For those of you coming into this program remembering what we could've gotten in 20I6, wishfully Super Retro GP's eventual release and success will eventually lead to a sequel that sets out to do what Lucky Mountain Games had tried to deliver before Sumo Digital slammed down its vision a few years later: As many of you will remember, Racing Apex was originally set to bring back the template of Virtua Racing and add a Projectile Combat system to bring its formula more on par with how Columns III delivered a similar genre shift to its franchise, it was a core element of why the game was highly acclaimed on both TH-cam and Tumblr during Fiscal Year 20I6 and for many fans of the early Virtua Era this would've easily become a cult classic for this era had the game not been picked up by Sumo Digital; the end result of the game that we got, Hotshot Racing, was heavily reworked into a generic VR~esque and the combat system was confined solely to its Cops and Robbers play mode, the primary method of play getting sidelined this way truly left a very sour taste in many people's mouths upon HSR's release and I wouldn't be surprised if this was a corporate decision because of Sumo not really being known for Combat Racing that is more mature than what we have gotten from Sega's All~Stars Racing dualogy and Team Sonic Racing, it still hurts today and that is why I am happy that we have other projects such as Super Retro GP in development in a time where Racing Apex's Alpha Builds have still not been released to the public.
While I don't anticipate that Super Retro GP will implement the general functions of Racing Apex, fate knows that there will be somebody who plays its Demo or the Retail Build that will mod the combat system in: If you have the time to watch RA's preview footage (if it still exists, at the time of typing), every car was given unique characters and weapons alongside its individual stats, the Maximum Health of the car was apparently handled similarly to Street Fighter III: Third Strike in the nature that Attack Power and Physical Durability were relatively balanced and scaled to accommodate for every opponent and in many ways this would've made it a very sophisticated and delicate experience whenever you successfully eliminated one of your opponents from play; Elimination of a player would happen if they either lose all of their health or the timer makes it to 00, and with Virtua Racing's Time Bonus Checkpoint system in play you were very likely to run out of time if you play on the harder presets before you ever run the risk of getting wiped out by the competition.
In the long run, Super Retro GP truly has the opportunity to do something pleasant with this concept, even if it doesn't come in its inaugural entry the combat system would truly work wonders in a sequel to keep the experience fresh and deliver to players what we were wishing to see north of Eight Years ago; there will always be a heightened demand for Low Poly Gaming action, and with us having a Starfox clone in the Indie scene (Ex~Zodiac) and the source code of Avara (I996) having been released a while back to port it to Modern Era systems (running Windows, Linux, and MacOS), Super Retro GP will feel right at home during this current trend, the potential is far beyond what we are witnessing today and I can only imagine what will come from both the final product and many potential successors. (:

I really like this style and combination of low and high tech, low polygon models with modern lighting and shading. It works because its simple and clean.
I feel like modern games have too much visual clutter sometimes, and because everything is being displayed on a 2D screen, things just start to blend together. The other game that does this style really well is walkabout minigolf.

In my opinion, there's a niche market for retro gamers where this flat polygons games work. I wish more of this retro games appear, blending the present with the past (for example, flat polygon graphics, but with 24 cars on track, championship mode with 12, 16 races, winner cinematic scene, high resolution, high frame rates, etc). I like how many metroid like games the indie developers do, but I think most miss one important point, that it's the superb pixel art from the 16 bit games. Some are sprite based, but too much modern to look like a Snes game (graphically speaking; the gameplay MUST be modernized, with all the bells and whistles modern gaming has).
For people that like this throwback graphically, there's the Virtua Fighter 10th anniversary, from Sega itself, that takes characters from VF3 and VF4, and turn them into the Virtua Fighter 1 graphics (alongside the classic roster), with the VF 4 gameplay. It's amazing!

    • @SEGAGuys
      @SEGAGuys  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

The Saturn version of Virtua Racing was made by Time Warner, who were only given a Virtua Racing arcade machine for reference to recreate the game. No source code was supplied by Sega.
The result is a game that yes, has more content, but its handling is nowhere near the same as the arcade version and the timing is off. It doesn’t play like Virtua Racing at all.
The Mega Drive version, despite its lower frame rate and resolution, is closer to the arcade experience in terms of gameplay than the Saturn version is.
That’s why the games’ full title is “Time Warner Interactive’s Virtua Racing”. - James.

    Here’s my quick breakdown
Looks the part, sounds the part, but controls nothing like Virtua racing, I’m not saying it’s meant to but it’s much more floaty and jittery to move around.
It feels light and less connected to the road. The car feels like it’s gliding which can make the driving feel less satisfying. It lacks the nuance of Virtua racing, feels like the only thing you really have to worry about is turning left and right.
The steering is less detailed and intricate compared to Virtua Racing. In Virtua Racing the steering has more subtle elements and refined feedback that make it feel more engaging.
Graphics are super crisp, the aesthetic is nailed on, i would like to see a gamma slider control to give the track and trackside detail more contrast and shadowy and look less pale . I’m going to remain optimistic though , it’s only in demo form so perhaps we’ll see more work done to the steering, if not them it’s not bad as it is, just not as good as VR in my opinion

New Star GP is a fantastic game, but its visual aesthetic is closer to Horizon Chase than it is Virtua Racing.

I'm kinda done with the "new-retro-gaming" thing.
After trying a few games, it made me realize that I simply enjoy more playing the old games.
I mean, if the point is to revive what we felt back then, well... we might as well play the old games. lol
This game definitely has more content, but... 😞

true, most of them are crap but there are a few ones that are really awesome and better than those 90s games. BLAZING CHROME for instance, NINJA WARRIORS remake on switch, XYDONIA, MALDITA CASTILLA are my faves

Um how do you suggest most people play the old games with little fuss?

@@tarekwayne9193 Well, if you're serious, you can always use emulators.
Free, kinda easy to setup (except Retroach), and if you stick to 90s consoles/arcade, most can run on potato computers.
For those who have more money, there are also various solutions:
      - MisterFPGA
      - the Analogue consoles (hard to get)
      - the original consoles + Retrotink to make them work on modern TVs
      - etc.
The vast majority of people prefer emulators to save money, of course.

Thar bridge chicane is absolutely horrible game design at worst... there is no such chicane in Sega's Virtua Racing or Daytona USA even on Sega Saturn where most of the potential was lost thanks to Tom Kalinske pushing his 32X idea to profit his pockets instead of the Sega parent company which needed to transition to full next generation hardware back then especially with the stiff competition from 3DO, Sony and Nintendo.
Also btw I am a Ridge Racer master player and even that game would never have such a horrible chicane design... the idea of turns is that in real races they have signs ahead of time before the turn or the chicane has to be dealt with which reminds even the professional driver who's job is to memorize the track that here I have to start slowing down so I don't slam on the brakes and cause a disaster because in real racing those disasters do happen from the most minute error to possible part failure and it's worse because it means you're out of the race.
I noticed the A.I. drivers also didn't slow down and instead slammed into each other so that was a deliberate horrible game design because even the driver A.I. cannot negotiate with the chicane or do A.I. driver cheating like in all other cars minus the rival car in Ridge Racer or all the Need For Speed PS1 games and PS2 where E.A. were always sloppy with their rubber band A.I. cheating which violates the game physics the player obeys.
Other than that it does look ok but only because it is trying to copy Sega's Virtua Racing with triangle polygons instead of Quadrilaterals... maybe the PC is ok but that developer really needs to polish the game and make it run natively on Sony PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro models.

I've since spread it out. The reason I added it is because I chose to add a real scale golden gate bridge and the straight was too long
