I had a ‘70 Chevelle with a lowly 307. Impossible to find now because all the SS nuts gut them for parts. To me the ‘70 had the best lines of any car built by Chevy. To bad there isn’t a fiber glass kit car.
Some of the early Turbo 400 trans, had a saftey override in it, at 5,500rpm, even with it manually in 1st, it would force shift to 2nd. It hit REALLY hard. I had a homebuilt '69 Nova with a 396 and turbo 400 in high school. Won alot of races due to that shifting.

Since you're obviously a Chevelle fan, and, especially a fan of the 1970 model (as I am!), you should find a copy of the November/December 2018 issue of Vintage Truck Magazine. The cover truck is a cranberry red/white stripe 1970 El Camino SS. It's a highly optioned L-34/4 speed car/ truck. Just by being an El Camino SS makes it rare and interesting to me.
Me and a guy I know got a roller given to us he needed a doghouse for a wrecked 68 Malibu he bought we new where a gold 68 as el Camino had been sitting for years so we stopped to see if he'd sell the doghouse off it turned out to be his dad's car who had passed away in 81 he got it back from a shop missing the engine and trans he never found another 396 and four speed for it so it just sat on an old slab where a garage used to be until 2 years ago when we stopped he told us he wasn't willing to part it out and turned down a thousand for the doghouse but the longer we hung out talking to him I guess he decided he liked us because he told us before the night was over if we promised not to chop it up or part it out he would give it to us we went back and got it the next day the title was long since lost and was never switched out of his dad's name we stored it for a year and my buddy didn't want to put any time or money into it without having a title we ended up trading it for a 54 international 4x4 pickup to a good friend who paid for the lost title application to be filed by a lawyer and got a title for it he has since dumped a fortune in to it but body wise the car was solid after being soda blasted hes gonna have one sweet ride when he's done
Back when I was a teen in the 80s I remember a maroon 70 running around that had the 71-2 front sheetmetal. I thought it looked a little odd with the 70 rear bumper, I just figured it was wrecked and redone with the later parts and all repainted.
My Dad has a 1971 Chevelle SS 454 450 hp LS6 bought originally brand new from Nickey Chicago Chevrolet with the LS6 motor and M22 4 speed. The car is in storage and is low miles. And has all of the proper documentation. I’ve always wondered how rare the car is ?
guy letourneau The ‘71 & ‘72’s are definitely a step down from previous years, but I personally still love them & think they’re beautiful card. ‘73 is when they really started to get ugly in my opinion.

Notice the absence of cowl grilles. While that in itself doesn’t prove it to be an LS6 car, it is definitely another characteristic of a real functional cowl induction car.
whats differance between 71 and 72 chevelles,my buddy had a 71 chevelle with 350/270 hp engine,4:11 posi rear end and 4 speed, his was poop brown with gold ss stripes which was unusual it wasnt a ss chevelle no ss badging
The 71 had split parking lights, the 72 wasn't split. Interior, the 71 had all chrome knobs, the 72 had the stupid symbols on the knobs...musical note on radio, burning cig on the cigarette lighter, etc.
I had a 69 W30 while I was in the service ,had a friend do some work to it and made a mess of it .I was so pissed I gave the car away to another 442 guy .
i would have kept the 70 nose and rear it’s more like he prob wrapped it around a telephone pole and happened to have a 71 nose available. you can see the wires for the pigtail for the extra headlight. the L doesnt always mean super sport options ive seen a lot of canadian chevelles documented fully without it . the protecto plate is the only way to really tell with the 70
No...old drag racer trick. It keeps the motor from torque over when it revs. Soft motor mounts prevent excessive vibration but they cause the engine to rotate a little under torque. Guys in the day used chains and or turnbuckles to hold the engine in place so it puts any lost torque to the wheels. I remember my dad doing this kind of stuff. There were all kinds of tricks. He also used a folgers coffee can and braised copper tubing inside. He's the can full of dry ice to super cool the fuel. He also ran windshield wiper hose to the upper rear wheel wells. He'd fill the washer tank with bleach and use the washer pump to spray bleach over the rear tires for a dramatic burnout.
mindeloman I removed seeing some old article somewhere, they put em on at the dealer for early 60s big chevies that broke motor mounts. No doubt this one was an add on but the old ones were available at the parts counter.

Vin#,build sheet will not lie as well
what is the welded chain for?
Back when I was a teen in the 80s I remember a maroon 70 running around that had the 71-2 front sheetmetal.
I thought it looked a little odd with the 70 rear bumper, I just figured it was wrecked and redone with the later parts and all repainted.
My Dad has a 1971 Chevelle SS 454 450 hp LS6 bought originally brand new from Nickey Chicago Chevrolet with the LS6 motor and M22 4 speed. The car is in storage and is low miles. And has all of the proper documentation. I’ve always wondered how rare the car is ?
So my question is if one were to get a car like this, would one drive it as is or unmask the 70 model lurking beneath? It's a good looking car as is.
I hope the owner kept all the original parts he took off of the 1970.
man you got the best job .
Thank you. Yes I’m a very fortunate and thankful guy.
whats the diffrence from a 454 ls6 1970 chevelle, and a 454 1970 chevelle?
I can't understand why anyone would just park this car and let it go to shit. Why not restore it or sell it to someone who would restore it?
Happens all the time unfortunately.
those mickey Thompson slicks were the first run 80,s I have a old set, what taillights this have
Great car, I still would like you to explain these cars like you used to .
it is not a ls car
I wonder if that car has the 71 to 72 rear bumper?
Always thought the 71 was pretty homely
guy letourneau The ‘71 & ‘72’s are definitely a step down from previous years, but I personally still love them & think they’re beautiful card. ‘73 is when they really started to get ugly in my opinion.
@@2H2521 Pretty much everything car made in the US that era had gotten ugly by 73. There were a few that were luckily kept their old bodies through 72, but by 73 it was over.
Awesome car Neat story! Where’s the ‘71 these days?
I didn't know that any ls6 Chevelles had an automatic
Looks kind of like my 71. But the older wheels give it away.
i had a buddy with a 70 duster that had an insane 340 in it he had to chain down too! lol! after a little work he did to it, he could never stop breaking factory engine mounts for some reason so chain up that beast! a lot of work to perpetrate a fraud, smh, cheaters and weasels who screw other people over are losers, whether they win or not! I used to work with some lazy guys that always tried ducking out of ,or avoiding work, funniest thing to me was,it looked like it took alot more effort for them avoiding the tasks, as opposed to just doing the work in the 1st place! lmao! stupid is as stupid does.i don't get it. thanks again. ☆☆☆
Notice the absence of cowl grilles. While that in itself doesn’t prove it to be an LS6 car, it is definitely another characteristic of a real functional cowl induction car.
What's up with the chain welded to block
Fascinating!!!!!
You could buy a completely restored one for what it cost to do that one everything needs to be replaced
Found our Kansas City Broadcast Sheet glued to the inside of the passenger side front fender
What happened to the almost 10,000 70 Chevelles with an LS3? It's no big deal like a 66 L35 but just never seen an example.
Can i,have it ? I sold my 70 in 96 and now I'm too old to get another one unless you give me that one of course.,,, beautiful car
I Wish you could've gotten a shot of the rear bumper to show the taillights.
He did at the 8:05 mark
I think , his back story is half true , I’m not buying he had another cow tag over the original , thanks for sharing
My 71 had the column shift and factory deluxe buckets, no centre console same colour interior.
Disguised and lowered the value. A LOT!!! He most likely didn't care about that back then. Now he knows what those go for
but it is not a ls car
Sneaky down south boys.. love it.
whats differance between 71 and 72 chevelles,my buddy had a 71 chevelle with 350/270 hp engine,4:11 posi rear end and 4 speed, his was poop brown with gold ss stripes which was unusual it wasnt a ss chevelle no ss badging
The 71 had split parking lights, the 72 wasn't split. Interior, the 71 had all chrome knobs, the 72 had the stupid symbols on the knobs...musical note on radio, burning cig on the cigarette lighter, etc.
I had a 69 W30 while I was in the service ,had a friend do some work to it and made a mess of it .I was so pissed I gave the car away to another 442 guy .
shortcut 57 - ouch. That’s so angry you are almost completely calm. That’s how I get anyway.
i would have kept the 70 nose and rear it’s more like he prob wrapped it around a telephone pole and happened to have a 71 nose available. you can see the wires for the pigtail for the extra headlight. the L doesnt always mean super sport options ive seen a lot of canadian chevelles documented fully without it . the protecto plate is the only way to really tell with the 70
is the chain a factory installed item
No...old drag racer trick. It keeps the motor from torque over when it revs. Soft motor mounts prevent excessive vibration but they cause the engine to rotate a little under torque. Guys in the day used chains and or turnbuckles to hold the engine in place so it puts any lost torque to the wheels. I remember my dad doing this kind of stuff. There were all kinds of tricks. He also used a folgers coffee can and braised copper tubing inside. He's the can full of dry ice to super cool the fuel. He also ran windshield wiper hose to the upper rear wheel wells. He'd fill the washer tank with bleach and use the washer pump to spray bleach over the rear tires for a dramatic burnout.
mindeloman
I removed seeing some old article somewhere, they put em on at the dealer for early 60s big chevies that broke motor mounts.
No doubt this one was an add on but the old ones were available at the parts counter.
We had a 68 Impala that had engine cables to keep it from torquing over.
Great Storey!!!
Can anyone tell me how to find a 1970 SS elCamino LS6 4spd manufactured June 3, 1970? Chevy told me they couldn't find that info anywhere...
