  • Researchers have used the snow tracks of animals to estimate a species' distribution, but the results are often not conclusive. Now, scientists have discovered a way to gather specific data from snow by sampling eDNA from the tracks of elusive carnivores.

This method may revolutionize how threatened species, like the charismatic lynx, are studied and how their habitat is managed. Created during the 2018 IWFF Filmmaker Labs, this film highlights the importance of conservation through collaboration by bringing together the scientific minds of two distinct branches of the U.S. Forest Service.

the silence out in the bush in winter is deafening . you can hear sounds from miles away . I can't imagine what the animals with far more acute hearing pick up .

I've been a hunter all of my adult life and I've never seen a lynx (don't worry, I've no interest in shooting one, I'd just like to see it). They're such amazing looking cats and I bet one that was used to you would love some ear-scratches or perhaps access to a heating pad/woodstove hearth.
Never came across an ocelot either although I've read that they're in all 50 states.
Wolf packs are fun to watch especially if they're just hanging out. Frequently it turns into a kind of dog-park with the playing and chasing. Although photos and videos don't do them justice. Wolves are HUGE. I saw an Idaho wolf pack that was all black. My first thought was, "I'm never camping here."
Black wolves in the dark? No thank you :-)
