  • Sperm whales are only at the surface for about 15 or 20 minutes at a time, yet photographer Brian Skerry is able to capture beautiful moments of these giant undersea predators.

He experienced the rare opportunity to photograph a social gathering of six sperm whales near the eastern Caribbean island of Dominica. He witnessed fascinating behavior such as whales playfully biting each other, rolling around, and babysitting. This assignment made Skerry realize that sperm whales are complex animals that have identity and personality, and exhibit traits similar to human beings.

Like Albert Einstein wrote “...if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole live believing it is stupid.”
If we judge other animals on their ability to be human, we will continue to believe our species is the most intelligent animal.

    Absolutely amazing!
Actually, considering we think of ourselves as kings of the Earth and treat our environment, animals and fellow humans very poorly, maybe the term HUMANITY is slowly changing its meaning. With pollution, animal and workers' exploitation and all the other inequalities, humanity definitely doesn't have the same meaning as it is supposed to have.

I believe with all my heat that these are sentient and extremely intelligent creatures. How wonderful that they are willing to share just a small part of their lives with us. With one flick of their tail or gnashing of their teeth they could be rid of us pesky humans, but they welcome us with a gentle curiosity. All of us can do more to protect the ocean and the beautiful animals who live there. I know I will try harder to make a difference.

Gosh, I wish everyone thought about the ocean this way. I surely do, but there are a lot of people I know at school who don’t care. If I could make three wishes in my life, I would wish for success upon my favorite teachers, I’d wish for humans to be able to look at each other and not care about the color of their skin or what religion they follow or where they were born. Finally I’d wish for the planet to be saved and loved by all humans. The things we do to our planet are extremely destructive, and people don’t really seem to care or let alone notice at all. I’m glad Brian Skerry cares.

wow, guess I'm blessed. Where I live it's super easy to book a whale watching cruise & go out & watch them as they migrate, or even watch them from shore if lucky. I guess I've just always taken it for granted that anyone that lives near an ocean would have the same options. Wish you all the best in your quest!
If it's not that easy for you, I recommend going beyond the regular tourist trips when you do go out to see them. I did a full day tour to the edge of the continental shelf for "birdwatching" & the whales & dolphins we saw there were SO much better than the regular half day tours, since the half day tours the whales tend to get sick of people in boats watching them, whereas the further out one, the dolphins in particular REALLY wanted to play with the boat instead of just tolerating it. They were riding the bow waves & turning side on so they could make eye contact with me & the others that were watching them from about 1 metre away & I swear their drenching us with their blow holes was on purpose lol. The whales didn't get that close, but were happy to be quite near to us as they swam along, nothing spectacular with tales or breaching or anything, but clear view of the size & majesty of them (and kinda how ugly & warty humpback whales are too lol)
