Commonly called a ‘dumbo’ octopus, this deep-sea cephalopod has lateral fins that resemble big ears. Little is known about the ghostly white Grimpoteuthis octopus's behavior, because it's rarely observed. Crew aboard the E/V Nautilus had an exciting encounter with the rare, ghostly white cephalopod. The Nautilus is surveying an unexplored area of Davidson Seamount, an inactive volcano. The rocky habitat hosts large coral forests, sponge fields, and abundant unidentified species.

Oh, it's beautiful! God's creation is extraordinary!
Dumbo's body resembles my boyfriend's.😁 rounded n fleshy
Thanks for this information 😊
I don't know why but when the crew is excited, I feel so happy for them.
R[E] vereene no, they annoying af
They might be biologists who love their job so much :) happy for them too
Look e v nautilus crew are always excited
Wait, am I the only one who was enjoying this video as much as the scientists? Couldn't help but exclaim out loud ^_^
I think it's just in our nature as people to share in the joy of others. They make me happy knowing that they're doing something that they love and they've still retained their capacity for engagement and wonder. Probably weren't looking for an answer, but there's one anyway. Have a good night! :)
I love listen to them scientist talking, its like a radio show but its narrating the deep sea
Roosfina Pangesti I would most definitely listen to a podcast made by them!
A scientist is an adult who has never lost his/her childlike sense of wonder and curiosity
Scientists look like children, like any of us, when they meet their "idols" !!! I do not know what was cooler to see: the "Dumbo", or the happiness of the scientists !!! Great video!!!
dots need connecting.....
They have a TH-cam channel and they’re ALWAYS like this.
@@BizzarreProductions where do I find that channel?
Jess Banas EV Nautilus
Scientists are curious like children)
Originally clicked on this thumbnail because of the octopus. Turns out what interested me more in the end though was the scientists' oddly casual banter. Like people visiting an aquarium for the first time or something.
The oddly educational banter
2:17 "Bye buddy, I hope you find your dad" LMAO 😁

I swear, Scientists are the most valuable and loveable peoples in this planet. Love you guys.
I love how the scientists are truly interested and excited about the creatures they see!!! I absolutely love their enthusiasm! The world needs more people like them, maybe then more people would care more about nature.
I love me a good cephalopod haha
We definitely agree with that! If you'd like to learn more about the dumbo octopus, read on here: on.natgeo.com/2z7G4CT
Who doesnt enjoy one? They are spectacular to watch.
it would be cool to be anything tho…..seems like humans are the species that struggles most with finding a purpose....
im grateful don't get me wrong.....im just messed up yo
@POINTTWOFIVEMOA
HAHAHAHHA
It really look like the octopus is flying with the wings flapping. Love it!
Lovely life, fliying in the ocean, no taxes, no job, no stress, no loud, just peace.
Even though, still being a happy life.
@ASMR Subliminals 🤭😆

@@loplop019 aren't they designed to live in such pressure though?
Its a real Takodachi 💜
Takodachi is already famous among V Tubers and now .. It's famous on National Geographic.
“I love me a good cephalopod” I have never felt more related to than ever
Ha thanks for not muting the excitement of the scientists. I love when nerds go wild.
Sooooo, this is one of our Takodachi in wild
Now that was very cool to see. I loved the reaction from the scientist as well. It's so neat how they get excited at seeing something rare and so lucky for us that they filmed it. :)
I absolutely loved every second of this video - the commentary MADE it, too! More videos like this, please!
That Dumbo Octopus is such a cute and beautiful creature! Thanks for posting,Nat Geo! What a great job to discover interesting rare creatures!
I love how excited the scientists were!! Go team! 💕
That "Goodbye, you're beautiful" just made me go "awwwww" •́ ‿ ,•̀
Still learning about octopus - had no idea there's so many different kinds! So cool, so smart!
There is almost nothing i love more than to hear people who are passionate about what they do get super excited about what it is theyre doing. It just makes me happy :)
Thank you guys. Glad I watched this one... The excitement in their voices... Wooowwww
i want a podcast of just these scientist reacting to things they discover
1:12 Owen Wilson, is that you?
Anyone else hear the Owen Wilson wow at 1:11
very cool
I was just going to post that! Im rolling!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! xD
Oh my god lmfaooooo
This is actually just one of Steve Zissou’s expeditions!
Ordinarily I'd say something deep and profound, but just seeing this peaceful creature taking his(?) time floating by..."aww! That's so cool!" It never ceases to amaze me just how much we still don't know about our planet, and videos like this proves we're still willing to learn. Thanks!
LOVE it, and I especially enjoyed the Elf reference at the end
heart heart heart
Thanks Nat Geo , cool video like it👍🍀
This video isn't Nat Geo it was made by EV Nautilus
I love the crew banter as much as the animals
Is there some place where all these videos of deep sea scientists' commentaries are?
Extremely fun hearing people's reactions rather than unrelated music playing in the background.
Prettier than the prettiest wedding gown....
"Bye buddy hope you find your dad" 😭💀
I love these nerdy scientists ❤️
Ina's late for her stream so I'm here instead
It's so cute and has all the character in the world lol
Oh I Love this Masterpiece. The Ears, the purple Dress….. wow♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
What an extraordinary and beautiful creature! Thank you for sharing this remarkable footage.
Thank you, excellent capture of this lovely creature! great day to you..
Just an amazing piece of footage- thanks for posting it (love the accompanying comments)! 🙏🏼💜🐙
Creepy and Beautiful at the same time.
The Dumbo is so adorable. But, the sound of these scientists are wayyyyy cuter. Sound much like the kids in a candy store!!!
I love hearing the observers
Thank you NG. Beautiful, graceful, rare.
This is the first time in my life seeing this creature..what amazing thing!😲
Thank you for this wonderful video! I am sharing it with my 6 year old daughter at the moment. Fabulous!!
I don't really like cephalopods
But that little guy was just beautiful
"so lovely, you're gonna be famous" lol cutie
this definitely is my new stress reliever...watching it feels like having a warm bath....
it's so majestic
Amazing
Oh i love Dumbo, he or she is just beautiful. Thank you for sharing with us.

Incredible footage of a rare animal.
I love cephalopods too.
How do you get this job? I want to get high and look for weird sea creatures; what sort of qualifications do I need?
A doctrine in music.
All you need to do is buy a submarine and sink to the bottom of the ocean. Only qualification needed is a few million dollars
Same! Need that info! ASAP lol
This would be a good acid trip
first we get the jobs...then we get the khakis.....then we get the chicks
Aww he is so cute 🥰
Scientists crews are actually the best
Beautiful!!
I love the scientific banter 10/10
I was impressed because the Dumbo octopus swam with its small wing-like fins flapping.😆
The way the scientists go from like really detailed talking to like awing and laughing about the words they say is so funny to me XD
I've been watching these clips for a while now and this needs to be a show. The scientists commentary over finding weird sea creatures.
Since when do I have to pay to watch videos from this channel??!!
Edit: Less than a minute later I don't have to. Get with it, TH-cam. You're drunk.
Beautiful octopus. Stunning.
One thing that's cuter is the scientists being happy!
That is the most incredible creature. It looks animated!
I love how it’s calmly drifting in the ocean while it slowly flaps it’s cute little ear things
It's beautiful
Even in the middle of the deep ocean there's a can of coke?
What a succesful company
Where did you see that?
I love your positive attitude!
the commentary is priceless
Thank you Nat Geo for sharing this wonderful dumbo octopus video.
Love this!!!!
That was AMAZING 😍.
Wonderful to see, and looks so much like Dumbo!!!✝️✝️✝️✝️

Breathtaking!!!
I love listening to their reactions! I get excited with them ☺️
I love your guys' videos. They make me happy! 😊
Omg, that's adorable.
Você é excepcional lindíssimo
I’m enjoying the commentary. This is definitely how I would be if I were a marine biologist!
Ina ina inaaaa
"Hope you find your dad."
WAH
Am I the only one imagining them as the Bing bang theory gang without the Sheldon? 😅😅
Dumbo got some fans xD
Whenever they get excited, it makes me so happy. It's so wholesome. •́ ‿ ,•̀
That is really cool
I can watch this forever
1:13 wAaOw
Always fascinated on this creature, lonely, patient, survivor, nothing we human can imagine👍🏽But wait whats that while taking the measure with green laser, there are a red thing fly by from top to bottom at that moment that I am interesting at, its fast and colorful😮
😍😍 unbelievable
Wowww
WOW, so cool. Wished it had turned around, once or twice, so we could see its face. Thanks Nat Geo! Keep these great videos coming. 😍😍
wonder why????? just shy or maybe afraid...perhaps the instruments were unpleasant if facing directly towards sub. Sarcasm says "dumbo is a fugitive and avoids facial recognition at all costs"
That is its face! Octopuses have their mouths (a beak!) on their underside, right in the middle of their arms.
@@BizzarreProductions Cool! It'd be cool to swim with them like Aguaman. I interacted with a stink bug earlier; not for long though...
i held a neon tetra captive ...i purchased at a Walmart and it lived for like 3 years, maybe longer. Anyways, we looked at each other everyday.
It wanted to flood the house. It wanted to swim further; and i wanted to swim with the neon tetra. Tell Walmart to find the other responsible parties and volunteers. Return them to their natural environment or construct a massive aquarium if necessary. It's inhumane, no?
Before click: what? Dumbo?
After clicked: oh yes. Dumbo!
