Agree, tbh every company has their ups and downs and Pixar is no exception. Sure, Disney did a lot of corporate meddling behind the scenes which did lend to the worst times for them and with a good chunk of the original people from Pixar’s old days gone, Pixar will never be the same again, but that doesn’t mean they are out of the race. Once enough time has passed and all of their problems are resolved they might be even better than the good old days.

When Pixar adopts the Spiderverse animation style or just something different with a story as good as something like Coco or Walle they’re are dominating every animated movie that year.

    • @Commenter839
      @Commenter839 ปีที่แล้ว +51

I don't think Pixar needs to adopt the Spiderverse style, imo it's not really a bad thing to have a certain niche in your art. Plus the Spiderverse style will stop feeling unique/interesting if everyone does it.
It's more that the quality of their stories is tanking. Yes, movies like Elemental, Soul, Turning Red and Luca are solid, but the last movie that held a candle to their golden age was Coco imo. In some ways I feel like the directors are getting too caught up in telling "personal stories" and not so much about well, an entertaining story. And that's not even getting into all the terrible sequels/spinoffs they keep pumping out. Maybe it's unfair to compare them to their golden era, but it's hard not to

    • @Bustermachine
      @Bustermachine ปีที่แล้ว +18

That honestly sounds like a bad idea. Adopting the Spiderverse style. Animation is a very nuanced medium and what works for Spiderverse is not necessarily going to work for a Pixar movie. People in general have very short term memories. They overemphasis or over value what happened recently instead of looking at the greater history. One huge bad thing that just happened will, in their minds, overshadow all the good stuff even if that good stuff happened for a longer period of time. The opposite is true too.
In the former's case, Elemental's dismal opening made people jump to the conclusions that Pixar had fallen off even though the larger body of Pixar's recent work was good. An example of the opposite also being true is how how Dreamworks released 2 good movies in 2022 (Bad Guys and Puss in Boots) and everyone jumped to the conclusion of Dreamworks having a comeback.
But a single good or bad movie isn't a trend. People need to stop acting like it is and coming to these outlandish conclusions.

Luca is honestly my favorite Pixar film. I like that it has kind of a lack of plot, it feels like you're a kid, just like the main characters. I love the studio ghibli-inspired pacing and perspective on the world. Wanting a Vespa and then being like "eh whatever imma go to school now!" just makes sense from the characters' perspective. I found Alberto's jealousy made sense, especially with his abandonment issues. I mean- he's been isolated for so long and who knows how long he hasn't had any family or friends around him, and then the one friend that he makes might get taken away.

I liked the movie more than I expected. I think Ember's relationship with her dad was the best part of the movie and they did such a good job building it up in the beginning. I think it would've been a more focused plot if it was just about her discovering what she really wanted to do. Despite what her dad might think of her. It also gets elevated by the fact her dad's dad basically disowned him for leaving and now he'd be put in the reversed role with Ember.
I liked the romance as well, but I feel like it was setup pretty haphazardly. The first mention of them possibly dating was when Wade's boss assumes they're a couple and they have the awkward "We're not a - It could never work." Which is also weird cause why would she assume they're a couple if inter-elemental relationships, especially between water and fire, are rare. Before this point, they seemed like they were barely friends, but now they have a romantic tension between them? Once they do start dating they make a good couple, but I just didn't like how they got there.
Also, I think Buzz Lightyear is more than just a generic Astronaut when he's not a toy or has Woody as a friend. The "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" cartoon worked really well with a world built around the character. He was like a meatheaded Super Man (I haven't watched the cartoon in a LONG time, so I might be remembering wrong). I remember him being very justice oriented, but also having a bit of an ego. Also, the cartoon had interesting designs for the different alien species and technology. It felt like a Disney version of The Star Wars Universe, which is weird because now they ACTUALLY own Star Wars and they couldn't make a more interesting Sci-Fi world for Lightyear?

I think the reason I love Luca so much even though it has one of the most basic and honestly predictable storyline is because the characters and the settings and the vibes make it feel so cozy and wholesome and sometimes that's really all you need in a movie, not everything always has to be super complicated (this video was amazing btw)

And since Disney owns Pixar, people just put a torch to it for safe measure.

I just want you guys to know that I recently saw Elemental in cinema. I was babysitting a little girl and expecting the film to be about as mediocre as I heard
But not only did it subvert my expectations, It got me super emotionally invested. Did I mention I kinda loved this movie. I care about Ember and Wade’s relationship, they are both so likeable and I was sheeting tears at the emotional moments be it sadness or joy.
I even have my explanation as to why the element city metaphor works (Atleast for me)

    Ngl I really liked Elemental
It's not something big with a huge story and plot. It's a simple love story and don't get me wrong Wade and Ember definitely work better as best friends given they give off a more goofy friend vibe then actual romantic partners. I like Embers arc of finding her own purpose and figuring out what she wants to do but is afraid it'll make her a bad daughter. I did get invested in their romance however despite them working better as friends, especially when they first touch eachother it was a sweet moment that made me like the movie considering I avoided watcing it since I was afraid it wasn't gonna turn out good to me but I was actually surpirsed to enjoy the film, it's nothing big and that's fine animated movies don't HAVE to be about something bigger

  • @Bustermachine

Elemental redeeming itself doesn't change that the marketing for the movie was borderline sabotage. It just means that the reason the movie struggled wasn't entirely due to merit.
Likewise, putting it up against an incredibly anticipated sequel to a breakout hit animated film was the height of Hubris thinking this is still the 00s where Shrek was the best anyone else could do. To modify a quote from one of the middling Pixar films.
Pixar - "Screening in a slow movie month? I don't need that to make money at the box office!"
"That was when you were young. And the only game in town. Now you're old, and everyone knows your tricks."
    Pixar - " . . . "
Pixar's reputation was built at a time when few studios could match them in raw visuals. They used those visuals to buy themselves the breathing room to tell slower and more thoughtful stories in animation. But they can't rely on that alone anymore.
They need better marketing that can sell the idea of a film on intrigue rather than the modern Hollywood tendency to just tell you what it is . . .
And they need to release at the right time for family film that lets everyone come together and take a load off. I'd recommend thanksgiving and Christmas slots in the future.

15:25 that actually sounds like a pretty cool ending! Another thing I wasn’t sure about was how Ember not only wanted to do the internship, but also stated that she wanted to travel the world…even though she never mentioned wanting to do the lather. Also, Wade just completely decided to just…go along with it?
There are two ways I’d “fix” that:
    1. Scrap the jokes and use time for Ember and Wade to learn more about the other elements. I mean, Clod mentioned an Earth festival, and I don’t think it would have been that bad of an idea for them to go! They could have also extended the WindBreaker’s game just a tiny bit to emphasize their culture a little more.
    2. Completely scrap the internship all together (Or at least the fact that it’s so far away). Ember was terrified about what her parents would think if she left the shop, but leaving the entire city? I think her parents would be a lot more concerned about that. Besides, it’d mean that in the case of a sequel, we wouldn’t get to see more of element city, which kinda sucks. In conclusion: have the internship be in-town

Their Marketing team was really bad on this one or they just didn’t believed in their own movie and didn’t promoted it enough. Like for the Puss in boots movie. People hyped it up but not the ads themselves. Disney and Pixar aren’t good rn with marketing tbh.
Illumination, even if their film aren’t always the best, they always find a way to make you see it. Their marketing team for the minions and the Mario movie was insane.
Same goes for Warner bros with the Barbie movie. This is such a random movie, but the trailer makes the movie look funny and makes you want to see the film even if you don’t like Barbie like I do. And this film was good btw.

To me it feels that recent Pixar movies like Luka, turning red, light year, and elemental feels so small scale. Compare to movies like monsters Inc, toy story, and Spider Verse.

Other than lightyear everyone has loved every movie they’ve released recently
I personally think lightyear is misunderstood

Me too. I admire the stand-alone effort attempt with a distinct almost photorealistic art style that perfectly complements the Sci-Fi films it's paying homage to.

People need to stop being too harsh on Pixar and Disney because if they do their going to miss a really good movie like Elemental and WISH even though WISH isn’t even out yet, but I think that movie will do really good in the box office.

Elementals did not actually do well in the box office. I have no doubt that the numbers are inflated by Disney themselves. I haven’t heard of a single person who has went to see it.

I personally really liked Elemental! It actually made me cry, unlike other pixar movies in recent years like Lightyear or Onward. Elemental is now my favorite pixar movie to come out in the 2020's. Plus, I'm a sucker for romance storys, so i couldnt dislike or hate the romance between Ember and Wade. In my opinion, their one of the cutest pixar couples in recent years. Due to them having differing personalities. I just love couples in media who are so different from each other yet they have such wonderful chemistry! The emotional moments of the movie with Ember and wades relationship were the best parts of the movie. Especially in the sequence where they go on a date in element city and the original song for the movie "Steal the show" plays, OMG, that song is legit amazing. The beats are so catchy. I love it! I actually didnt mind the repeatable jokes in the movie, because I liked ember and wade so much, i was more focused on them growing as characters rather than the jokes or humor of the movie. I actually would've preferred your ending May, the one we got was kinda unsatisfying like you said. I wanted to see more of ember and wade as a couple, but the movie immediately ended when ember steped on the boat. I was like "Thats it?". Im hoping pixar will want to do sequel to this movie, so then they can put together a more satisfying story than focusing on more characters to introduce and develop. I wouldnt mind if they add 1 or 2 more characters in a sequel, as long as they have more of a prominent role in the movie, unlike the little plant boy, claude. That little dude was on the poster and only got a few scenes. Same thing with Gale, the cloud. The only thing i disliked about the movie was the ending. Other than that. I think this movie feels more like classic pixar than other movies like Lightyear or Onward. Since it has such great main characters. Im probably wrong though 😅

Yeah I agree and thought Elementals was a great movie for 2023. The hate is really unwarranted and like Awsomeay said alot of people switched sides when it started doing g good so it's really a lot people just saying it's bad to get attention. The ending could have definetly been better but for now let's atleast hope the make a second one and from the rebound at box office and suppose super high watch time on densely plus I think it will happen eventually. Anyways elemental wad a great movie and I agree with you completely, stay safe :)
