! And what about if the ship got sunk?! :-O
boys will be boys!(jump scene)
How come Willy Bush is wearing navy blue pants, unlike the other lieutenants?
@jam3s007b0nd That was actually quite common back then.
Mmmmm...Spanish ladies. Bonitas!
I CAN'T SWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIM
I can't swiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiim!
LOL
He really tried hard to hold back, didn't he? (At least he got halfway there.)
a lot of tiem, and a LOT of Scriptwriter's imagination :P
@555paint he tried to get Hornblower killed.
My dear Captain Sawyer :'(
I don't understand the conversation between Buckland and Bush, what does he mean he wasn't supposed to be fit for it?
Buckland means that He thought he would be good commander but he is not
hes got his jacket back how?
Which novel?
Bush can do anything... but swimming xD
@NobleKorhedron so, if you knew all this how did you arrive at _cancer_ as a possible cause. More to the point, how did you not immediately rule it out? Question mark doesn't make you smarter, just like it doesn't make a journalist smarter who puts one behind a dumb sentence so he can say while pretending that he's he's not "really" saying it.
some people beleived that being a good seaman ment you wern't a good swimer
absolutely:D
Do we ever figure out who pushed him?
It’s heavily implied to be Hornblower .
No. In this video, we clearly see that Archie and Hornblower tried to prevent Capt. Sawyer's fall.
"I CAN'T SWIM!" Honestly how can you be in the navy and not know how to swim?
BIBBITY BIBBITY BAH:)
Huzzah!
@Brandt761: Look, I missed Dr. Clive sniffing Bush, O.K.?!
How did Hornblower lay the charges all by himself?
lots of time
@Crazy4coffee It was also a superstition, tempting fate.
What is up with the quality.
"I can't swim" and you work in the navy!? haha
0:22 Happy new year! LOL XD
