You vid popped up in my feed several days ago and I've been ignoring it because I don't know you. Got bored and finally watched. You're the real deal! /subscribed Keep up the good work!
You are making the best Cosmere content (Aside from the great Sanderson himself) on TH-cam! I have been hungry for content like this, you page is going to explode dude!
I found your channel just after your first of these 3 big Cosmere videos, and got an instant sub. I have been looking for a good cosmere lore channel for a long time and with these 3 videos you are killing it. It feels to me a bit like the old school fudgemuppet Elder Scrolls lore video's but on a slightly different take. Looks to me now in this video you are currently going for some kind of world hopper traveling the cosmere. I have to say I love this idea and like it to expand. Maybe by taking the identity of a world singer or an professor at a Silverlight university. Just teaching us about the cosmere from the perspective of someone living there.
I’m glad you found me! I’m not familiar with fudgemuppet, I’ll have to check them out. I’m not sure how far I’m going to go with the in-universe plot line. We’ll see if momentum on these videos continues.
Brandon has said that he'll never confirm or deny whether or not Adonalsium or the God Beyond are the One True Creator God because that would undermine his attempts to make characters like Jasnah have reasonable points in their arguments and make them explicitly wrong in their Atheism or Agnosticism. He also says he'll never say whether or not there is a True Afterlife that characters go to when pulled into the Beyond. He just likes leaving some things a permanent mystery.
Y'know, until I watched this, I was operating under the assumption that Adonalsium _was_ the God Beyond, and that those following that faith simply didn't know there wasn't a difference. Your evidence, on the other hand, is rather convincing. However, if the God Beyond _does_ have a connection to silver in some way (as implied by the passage from Silence Montane), that, to me, says that it's unlikely that the God Beyond is associated with the Aethers, unless the corrupted Aethers on Lumar are much more heavily altered than I initially believed - after all, the residents of Lumar have a saying: "Salt and _silver_ stop the killer." Aethers wither and turn to dust in contact with silver, and proximity to a sufficient quantity is enough to deter Aether constructs. If the God Beyond were related to the Aethers, why would its symbol be the one thing that reliably _stops_ the Aethers?
I think Brandon recently said that silver would not "kill" a spren, it would just cause more of an interference. The only thing so far that can kill one is with anti-investiture. Dont quote me on that though, there are so many WoBs that its hard to keep all of it straight.
Looking back at the WoB I cited, you're right. He mentions interference with spren in that one, but I do remember hearing one about killing spren with silver (tbh I hope that's not true. I am quite a fan of the radiant spren we've seen so far) but I can't seem to find it now. And yeah, it's hard to keep WoBs straight and current.
Great video man. I've been scouring the internet for Cosmere content and yours is one of the best I've found. Keep it up dude! Whenever an adaptation would be made, your channel is going to explode in popularity (Cmon Brandon you can do it) Anyways thanks for making a video on the God Beyond. I stumbled onto its wiki page on the Coppermind and have been fascinated by it ever since. Personally, I believe the God Beyond is actually the one who somehow betrayed Adonalsium and became a separate entity on its own. Maybe Silver is its God Metal?? Who knows? Well other than Brandon that is... Subscribing to you now and will support you for the furure!
That last part, I personally think the dawnshards are going to be like the infinity stones. Like when they came into being, Adonalsium came into being kind of a situation.
He says the same thing for the Aethers despite their in universe claim of existing before Adonalsium. I don't disagree with you, but I figured it wasn't so far out of the realm of possibility that it wasn't worth mentioning. I think I even say in the video that I don't think the dawnshards could have existed without Adonalsium because only a being like it could have made the dawnshards.
So good, great videos, loving your channel! I still think there was something else other than Adonalsium that was so feared that the 16 thought their only way out was to splinter god. And I think the Aether are related to that. Is it an opposition to adonalsium? is it evil? i dunno, knowing sanderson is not gonna be something so easy that I can speculate about, but i do think there is something.
1:09 You say that all investiture traces back to Adonalsium, but that Aethers also predate Adonalsium. However, we've also seen an aetherbound person use a jar of purified Dor to fuel their aether growth in The Lost Metal. So do Aethers naturally use some form of investiture that does not originate from Adonalsium, or are they just able to hijack the power for their unrelated system?
I think it depends. In The Lost Metal they mention that aethers constructs can persist in “investiture fields”. I think aethers can use ambient investiture or pull directly from the spiritual realm via the Luhel bond with a primal Aether. Probably the same mechanics as Aether spores. I think they’re more versatile in the source of investiture they can use. Maybe because they predate the shattering they can use investiture keyed to any shard if it’s accessible. Maybe like blood types. Aethers and investiture pre-shattering are o-negative. After the shattering the different shards are like different blood types?
I'll add it to the list of potential videos! Thanks! I do try to avoid character and story spoilers where possible, so that video could be a tricky one to make.
So I'm 8 months behind and haven't finished the video, but something I thought of, hearing how Adonalsium is both investiture and anti-investiture, and all the Shards we've seen are specifically investiture, what if the "God Beyond" is the god of anti-investiture? Like when Adonalsium was shattered, everything we've seen in the Cosmere is just the one Investiture half of Its powers? Alternatively, I have heard the "Cosmere" used to refer to the specific galaxy all the planets are in, so what if the God Beyond is simply the equivalent of Adonalsium, but of another galaxy? What if Adonalsium wasn't alone?
The idea of the god beyond being widespread is not surprising, as the cosmological argument for a transcendent creator is pretty common in different forms. If there are contingent things, there must be one non-contingent first mover upon which they are contingent, and an infinite regress of divine creatures doesn't answer this.
I'm new to the cosmere, so this may be a known theory. I think that Adonalsiums shattering wasn't the first such event. I think there was a being that was shattered/split into at least six beings/forces. Adonalsium, the four Dawnshards and something else. It's a very shallow theory, I know.
That’s a cool theory! I just finished the non-canonical Dragonsteel Prime, and there’s a group of characters that could potentially support this theory in there!
I think that could end up being the case. I'd love to learn more about how the religion is practiced and how the god beyond is worshipped. I think we could eventually get more of that, but as for specifics on the nature of It and the Beyond? Probably just RAFO's forever.
I can see two obvious explanations 1) The God Beyond is an actual original universal creator deity who deliberately does not intervene or make themselves known. They created or left behind the Dawnshards which were subsequently used to create - and then later shatter - Adonalsium. 2) The God Beyond doesn't exist...YET. It is whatever emerges if anyone (Hoid?) ever tries to re-assemble Adonalsium (or whatever remains of it) 1) is a bit too overtly Christian, so I doubt Brandon will go for that when he has tried to avoid that thus far. 2) could be fun because then you could get timey-wimey stuff like the God Beyond reaching back through time to subtly meddle here and there to ensure it gets created in the first place...
It’s royalty free music I purchased from humble bundle a year or two ago. If you’re interested in titles, I could let you know when I get back to my computer on Tuesday.
Howdy! Thanks for the comment! I do talk about the Aethers at 7:04 but the investiture they draw from may still be linked to Adonalsium. It all depends on whether or not their claim of predating Adonalsium is true or if they just predate the shattering.
@@jasonioanThe God beyond? :) Seriously though, it wouldn't surprised me if we just kept discovering layers beneath layers. In a way it wouldn't really need to be answered, I believe it fits well with Sanderson's personal religious views as well.
There’s always another secret, eh? I think we’ll learn more about the in world religion, but not much about the being or concept that is The God Beyond.
Good catch! Khriss says 16 because she knows the origins of the 16 original vessels. Hoid was there. He held one of the dawnshards that was used to shatter Adonalsium, but he didn’t take up a shard. So when he says he “said those words with 16 other people in fact” it brings the total up to 17.
I don't want adonalsium and the God Beyond to be Deities like in Christianity or other religions. Give me some cosmic horror, Lovecraftian Gods. I want some Eldrich flavor in my Cosmere soup.
I think Sanderson is going for a distinctly non Christian style god, but I'm also not sure he's going the eldritch direction either. We might get something close to that with "The Evil" on Threnody.
Adonelsium=cosmere god in sunlight man nomads spren is recognized as a part of a shard of adonelsium..i think ado is the one who became many to experience all.
What a very Iriali way to think of things! I actually had an entire section of this video about “The One” but decided to cut it because worship of the one is tied to the Shattering and Adonalsium himself and not so much to things beyond it. Nomads spren is a part of a shard of Adonalsium. Aux, and all spren, are splinters of Honor and Cultivation. So you’re right there!
You have an absolutely fantastic presentation style.

So glad to see that the TH-cam natives with big channels find the small channels that I do too!
I love seeing people I respect showing respect and appreciation for each other.
I gotta say, the reaction to the hinted "Grand Apparatus" got me pretty hyped.
Agreed! It was a moment I wish I was there to see in person.

Could the God Beyond be the actual creator god, and Adonalsium and dawn shards be creations of it? Hm...
The big structures could also come from the Shard Invention.
The idea has crossed my mind and I think it could be a cool concept. A Shard whose machinations have lied undetected for years.
