I grew up in the woods, and we had the elusive lynx around us my whole upbringing. No-one ever saw it, we'd sometimes see tracks in the snow when out walking deep in the woods, but that's it. Then in my 20s I got two kittens. And lynx tracks in the snow started to appear around my house on a daily basis. I usually had a window open for my kittens to get in and out, so I was kinda worried. One day I got home, the two kittens had brought a big bird inside and feathers were littered all across the room. I assumed they found a dead bird, it was too big for them to catch, probably a juvenile blackbird(not yet fully black). Then, I noticed the kittens, who were about 6-7 months old, started leaving mice outside. And every morning the mice would be gone, and new lynx tracks would be seen around the place they would leave the mice. In the end I saw the lynx crossing the fields, and I took my cats and lifted them up so they'd get a look. It's hard to know what a cat is thinking, but they looked very comfortable and familiar with the lynx. It's the first time I ever saw a real lynx, and it didn't look too bothered about me being there at all. Maybe the lynx had lost her own kittens and was thus attracted to my kittens? They started mutually feeding each other? It's one of the most precious and weirdest experiences of my life, lynx has been one of my favourite animals since I was a kid.

He moved around the rabbit until the rabbit was directly between him and the camera man, and then chased the rabbit directly at the camera man. What a brilliant strategy!
I find it amazing actually, and it kinda proves a theory I have that canines weren't the only creatures ancient man bonded with through hunting. And this at least shows that wild felines are willing and able to hunt with humans. To me, what happens feels more like the feline had been eating for days and days, catching rabbits, and realized his hunting companion had never ate one time. and as such, chased a meal directly to him. I feel like the cat was trying to give the cameraman a meal, much in the same way normal house cats will bring their owners kills for a meal. my reasoning for this is the cat directly moved into the rabbits line of sight. these animals dont have binocular vision like we do, rabbits have vision like deer and elk n stuff, they have an extremely wide field of view, and the cat knows this. Wildlife camera operators go to amazing lengths to get the footage. There's a behind the scenes from Netflix's wildlife series that shows how they filmed it over 3 years.

@@charliebockover not natural so us humans are not part of nature yeah no you are right we are not animals we are something completly out of this world. it is natural it has been known for a long time that other species help each other so it benefits both i say this is excactlly what is happening in the video. lynx can not catch a few rabbits fast enough and he wants to save energy so it uses a human to corner a rabbit and the human gets his videos.
daddy stinkmeaner Lynx: Dude, you’ve been following me for a month now? What do you want? Sam: Just to get some video of you to bring back to my fellow humans? Would you like me to leave? Lynx: no you’re good, hope I’m not bothering you Sam: not at all, are you sure? Lynx: Yes. I’m going to take a nap and then we’ll grab some rabbit for dinner later tonight.
Even the Canadian Lynx was polite after stalking and catching that snowshoe rabbit by apologizing for that PG-13 violent film scene, offering to do another take! 😂 Sam the Canadian cameraman also was kind enough to apologize an edit out the previous days film footage that he captured of a gratuitous bunny rabbit sex-scene that would have offended parents w/children, while upping the film to an R-18 rating! 😂
And that's exactly what he did. Amazing because that lynx took the longest route around towards that rabbit, and you know he did it so that the rabbit would run toward the cameraman and then hesitate, giving the lynx a chance to grab him. Great stuff.
C.R. E. If you watch the video it's pretty clear that the cat used the camera man to trap the rabbit. It( the rabbit) sees the guy and turns right into it's(the cat's) path.
C.R. E. Why exactly are you arguing with me again? You seem to agree with my original post. Like I said, "cat used that guy to his advantage, very wise." Crawl back under your bridge, troll.
Perhaps the lynx is chasing rabbits towards the cameraman on purpose, so the rabbit will have to turn predictably to ovoid the man. Possibly giving the lynx an extra chance to gain ground on the rabbit.
Yep. And it worked! He caught that one. It's funny because he completely went around the rabbit, even to the point where he was not charging it from the back but from the side - which wouldn't make sense if the cameraman wasn't on the opposite side!
"even to the point where he was not charging it from the back but from the side - which wouldn't make sense": could also have been to stay down wind, so the rabbit wouldn't smell him. I do agree he was probably using the position of the cameraman in his favor.
What was happening was that Sam was a distraction. Normally rabbits(and similar small prey creatures) have very different reactions to humans compared to their natural predators. They'll keep an eye on you but they don't immediately bolt like they would with what they know is going to try to kill them. So, while the rabbits were focused on the loud and clumsy(relatively speaking) human, Max could stalk them more easily.
Story time: When I was really young my father found an abandoned kitten on the side of the road. He picked her up and brought her home. She got a bit bigger after a while, we were confused on how big she was for just a cat. We went to the vet and it turned out she was a lynx. Her and I were very close, she would cuddle me and love on me, we were that close. One day one of my dads friends left the door open and we never saw her again.
sorry to say but i bet she would’ve returned to you. something may have happened and she couldn’t return. but let’s just hope she wanted to move and start her own family. maybe one day she’ll show up with a litter of kittens, you’ll keep one and start all over again.
Beautiful story with a sad ending for you. But she heard the call of the wild and did was natural to her, you can be proud you saved the life of a beautiful animal and provided her with a foster family for a while. Our domestic cats have had millenia to get used to humans, can't expect the same behaviors from wild animals.
What a special story. She brought much joy to your life. Even though she left to be the wild cat she was meant to be, I bet she thought of you with fondness.
Don't worry. If she goes out and never return, she knew that she's ready for the wild life. Animals knew by instinct what they could take. Especially cats. She'll surely return to you at an unexpected time, at that time, you have to be ready to let her go again because she's probably only come to check on you. And she's a lynx. the Wild is strong in her. The nature called for her and she answered it. As people said, fledglings will surely fly away from the nest. I'm sure she loves you but her nature calling is strong. I'm sure she's fine out there.
In Northern Ontario, I got to see a lynx mother and her kittens crossing the road in front of our vehicle. It was incredible! She was calling them and had to go back and get the last one, because he was being stubborn 😄
That Mad Max decided to accept Sam's presence is interesting but this vid also provides insight into the patience and commitment required to make the remarkable vids of wildlife most of us take for granted. A sequence of less than a minute can take an experienced team months if not years to acquire. Their dedication is admirable and unless a vid goes viral (very rare) I doubt they make even minimum wage for all the hours they invest. Thanks to CBC for posting this.
KaptKan1 A person likes Sam wouldn't be doing what he does if he didn't enjoy it. I'm sure he prefers it to sitting behind a desk all day, working on an assembly line or helping rude customers in some service job, nevermind having to take crap from a grumpy boss and then driving back and forth through traffic each day. Myself, I can't take that much cold but Sam's young, healthy and used to it. He probably considers frozen snot not much more than an inconvenience.
Well myself I have managed to video kittens being born not many cats will allow that mother cats usually go hide to have their kittens in my case the mother really trusted me it is all about building a relationship with the animal
I'd imagine the lynx gave him several opportunities to try to sneak up on him if he had any ill will. He also didn't try to sneak up and take any of Max's kills or try to harass him in any way. When he never took any of those opportunities, it must have become apparent that he was just there watching. Perhaps then he decided that the company was nice, and clearly Sam, despite not moving, became a decent hunting partner because he made the rabbit lose it's lead to turn away from Sam in the chase. Very neat to watch the video but I'd love to have been there to see this relationship develop. Beautiful shot in the end.
Makes sense to me. I've seen domestic cats do similar... when they turn their back on someone but keep an ear locked onto them, for example. It's not a stretch to think that a bigger cat, with just as much need to be smart like that, would to the same.
The lynx led the camera guy as noise bait to cause the rabbits to shelter and disguise instead of fleeing while using camera's noise to mask its own movement. The lynx trained the camera man to use clumsy to feed it.
Yeah, who was that second cameraman? It wasn't just Sam the cat got used to, it was at least two people. Hmmm... theory: 2nd camera was the grizzled, experienced cameraman who isn't all that photogenic, so they made the story be about the young pretty boy cameraman.
Amazing! I think we never fully appreciate what actually goes into a few seconds of footage in a nature documentary. Thanks for sharing this 'behind the scenes' story.
I believe some of these very intelligent animals sometimes do become socialized to certain humans but I think most states in USA have laws against "keeping" or "harassing" these animals if you are a cat it is very dangerous to approach a human in the wild as many of the humans may be inclined to take a shot at you! (and they do take livestock and poultry)

Never think a cat doesn't see its prey. I've seen my cat walk straight past a rabbit and then turn and ambush from behind. I don't know if he did it to gain advantage or for the thrill but he even kept his head straight when he passed but I could see his eyes looking at bunny.
Jason Richardson sometimes cats pretend they don't see the mouse etc getting away so they can chase it a bit more and have more fun. Unless they're dumb (like my cat) they always know where the prey is exactly
Jason Richardson observing how my cat play with me. I noticed that when I throw her toy she pretends not caring about it, walking pass it. But with a swift move turns back to catch her toy. Or sometimes she hid somewhere and attack her toy. I think it's their way of hunting. They simply know how to play the game. They are a very smart pradator.
How amazing that the Lynx actually trusted the cameraman to get that close to him so often, especially when hunting & resting. Beautiful cats they are.
Lynx is an amazing creature. Saw one once when i was with my parents and uncle at a cabin far up in the mountains. (Norway). IT was far away, just staring at me. I think i was 10. I didnt want to stare back, because of the, losing a stare battle. Didnt want it to feel unsafe. It got a couple meters closer. But i wanted to take a good look at it, but when i lifted my head up. It ran away and hid. After that. Every fish i got. I put it on the snow quite far away from the cabin. Splashed some fish blood here and there. Saw nothing the first day. But on the second, i had put two fishes there. When i checked the second day. There were Lynx prints! I was so stoked. I continued fishing and putting it there. Then we saw bear prints aswell at that spot so i stopped. Didnt see any bears. Thank god.
I'm now convinced that it is not just the Canadians that are nice, but also the wildlife in Canada. There must be some kind of happiness field in that country.

Lynx thinking I can train this human
And that's exactly what he did. Amazing because that lynx took the longest route around towards that rabbit, and you know he did it so that the rabbit would run toward the cameraman and then hesitate, giving the lynx a chance to grab him. Great stuff.

Perhaps the lynx is chasing rabbits towards the cameraman on purpose, so the rabbit will have to turn predictably to ovoid the man. Possibly giving the lynx an extra chance to gain ground on the rabbit.
My exact thinking
Yep. And it worked! He caught that one.
It's funny because he completely went around the rabbit, even to the point where he was not charging it from the back but from the side - which wouldn't make sense if the cameraman wasn't on the opposite side!
Yes ! Thats why they said that the lynx realised Sam can be beneficial. :P
If the photographer is in the video, who is the unsung hero filming _him_ filming lynxes?
probably a drone
They always go out in pairs and just in case of an accident etc
Must have been Grizzly Adams, or Ben, maybe.

Story time:
When I was really young my father found an abandoned kitten on the side of the road.
That was impressive and sad too. After all those times together with u, she never coming back to you again...
sorry to say but i bet she would’ve returned to you. something may have happened and she couldn’t return. but let’s just hope she wanted to move and start her own family. maybe one day she’ll show up with a litter of kittens, you’ll keep one and start all over again.
Cat: "C'mon yeah? I'm hungry, bring that thing you're always dragging around. Make yourself useful."

That Mad Max decided to accept Sam's presence is interesting but this vid also provides insight into the patience and commitment required to make the remarkable vids of wildlife most of us take for granted. A sequence of less than a minute can take an experienced team months if not years to acquire. It must be an honor to be able to photograph such a magnificent animal in his own natural habitat. Wonderful job!

I agree. Just watching this is a thrill, I can't imagine actually being there.
I know Canadians are supposed to be friendly but this Canadian lynx takes it to the next level😂
BazilRat Yes and a non-domesticated cat has found their niche and is the best at what they do
The Lynx is more healthy than the average human mind...this is obvious
different animals have different behaubiours, so maybe this one just doesn't have a reason to do so
So basically, the cameraman became the Lynx's hunting dog.
Basically the cameraman became the Lynx's chef dropping off rabbits..
The lynx led the camera guy as noise bait to cause the rabbits to shelter and disguise instead of fleeing while using camera's noise to mask its own movement. The lynx trained the camera man to use clumsy to feed it.
Exactly! Or the cameraman just bought a shitload of rabbits...

Jason Richardson sometimes cats pretend they don't see the mouse etc getting away so they can chase it a bit more and have more fun. Unless they're dumb (like my cat) they always know where the prey is exactly
Wild cats hunt to fill their bellies, domestic cats hunt for sport.

Thank god.
