  • Virginia based Super Stock drag racing legends “The Golliday Brothers” most recently known for winning many NHRA events campaigning a SS/C 1969 AMX named the “Wild Child” purchased this 1967 Chevelle SS396 new at Wagner Chevrolet in Martinsburg, WV and immediately prepared it for street racing as well as NHRA Stock Eliminator and Super Stock drag racing. The car was known all around the area from 1967 to 1970 as a holy terror on the dragstrip and also won many many big money street races. After selling the car, it had been presumed destroyed or its whereabouts were not known for many many years. The Chevelle was recently located on a farm used as a salvage yard parked on the back of a old car hauler for over 30 years.

I would like to set the record straight. I have first hand knowledge of this vehicle and the
person that owned it. when he was young he used to see this car sit on the main street of our town. It had tow hooks welded to the front frame that were hooked up to the tow bar to be
able to flat tow it to the track. Years later he found it in a salvage yard still with the same tow hooks hanging down. It had been painted black. He later raced with friends who had raced
with the Golliday Brothers when they had the Wild Child AMX. He has had the car for over
40 years. About 6 years in a garage and the rest sitting out. The car is as he found it over 40
    years ago.

Bench seat is lighter than buckets for racing, drum brakes have less drag, I'm surprised it's not a post sedan car as well. Rear seat was removed for racing, battery mounted in trunk with Holley fuel pump. Car has a nice solid trunk. Must have had 4:88s with 12 bolt, welded ladder bars...shocks are date-coded. An L-78 drivedrain can be located, even correct dated, people have even found original engines!

I've always been a GM guy and especially love Chevelles. In the past, I owned a 66 SS with a built 427 and a 72 Malibu with a built 400 small block (obviously not their original engines). Both were extensively street raced when I had them. I currently own a triple black 70 LS5 that's a nice weather weekender as well as a '74 Z28 who's original 350/T-10 were long gone when I got it. It now has a 427 small block and Richmond 4+1 along with a 9" Ford. Rear end gear varies by track conditions. I also own 7 "square body" GM trucks and would LOVE to ad that wedge truck to my collection!

My first car at 17yrs old was a 1967 chevelle SS with a 327 V8 & 4 speed Muncie trans with a 4.11 positive traction rear end. I don’t think any numbers were matching in the drivetrain on my car since I purchased it from two brothers who drag raced it in eastern VA before I purchased it in 1979. I was sitting stopped at a red light in 1984 when a girl hit me head on at a high rate of speed and totaled my chevelle by breaking the frame right in front of the drivers feet. I really had a lot of fun street racing the car the few years I owned it and won’t repeat here what I thought about the girl that hit me.

Well I'm the same age as that car and I can tell you for a fact, I'm not in the same shape as I was in 1970, and I can't account for all the events and wear and tear I've suffered over the years. I'm still all OEM, however, I have had some maintenance over the years. It's all perspective people, just be nice to see a plant in it, a splash of colour and an interior. Many "race" cars are put back into service after their career is over. This one has good bones.

Thanks for sharing your find with us. It's a shame that the car was mistreated though. You think when the car was made and who was a big part of that area. I sure hope that the owner will do something in restoration to bring this car back to life as the way it should be. I do agree with freebird that this car will have to take a lot of money to make her whole again.

Cars were cheap back then. Probably a $3500 car so after the new wore off, you bought another new one. These cars in the 1970s could be bought from $75-350 second hand. It wasnt until the 80s that they increased to $1500. Gas prices, embargo, (fake shortages) killed many of these gas hogs as well.

Way back when! All these great old cars have been raced yanked and the hell beat out of them but you know times have never been better for restoration parts. Not numbers matching? Fine build it like you want it and drive it like you stole it! That’s what’s happening with my roadrunners. Enjoy the thrill! Take the grands out for ice cream in them.

I have my grandma's 66 Chevelle 300 2dr sedan. Has the same red color interior as this 67. Was silver with 194 six cylinder and Powerglide. I've dropped a .040" over bored 427 and M-20 4 speed into it. Now it's faster than the non-power drum brakes can handle. I have all the parts to put big block springs, new bushings, ball joints etc in with disc brakes and power booster. Grandma would scold me for all this while she would be smiling at the same time. Plans are to repaint to the last color of stock 66 red and have grandma's name printed below the driver door window. I miss her but her car will live on.

She must have been loved for so many years. Many years of loving maintenance, repair, and upgrades must have been done by the owner with great care and love. She was an inspiration come true, a dream realised. Then one day, the owner fell ill or was injured. His heart must have broken into thousands of pieces when he knew he could no longer enjoy his beloved. With a tear in his eyes and horrific emotional pain, he had someone he trusted fully park her where he could see her but she be safe from harm. Months passed, and turned to years. The years turned into decades. But the caretaker and owner of the old car never let her go and still had all the intent to one day take her out and enjoy her at least once more. Thirty five years had passed and the caretaker and owner was now very old and very, very, sick. He sat up in his bed and swung his feet over on the floor and got his two crutches and struggled to stand up. He was determined to see his beloved again. His wife left him when he fell ill. His children abandoned him decades ago. His dog had even died that year. With all the strength he could gather he limped horribly to his once beautiful, prized, car. He could barely open the door and he sat behind the steering wheel once more. A smile came upon his face as he held the steering wheel. It was the first one in decades. He reached over and found the original owner's manual and sales receipt and his mind was flooded with beautiful memories of wonderful rides with his pride and joy, taking his wife on dates before they were married and polishing his beautiful new car. He puts the manual and receipt in his robe's pocket and limped horribly and slowly back to bed. Everyone had left the old sick man, everyone save his old object of pride, his car. He then comes up to his bed and falls back into it. He reaches into his pocket and grasps the manual and receipt and falls asleep with tears in his eyes. That night, he had a grand dream. A dream like he had not had in decades. He was young and healthy and was at the dealer lot picking out his new car once again. He got in it and took it for his first ride. The ride seemed much longer than the real one he had taken decades ago. But he loved the ride he was having in his dreams. He drove on for what seemed like thousands of miles and he kept driving into the sunset. Soon the darkness reached him. A darkness so dark the headlights could not penetrante it. But he was with his pride and joy and he continued forward as fast as the car could go. The engine grew quieter and quieter. But still he pressed forward. Soon, nothing but the wind could be heard, no engine sounds, no road noise. He reached over to the glove compartment and took out the owner's manual with a smile in his face and said. This is what I want to remember when I die. And so he did that night. He was found two weeks later with a beautiful peaceful smile in his eyes, still grasping the owner's manual and original sales receipt. He could have asked for no better a dream than being in with his beloved once more. He is still there in his dreams today.
Respect and love his car. It is now belongs to someone else.

I have restored 15 Chevelles through the years and this one throws up red flags.
Body tag has been removed and installed wrong. Missing a Chevelle emblem on the rear.
There are no stickers, except one. This would have been a heater delete car. Clutch pedal has way too much wear. Odometer rollers do not line up. No provenance (paper work) no history other than hearsay. Tow tabs do not make this a legend. I do not see a VIN plate on the drivers door frame.

I've restored 5 Chevelles of this era myself and this doesn't add up. Every SS I've ever seen has bucket seats and
a floor console where the shifter goes. This one has neither.
Also.... With that few miles on it (20,000) and it was only raced 3 years, (not driven on the streets) why the big rusted out area
behind the driver side rear wheel?? The last I heard they don't "salt" race tracks! And why would anyone tie-up a good
car hauling truck (since 1988) just to store this Chevelle on? And one more thing. When you showed the close up of the driver side door where the mirror used to be, there is evidence of the car having been painted red TWICE. There's two layers of red paint there alone. Sorry, but I'm calling this story BS.....things just don't add up!

@@joshuacampbell9990, The console and buckets were an option. Some one did take two rear lower control arm supports and put them on the rear bushing bolt. I agree, that at least should have had a RR air bag. I ran my 66 with one on the street with an open 12 bolt.

Yeah..about the tach location on the 67 models..I always considered that an odd spot to place it. covering up the blinker light and half the gas gauge...same goes for the "knee knocker" tach location for the 66 models..Never understood why they did not simply place the tach in the console where the clock was located, if the car had the optional buckets..

Everything wears with miles. Every moving part, all exposed interior surfaces, everything rattling and rubbing against metal...not to mention corrosion

    • @Bartonovich52
      @Bartonovich52 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      lobmin
      No
In fact... it’s the exact opposite.
A car with 20k miles sitting for the most part of 50 years has lots of age related deterioration. Rubber components get hard and brittle, bearings seize, and indeed, fluids deteriorate and absorb moisture, corrosion and rust is a greater issue with stale moist air and the growth of mold and mildew. This is why in aviation we use three methods of determining the condition of the aircraft (hours, cycles, and calendar time).
I’ll always take a car with miles matching age. My first car was a ten year old Buick with 40k miles on it. It didn’t make it to 100k before the engine was shot (lower end blow by... not worth fixing) and it was rusting through because it spent most of its time sitting.

    • @lobmin
      @lobmin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Bartonovich52 Yeah of course things deteriorate over time, "the worst thing you can do to a car is to never drive it".
But Andrew was only referring to miles and the drivetrain, calendar time was out of the equation

As a truck driver, I see old vehicles in pastures, yards etc. all the time in my travels. I'd love to save every one of them. There's a 66 or 67 Charger that's been setting in a driveway under a tree for 30 years about 2 miles from my house. I know people who've tried to buy it, but, they won't sell.

Hi Frank, I just bought this Car from my cousin who has owned it since 1973. I remember when he first got it, he painted a 70 Monte Carlo I owned in 74 and I saw it then. I casually asked him if he still had it a few months ago and he said he did. I convinced him to purchase the Car. I recently personally met and spoke with both of the Golliday brothers, and they are thrilled and willing to help us with bringing it back to its former racing livery. I have already accumulated many parts for this restoration.

I was young in 1973, gas stations closed and long lines at ones that were open and high prices! a big block anything was a gas guzzler,. so if u were to deep in payments u just small blocked the car till it was paid for and traded it in for what u could get on a gas saver. oh high insurance cost to. these cars were white elephants in the 1970s. now rich guys that can pay people to do a car and high parts cost and values done are through the roof. we played with these cars in the 80s when they were cool old junk. I use to run my 68 Camaro ss 4 speed, sold it and bought a 74 Camaro. these cars were our cheap toys. I traded for a 1967 mustang gta basket case all there and never picked it up screw it to much work. these cars that we paid $200 for and thrashed on main st, are now $50k restored trailer queens. I traded a 74 mustang mach 1 for my 68 ss, back then my want cars were a 77 or a 78 trans am t top or a 78 or 79 cutlass t top. I'm not doggin this chevelle, this car is a conversation piece, memories of good times passed. as memories fade that chevelle is fading away. people have these racers of decades past and with good intentions, never sell them and only when the car is to far gone to save they want a king's ransom for it. we had them in the 1980s now it's the rich guys and the car hoarders turn, probably not having as much fun as we did with then.

i live in the uk, but i am into classic uk fords, and anything american, i know a dealer who specialises in american cars, we get stuff like this all the time, missing parts no vin tags made up histories, the sad part is people pay silly money having cars shipped here, and they are worthless without its tags and both a last us title, and its export/import title they cannot be given logbooks and number plates.
but the saddest part is they get stripped and cut up for repair panels, from the moment they get here they are on borrowed time due to salt and damp, and thats the good ones.
being a us car fan i can honestly say they are best left stateside.
