    At least that Sergeant was fairly honest in his recruiting tactics. In times gone by in the British Army, truly unscrupulous recruiters would go into a tavern and slip silver shillings under the men's ale tankards. The man would see it, pick up the coin thinking he was lucky, and inadvertently, "take the King's shilling!" Recruiters that did that, were as Sharpe would say, "Bloody Bastards!"

    • @ludo9234
      @ludo9234 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That's why they had tankards with glass bottoms' as they sometimes put the shilling in the drink.

    • @funnycreature2331
      @funnycreature2331 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      This is a bit of urban myth. To be recruited, you had to attest before a magistrate within a week to settle your affairs, debts, apprenticeships also to check records in case you had any criminal past or previous attestments etc (atleast by the time of the napoleonic wars) . It wasn't done as underhandedly as that, since the army functioned at its best when men voluntarily wanted to serve rather than press ganged or given a choice of prison or service (both of which happened very little in the 18th. However the navy is very much the exact opposite and press ganged loads.)
      Then again, the recruiting Sergent here working for simmerson's corrupt commision racket probably isn't doing everything by the book as to not give the game away!
      Just some observations from a nerd with too much time on my hands.

      Ha, can't really mention Sharpe and Band of Brothers in the same breath!
      Don't get me wrong, love them both, but Band of Brothers is a true epic, massive budget, ensemble cast, a modern masterpiece. Sharpe must have only used about a dozen extras, on a shoestring budget, made the Battle of Waterloo look like a minor skirmish, but it was a great 90s drama nevertheless!
