    I also do all my own work.... Just a tip on keeping the ground clean. I break down my large cardboard box deliveries, fold em flat and set em aside I throw them down 1st before fluid changes and let the cardboard soak it up if the the pan misses some fluids. If they get splashed, I just throw them away and no clean up. Definitely a job, Id rather have the extra elbow room with some drive up ramps in front.

      Some good tips there for sure. We started using cardboard after this messy oil change and now our process too.

      @@KeepItDirtyOffRoad I went with your earlier advice and bought a new Gen 3 vs Gen 1.
      I run Fumotos in all my stuff and will on my G3. Any chance you remember if you needed the spacer to run on your G2 oil pan? Their site says the generic, "spacers may be needed to clear plug well". I'm sure the G2 and G3 oil pans are the same and what you did when you installed will be the same.

      My 2020 gen2 did not need a spacer from what I remember. There may be some differences with the gen3 though so I would check the fumoto site to be sure

      b pospolyta caught me by surprise. Was so used to changing the oil on the 17. Next time I’ll be using some cardboard to try and redirect it better to make less of a mess

    I feel your pain...Installed a Fumoto drain plug to ease that pain. I don't use a hose. Made a trough from an old roasting pan to direct the flow.
    My first oil change went like yours.
    Later, I was on the White Rim Trail and noticed oil dripping under the Raptor. I freaked out until realizing it was oil which had pooled in the skid plate and had found its' angle of repose on a steep incline.
    Also, I always lay out a large blue tarp to catch the inevitable spills.
    Also, built some 3 ply ramps from 2 x 10s which give me an extra 4 1/2 inches of elbow room.

    so only 4 bolts to take that big skid plate off?? I appreciate you donating your driveway , I would not have been so calm, been using amsoil forever, great stuff

    • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad

      frank reinhardt 4 bolts to the frame and 2 smaller bolts it shared with the mid skid plate. Easy removal, just takes a while.

    So best way to do this take off all plates off just to be safe

    • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad
      @KeepItDirtyOffRoad  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Nah. Some cardboard can help route the oil. Taking off the whole skid plate is a big job and takes forever

    Those crappy looking plastic sockets that fit the end of the oil filters really do work fantastic. With a extention you can get in places not ment for the human arm when laying in the dirt.

    Helped me out a lot. Was ready to install a Ronin plug too, but that changed when I discovered the used 17 raptor I recently purchased has an aluminum oil pan and not plastic 😬

    • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad
      @KeepItDirtyOffRoad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheHAZMAT221 nice! That’s an expensive upgrade on the 17s too. In order to swap out the oil pan, you need to remove the steering rack

    Do you have any videos on the aluminum oil pan? Just heard about this 2 days ago and I'm looking for information on what I need to get this done. I have a 17 raptor

    • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad
      @KeepItDirtyOffRoad  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      17 raptors don’t come with the metal oil pan. To install it you need a new pickup tube and the whole front differential has to be dropped to install it.
      For the 17, look into the ronin valve. It’s composite just like the 17 oil pan and makes oil changes super easy

    We recently bought a 2018 Raptor. I completely agree with the break-in oil change despite what the manuals recommend. On our last 2013 3.5 Ecoboost I used the semi synthetic every 3k to 4K and never had any issues and the oil always looked awesome. So I’m wondering because I have no idea what oil is in this 18 Raptor engine with 6,000 miles on the motor. 1) What are your thoughts on changing or putting synthetic oil in now not knowing what was in it before? 2) why are you recommending the synthetic over the semi-Synthetic? I am wondering if you go extended intervals before changes or if your still aggressively changing between 3k and perhaps 5k. Because I’d guess you more of a severe service interval house than we are? Im super curious. I’m getting mine changed next week at the dealer due to the fact I got some free oil changes with the truck. I will need to pay up for the synth oil at the dealer if that what I go with.
    The engine oil is looking fairly dirty when checking it so I know it’s due and most likely overdue. Laughed my arse off when I heard bad words. Now this sounds like our house when tinkering in the garage.

    • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad
      @KeepItDirtyOffRoad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      munk469 the engine should not be impacted if you decide to go to full synthetic. You really can’t go wrong with full synthetic oil. It’s going back to blend or regular oil that can cause damage.
      As for interval, the 3-5k or even 6k oil change makes no sense to me. Specially with the high quality synthetic oils these days. I did 10k oil changes on my last raptor and had no engine problems in 64k miles I plan on doing the same with this Raptor. Even though I fall under severe use because of the off-roading. But again, with a high quality oil, a 10k oil change won’t damage the engine.
      Now other areas like the diff and transfer case, the stock oil quality surprised me. Will definitely be changing those earlier than the severe use recommendation of 60k. I changed mine at 50k on the last truck and it was wayyyy to dark.

    Hello, I am a big fan of your videos! Thank you for sharing your experience. Here is a silly question for you: I have a mid-2019 802A Raptor and the Oil life percentage does not show on my dash. Do you have one, please? Many thanks.

      Eric Leygues yes, it’s buried in the menus. But it’s there. I forget which one it’s at, but it’s in there for sure. Maybe in the one with all the extra gauges

      @@KeepItDirtyOffRoad Thank you very much for your super fast answer! You are right, I just found it. It is now (since 2018) in the Advanced settings page, Oil life entry. Well hidden indeed. Before, it was displayed on the Engine Information page, and there is no indication in the 2019 Manual. Keep up the good work! Thank you again.

    I don't think you should use high milage because I believe this causes seals to swell to help any engine oil leaks on high milage vehicles.

    • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad
      @KeepItDirtyOffRoad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      sixshooter4570 did I use high mileage? I though I just got their regular signature series. So far truck haven’t complained and driving good. May try their boosted oil next.

    You need to add an oil catch can. Benefits almost any turbo vehicle.

    • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad
      @KeepItDirtyOffRoad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I heard that a lot man, but I’ve seen too many trucks with catch cans have problems.

    • @chriswoodard8813
      @chriswoodard8813 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep It Dirty Off-Road I have an air oil separator in my built Subaru WRX STI. You don’t have to empty the catch can and performs the same job. If I had one of the newer Raptors that would be one of the top things I would get.

    • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad
      @KeepItDirtyOffRoad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Woodard I get the oil part, but if it’s so needed why don’t manufactures use them? Not one used them. I’ve heard too that the vacuum effect they need to create to collect oil affects the engine big time. The ecoboost engine will pull to mining reducing power with a catch can and eventually can cause long term affects to the engine. I’m going to skip that mod for a while. Need more concrete proof the benefits don’t cause damage in the long run.

      Nice video bud. Just got my truck yesterday and am dreading the first change. Question: would it be easier to just drop the whole skid plate or is that more of a pain in the ass?

    • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad
      @KeepItDirtyOffRoad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      More of a pain. Those bolts are long and it takes forever. Better to just make a makeshift funnel from some cardboard or get one of those shape-able funnels. Also look into fumoto valves to make future oil changes easier

  • @neilcastelli1315

  • @Thamac15

    I think people just don’t understand oil. You didn’t expect it to be so dark after 1k miles? It’s doing it’s job, cleaning. People act like oil is suppose to stay honey colored for thousands of miles. Oil cools, cleans, lubricates, and seals. Dirty oil equals job being done. You have far more silicon in the first 10k miles than you do metal particulates. These aren’t your grandfathers vehicles, modern engines and modern oil technology does not require a 1k oil change interval in the beginning. You all are wasting money. But what do I know, I’ve only been a gas/diesel engine and gas turbine compressor mechanic for over 20 years with thousands of oil JOAPs under my belt. If anyone doesn’t know what a JOAP is, use your google machines.
