  • In 1793, as England prepares for war with France, young Horatio Hornblower reports for duty aboard the battleship Justinian. His welcome to the Kings Navy is harsh, however, as the sadistic midshipman Simpson takes an instant dislike to the young sailor.
Transferred to the Indefatigable when war erupts, Hornblower proves his mettle in combat and catches the eye of the captain. But his career is threatened when they come upon the flaming wreckage of the Justinian and Simpson is among the survivors. On a vital mission, Simpsons treachery nearly costs Hornblower his life, and a final showdown is inevitable.
Starring Ioan Gruffud as Hornblower. Based on the novels by C.S. Forester. All rights reserved to A&E--I own nothing. Description taken from the back of the DVDs.

The proper technique is to stand to one side, toes clear of the wheels, lean over the barrel, sight the target, stand up quickly and *then* say "fire." Breeching ropes sometimes fail. A cannon with a service load and a real 24 pound ball will leap back and slam against the ropes.
But hey, on TV the cannons are held in place by plot armor.

The cannons are prevented from recoiling too far back by ropes. You just have to know how far back that is. It is also the best way to aim, sight down the cannon, particularly to time the rise and fall with the waves, although it looks like they were in a bay with models on a windless day. There were almost no waves to speak of.

I like the scene where Simpson keeps insulting Hornblower's honor, calling him a coward and all. Simpson is a petty bully at heart, and "rules" with fear. He interprets Hornblower's silence as confirmation that Hornblower fears him and persists in his insults, "solidifying" his power over Hornblower, or so he believes. But then Captain Pellew informs him that Hornblower has been ordered to not engage in duels and Simpson realizes that Hornblower doesn't fear him. It's all conveyed in a small second on screen with a glance, but that is the moment Simpson understands that he has no power over Hornblower.

Although the series is not faithful to the first three books. For example the last two episodes in the series is not what is written within Hornblower and the Hotspur. Pellew was not in command of the Channel Squadron and did not promote Hornblower to the rank of Commander but Admiral Cornwallis. Another key point was that Hornblower was hold as a POW for a period of seven years before earning his release and was promoted to Lieutenant during the time.

He's hard-as-nails, bookish, blunt, quick to anger but underneath an honorable God fearing man. that shot from that distance and angle without the round going through hornblower first is quite of an example of god not being on the side of battalions but of best shots.

Love the tv series, but the way the duel was handled in the book was exquisite. Simpson didn't die, he was epically humiliated and out maneuvered

Meanwhile, Pellew hits with what I imagine is a musket and not a rifle, center mass, at a distance that might seem for a musket to be properly OBSCENE.

@@JnEricsonx well, if they wanna make a historically correct movie, then they would adress it in the tittle :) if not so, then they can do whatever they want! Simply the wonders of making movies ^^ which don't has to be 100% accurate :) as for most people can't really tell the difference between a Musket, and a Rifle :) its not even a big deal in this case ^^

I was channel surfing back in the early 2000s and caught the episode with them storming the fortress. Decided it was interesting to watch and then I went out and got the complete series on DVD.
I knew of the novels and the character, but wasn't that invested in it. After watching the series, I thoroughly enjoyed it. So many scenes of him proving himself, sticking to his guns, and earning the respect of the men (them returning with him to the prison stands out).

Okay might be a silly question but: Why does Hornblower have to run past every cannon and yell "Fire!"? Is it just a film thing? Because it makes more sense to me for him to just stay up higher where he was and yell "Fire all!" or some such and his men pass the order to fire along as they go.

Not enough credit is given to actor Robert Lindsay aka Capt. Edward Pelew (Please correct if I got his name wrong).
Of course the entire cast is fantastic!
    Ioan Grufud; ALL of them.
Of course the later novels MUST be done of the older Hornblower with the now older Grufud. In fact; I'd like to see them as movies!
I would happily pay and take time from my day to watch at a theater.
Something I quite frankly don't do anymore.
Lindsay is phenomenal and gives more to the series more than most of us fans can understand or appreciate.

      @charlieross-BRM ปีที่แล้ว

He's every bit as good or better at being convincing than the lead actor. Maybe the director over coached Grufud to be unsure of himself most of the time.

Didn't Hornblower violate a crazy number of laws by not running up the English colors? Like, for all the French and English hated each other and were involved in a bloody war for a long time...that's the kind of thing that could easily have put Hornblower in prison.

Senior officers were always able to purchase private weapons of far better class (think Purdey) than those issued to the troops.
      Rifles fell into this category.
Even during WW1 the British only started sniping effectively when they got far more accurate weapons that were bought by officers for "private hunting".
