I love this series but the amount of time they've been saved in the nick of time by a massive group or ship that the enemy would have 100% have seen coming from a mile away lmao.
To be fair Bush arrived with the boats from behind some rocks, and the French were looking the other way. The warp-speed Indy in "Frogs and Lobsters" though...
considering it was Wolfe who set the fire that got Styles flogged, it was light punishment. He even gets to be the main bad guy in the next episode, a rarity in Hornblower.
Indeed, these series become more and more hollywood like, with people jumping away from explosions, weird escapes, unrealistic last minute saves, one sided fights and over the top heroics.
Or as sung by the combat toughened marine lieutenant in South Pacific: "They've got to be taught before its too late before they are six or seven or eight, To hate all the people their relatives hate. They've got to be carefully taught....
I think he means look up the meaning of the signal flag from the flag ship...it was meant to stall for time since Bush didn't want to retreat and it would take a while to the look up the signal in the book.
Harper and Sharp would destroyed him and I think Hornblower and Bush as well as Cotard and crew would been seen as worthy and hounerebul men to Sharp and his men
Guess the Froggies didn't notice 200 heavily armed red-coated marines slowly sneaking up from the sea in row boats right in front of their swarthy faces. No wonder we won the Napoleonic wars and every other war besides. Our soldiers are invisible.
the thing with this series is that they never notice any other ships until they are right in front of them. I'm pretty sure Bush would be in plain view to the french as he assaulted the beach
Hornblower should have spotted something - When Wolfe came to stop him blowing the powder, he was with several french troops plus Hammond. Yet he was surprised later on on the beach. Surely Hornblower would have remembered seeing Hammond by Wolfe's side!
Funny how two longboats full of red coated English marines would not be seen by a few dozen men looking in the boats direction. Stealthy sons of a gun.
Nothing shows respect from Mr Bush then handing you a pistol,Major Cotard might have been a pain in beginning but he showed himself to be deserving of respect
The enemy within never respects. Glad to see Mr. Hornblower's friends he didn't know he had are bringing him a new RED JACKET with lots of buttons. See how they even hid behind that wave even, waiting for the enemy within to make its last move? The bottom line is in my name, like yours Jack:)
LOL,,, Just a minute earlier, Hornblower appeared to be injured and wasn't even able to walk without support. (look at 3:24) Now, at 6:30, he fights superbly well. Miracles after miracles...
there are multiple accounts of soldiers not even noticing gunshot wounds or fractures during combat because of the adrenaline, HH could very well only have sustained some bruises and minor blast trauma so him fighting on in this situation isn't that impossible
Earlier Hammond messed up reading a signal from the flagship, fumbling in his book while wasting precious time. He is certain this time that Pellew is ordering a retreat but Bush, who has been on his case ever since he first arrived, buys some time for Hornblower to return to the Hotspur by making him look it up.
Well two out of the three I suspected, of Wolfe, Cotard, and Hammand, of being the Traitors, Wolfe and Hammand turned out to be the ones. Never fully believed Wolfe was innocent. Hammand always seemed peevish.
Cotard was, to me the least suspect. Considering that Louis XVIII was resident in England and in fact sent the force of loyalists in Frogs and Lobsters, it was surprising that Cotard didn't have some sort of royal remit to do what he did. Wolfe was always suspicious, from the moment Bush asked him why he went to Portsmouth instead of staying in the northern convoys.
Actually I thought Horation's conversation with Pellew implies that Hammond's treachery was being covered up for the sake of his family. Jack Jr. would probably receive a mention in dispatches though.....
Hammond was a high ranking Irish officer in an otherwise Anglo-Scottish navy. If word got out that he betrayed the Navy the other Irishmen in the fleet would all be suspect of treachery, given the stirrings of rebellion back home it would have been better to say he was a hero for the British. Hammond's family is a consideration, but they would rather have a living Jack and his uncle.
@4:03 the advancing french dudes, I so wanted them to accidently blow up on a line of landmines from the dudes in WW2 at the charge of Normandy. Dunno why but this scene reminds me of the landing of Normandy.
@Factnotfictionpeople Thanx, cuz I'm Australian, all the fun u guys have we don't know about cuz we r so far away! I wishd we could study ur history. But the only thing we learned about the brits was colonisation, the world wars and the fifties.
first wellard now hammond. all the cute femme ones die. who's horny horatio and bush gonna go riding with?! hahahhahahahhahhahaha tis is spoiling my fun.
I would agree with you if you would be so kind as to restore the spoils of war but when you as a "new" national knowingly use all of the riches that were gathered from invasion or war you are just as responsible as your forefathers
@yourfireinside It is still apart of the Commonwealth, which to me is an evolution of the old Empire, only with self rule for each member state. When the Irish stop trying to take the North through violence, then maybe will I respect them.
at the time Ireland was suffering from British indifference and a long, abusive rule. In the earliest part of the episode Hornblower even captures an Irish sailor who sailed on Nelson's ship the Victory, fighting for the French. The Irish Rebellion of 1798 was fresh in the minds of most at the time. Even after the Napoleonic Wars Ireland suffered under British rule, especially during the potato famines of the mid 19th century.
Hahaha, Stiles and Hornblower after that explosion was funny as.
"Trust me, I'm a cook." Smart ass.
2:44 only just realised that captain Hammond comes through the door with wolf on his left side
That would have spoiled a good story!
Whipping someone with your belt instead of killing him outright? That's... wait that's not soldiering or sailoring.
But when it's kicking the shit out of the man who framed you and got you whipped....that's HARPERING! Don't lie-he'd have done the same to Hakeswill.
considering it was Wolfe who set the fire that got Styles flogged, it was light punishment. He even gets to be the main bad guy in the next episode, a rarity in Hornblower.
Thats Stylsing 🤣
Indeed, these series become more and more hollywood like, with people jumping away from explosions, weird escapes, unrealistic last minute saves, one sided fights and over the top heroics.
"You alright Sir?"
"....a bit...singed Stiles."
Styles gave Wolfe the whipping of a life time in the middle of a heavy battle XD
It would have been better if Wolfe was on the gratings but Styles took what he could get
Tell you what - this tv minser. Got me into some very enjoyable reading - HORNBLOWER reminds me of CAPTAIN KIRK and MR SPOCK in one
Or as sung by the combat toughened marine lieutenant in South Pacific:
"They've got to be taught
before its too late
before they are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people
their relatives hate.
They've got to be carefully taught....
Sir Barriston Selmy has lost some of his sword skills. He couldn't carve a cake like that :)
Hornblower cut a cake though.
nothing like hearing Bush's voice right when you're thinking they're all going to die, yes!
loved the series, too bad they arent making any new ones.
I think he means look up the meaning of the signal flag from the flag ship...it was meant to stall for time since Bush didn't want to retreat and it would take a while to the look up the signal in the book.
I love that lesson. "Yes I know he's right but by the time he looks it up in the book."
hammond needs to meet harper
God Save The King ... Say It! :-)
Possibly the most niche references I've ever seen, unreal
Harper and Sharp would destroyed him and I think Hornblower and Bush as well as Cotard and crew would been seen as worthy and hounerebul men to Sharp and his men
@@alphalunamare GOD. SAVE. IRELAND!!!
Mr Hammond, if you see anyone doing anything not in the manual...
Give him a pint of rum
Ser Barriston Selmy would not have been so easily bested in a swordfight.
He did that to delay, since the signal was to withdraw. Bush was thinking of Hornblower on shore.
Guess the Froggies didn't notice 200 heavily armed red-coated marines slowly sneaking up from the sea in row boats right in front of their swarthy faces. No wonder we won the Napoleonic wars and every other war besides. Our soldiers are invisible.
Hammond and Wolfe had already betrayed the plan, which is why the French were lurking.
I love how nice and clean and white Style's trousers are at 02:35, considering he had to make his way through shit and sewage water just before :-).
the thing with this series is that they never notice any other ships until they are right in front of them. I'm pretty sure Bush would be in plain view to the french as he assaulted the beach
Ah, only a good explosion makes a Hornblower movie. :]
Hornblower should have spotted something - When Wolfe came to stop him blowing the powder, he was with several french troops plus Hammond. Yet he was surprised later on on the beach. Surely Hornblower would have remembered seeing Hammond by Wolfe's side!
It was dark and dusty and Hornblower just escaped death so I excuse him for not realizing Hammond.
@@FannyDash 10 years... 10 long years I have waited for a reply
LOL Styles flogging Wolfe.
"Karma" ➰
HMS Indy moving at the same speed as the USS Enterprise
was that orrick being put into the building with the french at 0:12?
Funny how two longboats full of red coated English marines would not be seen by a few dozen men looking in the boats direction. Stealthy sons of a gun.
@2:53 how did both Hornblower and Wolfe survive that huge explosion?😂
hahahahah @00:14 they push all the remaining frenchies out of the cannon yard... but they also push the midshipmen out :P LOL
He save Hammond as well. It was funny because Foster and Hammond were arguing.
1:52 poor guy, the last thing he hears before dying is being called an imbecile
They didn’t see the boat arriving, before they fired ? 6:07
Nothing shows respect from Mr Bush then handing you a pistol,Major Cotard might have been a pain in beginning but he showed himself to be deserving of respect

Nobody in that entire company of French saw the two boats coming ashore?
LOL,,, Just a minute earlier, Hornblower appeared to be injured and wasn't even able to walk without support. (look at 3:24) Now, at 6:30, he fights superbly well. Miracles after miracles...

What does Bush mean @ 1:20-1:25....? "but by the time he's looked it up in the book"?
Earlier Hammond messed up reading a signal from the flagship, fumbling in his book while wasting precious time.
He is certain this time that Pellew is ordering a retreat but Bush, who has been on his case ever since he first arrived, buys some time for Hornblower to return to the Hotspur by making him look it up.
He has his hopes that HH will eventually prevail on shore, so he let's the incompetent midshipman waste some time to buy HH some more
"That'll learn 'em!"
also Stiles, the only man that stops to whip a man during combat.
"Karma" ➰
@fist505 Now THAT is dedication! Gotta love Stiles.....
5:25 We shall weep manly tears.

What is Styles saying after the explosion?
You're cooked to a turn sir, trust me I'm a cook!
ha! "Trust me I´m a cook"
40 men and officers looking seaward, and no one sees board in the background? One of the few poor devices, but a very poor one.
ahhh, the royal marines to the rescue! :)
funny how they never saw two boats rowing up to an open beach
It’s a fairy tale, just enjoy the storyline
not one man prays, when facing death, in an age and society in which virtually every adult, 99.999%, were Christian?
Firing the pistol directly in front of the powder magazine. Really risky stuff
his pants seem to have been to the cleaners since the trip through the privy

Major Cotard reminds me of one of my French professors.
apparently British Marines are like the loaves and fishes...they keep multiplying
funny how all those ships being shot at don't have crews...
British stealth boat technology
@4:03 the advancing french dudes, I so wanted them to accidently blow up on a line of landmines from the dudes in WW2 at the charge of Normandy. Dunno why but this scene reminds me of the landing of Normandy.
It's set in Brittany rather than Normandy. The only innaccuracy is that there is no rain
grat show ,pity it can't be watched it is that badly downloaded
@NobleKorhedron Yeah I have always wondered that aswell.
youd think as the french are facing the sea they would see the boat coming? :S
LOL @ the frenchman biting Styles' leg!!!!
7:54 😭😭😭😭NOOOOO PLEAS!😭😭😭😭
Yeah, thats right!! Who saves the day?? My BUSHY!!!!!!

@WhiteRabbitm8te peoples eye sight was horrible back then because of too much computer, luckily

isnt it abit weird how an army facing the sea not 1 man see the ship coming in to attack!
I love Hammonds accent He may be a traitor but his Voice is nearly as sexy as the Voice of Mr Bush
The Pride of Real Irishmen 05.27
Wolf isn't above using his teeth eh?
hornblower did and he was but a young pup aboard the indi
Captain Hammond did the right thing. He would have been hung as a traitor anyways.
