When Dav Pilkey was young, he didn't listen to people often and would make comic books during school. His teacher would aggressively disapprove and yell at Dav telling him he couldn't make a living off of stupid stories. Fortunately, Dav wasn't a very good listener
My favorite part about the Peanuts Movie is that when Charlie Brown finds out that he didn’t actually get 100, he tells the truth instead of lying like other protagonists.
I KNOW RIGHT?? So many protagonists in movies nowadays are just straight up liars or selfish, I know it makes for an easy moral at the end of the movie but it’s refreshing to see a genuinely honest character every now and then
If a hug was converted into a movie, that’s what the Peanuts Movie is. It’s so cozy and satisfying to watch, it feels organic and cute. Meanwhile Captain Underpants is a homage to the books it was originally based on, celebrating it’s humorous story and showing you the imagination of two fourth grade buddies in their own silly way. These movies meant a lot to me when I saw them and I’m happy they got the fair treatment they deserve.
7:55 the highlight of 3D taking on a 2D art style is the ease of making angles look better that otherwise would be super difficult to look right in a drawing
I think I heard someone would say a 2025 captain underpants sequel would be in production well in 2025 I’m not sure about this information I just heard it from somewhere.
@@imgonnaputsomedirtinureyedabs well at least it’s still on netflix so it’s not lost to time, i’m kinda disappointed we won’t get any more episodes though
9:17 Not only that, they also made the characters feel like REAL KIDS, Especially Charlie Brown. I think most 10 to 11 year old boys, when watching this film, will be able to relate to him, I mean I definitely did!
Yes, I watched both movies and they pretty fit well in. CGI. I remember watching the Peanuts movie in theatres when it came out, but I only watched the Captain Underpants movie at home. To me, the Captain Underpants movie would be the first time one of Dav Pilkey’s characters would come to life (I also find it to be an improvement over The Boss Baby in terms of release order and was a good way to end the 20th Century Fox era of DreamWorks Animation).
When I heard Captain Underpants was getting a movie, I was OVER ecstatic. Dav Pilkey is without a doubt the best and most nostalgic children's book writer ever since Dr. Seuss. And even after re-watching the movie several times, I still can't help but smile at it. Thanks to Dav Pilkey for being the pinnacle of everyone's childhood 👍
14:18 I love the tiny detail of Harold pouring slightly more grape juice in one cup, and giving the other to George, it just shows the kind of friends they are :)
@@Parkigion That’s in development, but you know what else we can’t wait to see one day? Graphic novels (or Scholastic books in that style) and film adaptations previously mentioned at the beginning of the whole franchise that are based on comics made by characters (George and Harold) at Tree House Comix Inc.! I would go with Dog Man, but that’s already been turned into a full-fledged series as of the post-2000s since the long-awaited Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy Tinkletrousers!)
As someone who’s read The Bad Guys and Captain Underpants books, their animated adaptations are amazing and definitely capture the energy and heart of the original books.
Something that I only recently realized but appreciate a lot about the Captain Underpants Movie is how all the 4th Wall breaks are set up. They aren’t set up like normal meta jokes like winking at the camera, but rather they seem to be set up as if George and Harold are *imagining* their life as a movie. From them singing the DreamWorks theme at the start, to their fake credit sequence, to the “Flip-O-Rama” scene, it all feels like what a kid would do when they’re imagining their own life as a feature film. They think of what studio they’d want to work with, they think of the action sequences, they think of who would help with the movie. It doesn’t only add another layer of relatability, but it also furthers amplifies the authenticity of the characters being goofy friends wanting to have fun with their lives.
The original books do the same thing as visual and writing gags, so it makes sense for George and Harold to be narrating bits of the movie since there is no narrative page text in it.

I remembered that time when I watched Ponyo in a movie theater with my family and it was a ghost town. I’m glad that I’m not the only one who knows this classic.
I like how you mentioned the mix between 3D and 2D with movies like Spider Man: Into the Spider-verse and The Mitchell's VS The Machines. It adds more expression to the characters and story. I also loved the mother 3 reference at 15:16. Glad to see more people see Sigesato Itoi's Creations being noticed :D
Man... I remember I saw Captain Underpants in the theaters. That movie was a blast to go through. Still one of my favorite DreamWorks movies of the 2010's
May, I just want to say that these two movies are the two movies that changed my childhood. I remember writing a "rip-off" off of Captain Underpants because I loved the franchise that much as a kid. The Peanuts are soooo wholesome!!!! The Peanuts really fit my personality too, cute and wholesome. Thanks for making a video on these 2 movies May!
6:38 A perfect example of this is the Smiling Friends episode where the characters were literally stuck at an airport the entire time and nothing happens but it's still fun to watch.
the peanuts movie made me cry when it came out. My childhood was charlie brown and my brain was so f’ing happy when it was announced that it gave me happy tears. the captain underpants movie was also really good!
As a kid, I absolutely loved the Cap. Underpants books, and I feel like the movie really did justice the overall experience of reading of of Dav Pilkey’s works. My family and I always enjoy the old Peanuts TV series, so we felt very stoked about that adaptation, too.
I remember seeing the Peanuts movie in theaters with my mom, we both loved it. It felt like if someone made a new Peanuts cartoon, like the Great Pumpkin one but 3d.
OH MY GOD “BEST FRIENDS” AND THE THEME SONG. BRO YOU JUST CAUSED FLASHBACK IN MY BRAIN! I watched this movie soon after it came out and after watching it with my brother, we decided to play the songs and I remember putting it on repeat and we were hard jamming and dancing on the bed. That’s such a fond memory I should look back to more. Me and my bro grew up reading Captain Underpants and those songs and this movie was such a huge moment in our young lives
One thing I love about the Captain Underpants movie is that it's actually pretty bad at adapting the story from the books. It takes plot beats from books 1, 2, and 4, as well as just making things up, and yet despite all of that, it so perfectly captures what makes the stories great and is an incredibly charming and nostalgic watch. It's my defining evidence that an adaptation doesn't need to copy a story beat-for-beat to be great. This is a mish-mash of stories from across the books, but it still holds up as an incredible adaptation for how perfectly it captures the heart of the books.
Adapting from the books holds it back as just a remake honestly. That’s what made the diary of a wimpy kid live action movies better than the animated ones.
Exactly! I hated it the first time I saw it (I was 12), because the story was so different, but now that I'm older, I've come to fully appreciate the other ways in which it's faithful to the source material. It's clear the people working on the film had a lot of respect for the novels. The Netflix series also does a decent job of adapting the general style of the books imo, but takes it in a slightly different direction.
The book adaptations of movies are definitely amazing. I have enjoyed them a lot. I just recently read the Bad Guys book after watching the movie and it was just as good as I thought it was. Of course, not all are winners but there are so many good ones out there
The one thing I love about the Charlie Brown movie is just how down to earth it is, and how it’s such a feel good movie and really feels like the finally happy ending to the Charlie Brown saga ^w^
As someone who read and adored the entire Captain Underpants book series before seeing the movie, I was absolutely delighted by how the movie managed to capture the energy of the books and combine elements of the first four books basically seamlessly and reference so many things from the books
I think they adapted The Pinocchio 1940 movie pretty well from the original and gruesome story from the comics which Disney did a great job turning something so dark into something so heart warming…
@@jmachero5852 Yep. It kept the same dark elements and the traditional moments from the original Collodi novel. Let's see... - Pinocchio is a much more brash and rowdy character - He burns his legs on a fireplace - He kills the Cricket with a mallet - The Fairy summons 4 coffin-bearing rabbits due to Pinocchio's carelessness - Lampwick is originally named Candlewick - The "Whale" is much closer to its original counterpart, which is not really a whale but a giant sea monster called The Terrible Dogfish.
@@TheLazyFusspot_3428 Yeah, I get that the film is supposed to be much different than the Disney version but I find it unexpected that in the end of the del toro version is that Pinocchio DIDN’T become a real boy in the end. I wonder if that’s what happened in the original book. Not that I really know much of the original book.
@@jmachero5852 No, in the novel Pinocchio did become a real boy in the end. He shed his immortal wooden body and took on a fleshy mortal form, but they kept the lifeless puppet in the corner of their house. I think I like the del Toro version better; it shows that, on the inside, Pinocchio is and always has been as real a boy as any boy can hope to be, and he doesn't need to physically change who or what he is in order to be thought of as such. But of course, Mr. Del Toro's intent when he made it was to send a message that it's better to accept people for who they are, flaws and all, than to try and mold them to force them to fit into a pre-established system, like the military camp does, for example. The intended effect of the original novel was different, Mr. Collodi lived in an Italy plagued by times of crisis and poverty, and all he really wanted with the story was to teach children that those who disobey their parents and don't work to earn their keep gain nothing but suffering. It's a very melancholic tale, even with Pinocchio getting what he wanted in the end, as even though he is now a "real boy", a model Italian citizen, his family is still heavily impoverished, and he still had his childhood essentially taken away from him, as he still lives in this meager and moribund state, toiling away in physical labor even as a young lad to keep him and his father from starving to death in an environment where there isn't really a lot to go around.
i love reading graphic novels, and watching these kind of 3D animated movies makes it feel like im reading one of them. the animation style of the peanuts movie literally owns my heart its so cute its like 3d but 2d i dont know why but its the best
I can’t thank you enough for mentioning The Peanuts Movie, it’s an underrated gem and I remember watching it in theaters when it came out, it was an amazing experience I’ll never forget.
These movies are literally my favorite movies ever. I watch them every year on my birthday because they’re so dang good!! I love the visuals and the characters! And how the plot isn’t too far off from the original, adding to it even! It’s a breath or fresh air
The Peanuts Movie was one of my childhood favorites. I remember watching this film when it first released in my country and I felt my childhood come together. I watched the shorts on yt growing up and they really inspired me to get into animation. It’s honestly my favorite film and I always enjoy rewatching it whenever I can.
My fave thing about the Captain Underpants movie is how accurately it represents how it feels to be a student (other than the Captain Underpants coming to life stuff), same with Charlie Brown with, well, being a kid
I watched these two movies and I can relate that peanuts is a comfort movie. It's so wholesome and has so much fluff into it. For the Captain Underpants movie it's like a world where as child would see it, and I bet if you would watch this again it would make you feel like a kid again. The flip-o-rama (sorry if I didn't spell that corectly) is honestly my favorite especially if you read the books. Also Professor Poopy Pants THE BEST NAME FOR A VILLAN
As one of the few both Riordan and Pilkey fans, I just realized that if he exists somewhere in the Percy Jackson universe, he's probablyba half-blood, and I love that as a concept.
Both of these movies are some of my top ten favorites!! Reading Captain Underpants as a kid was so cool and the fact that the Peanuts character creator comes from my state makes it 10x better :)
When I heard that they were doing Captain Underpants, I was VERY EXCITED! I had basically read every Captain Underpants book and always wondered; would they ever make a movie? And now that the movie exists, it’s safe to say that it’s a very great, hilarious movie by our Supreme Master: DreamWorks animation studios, SKG! It stayed true to the nature of the books and maybe if DW makes another Dav Pilkey adaptation, like DogMan. It’ll be just as good
( I know you probably won’t read this but ) This is an amazing video you put a lot of effort into talking about movies, and the way you make them just makes me laugh I love these kinds of videos they keep me entertained.
I agree with this whole video! Like The Peanuts movie has its own thing and doesn’t force you to like anything like many shows do! Also like Captain Underpants movie literally made me get into comic books! ALSO! I ADORE UR HOW U CHANGE UR DRAWINGS SO IT CAN LOOK LIKE THE MOVIE U ARE REVIEWING IS SUCH A NICE TOUCH! 💕✨💃🕺
These movies are some of my favorites. Well, I actually haven’t watched Peanuts movie, but I’ve seen a little bit of it on Nickelodeon. But I’ve always loved Captain Underpants movie! I hope there will be more movies like these.
Love to finally get a video talking about two movies i adore, especially the peanuts movie, when i watched it as a kid in the cinema, in the middle of my huge Peanuts phase, it convinced me to take up studies in animation and work in the industry. That movie is my everything.
I agree with you thinking these are the best adaptations in the recent years, because even though I've only seen a few things about the Peanuts before, and I've never read the CU comics, I still ADORED the movies, proving that even people who haven't really gotten in touch with the source material can still fall in love with them and enjoy them. Heck, I've thought of actually buying the Captain Underpants series several times! Great video.
Another Dav Pilky series, Dog Man, is actually really good too. Its aware that it’s making potty humor and it embraces its silliness, and it can also have really heartfelt moments, especially with Petey’s development.
I haven’t watched all of the video yet…. But I’m so glad that you made a video on these movies. I’m a huge Peanuts fan, and have loved this movie for ages. And the captain underpants movie was also one of my favourites :) Edit: I watched it and you made amazing points here, I hope more people will watch these movies because of you :)
I grew up reading Captain Underpants and it was one of the things that got me into art. Dav Pilkey’s story is super inspiring and shows that with enough time and effort you can achieve something even if everyone around you says otherwise.

Captain Underpants is also one of the many contributing factors for my love of comics & just animation thanks to the Netflix series a year after the movie
Also Professor Poppy Pants 1st name is pippy which I love I can't tell you why
man, I remember watching these movies when they first came out and loved them. I should really re-watch these--
I'm so happy you refrenced Mother 3 at 15:15! As a Mother fan i really appreciate it.

I genuinely thought it was, those vibes are so strong
I remembered that time when I watched Ponyo in a movie theater with my family and it was a ghost town. I’m glad that I’m not the only one who knows this classic.
haha expect a full video on that movie near this summer :)
I’m so glad captain underpants is getting recognized I wish it got more attention before cuz it’s my favorite movie in my opinion

“That’s just Charlie Brown just Charlie browning”😂😂😂😂😂
I swear to GOD the captain underpants theme song hits harder then any other movie outro theme I’ve ever heard!
Whats that rip off
6:38 A perfect example of this is the Smiling Friends episode where the characters were literally stuck at an airport the entire time and nothing happens but it's still fun to watch.
the peanuts movie made me cry when it came out. My childhood was charlie brown and my brain was so f’ing happy when it was announced that it gave me happy tears. the captain underpants movie was also really good!
Same, I completely agree with you!
@@Inhuman1105 thank you!

One thing i love with the captain underpants movie is that they made the glasses on some characters behave like eyelids or eyebrows
As a kid, I absolutely loved the Cap. Underpants books, and I feel like the movie really did justice the overall experience of reading of of Dav Pilkey’s works. My family and I always enjoy the old Peanuts TV series, so we felt very stoked about that adaptation, too.
17:44 LMAO 😭 don't worry May I love your cut off humour 😼🫶

"I don't know if the director had gunpoint at them,"
*That is some interesting thoughts there*
I remember seeing the Peanuts movie in theaters with my mom, we both loved it.
I only know two times where kids sounded like they weren’t acting in a tv show/movie. That’s bluet and peanuts
My favorite part of captain underpants was when captain underpants said "its captaining time" and captained all over the place
Yeah, what about gullimore del toro version?
@@jmachero5852 Yep. It kept the same dark elements and the traditional moments from the original Collodi novel. Let's see...
- Pinocchio is a much more brash and rowdy character
- He burns his legs on a fireplace
- He kills the Cricket with a mallet
- The Fairy summons 4 coffin-bearing rabbits due to Pinocchio's carelessness
- Lampwick is originally named Candlewick
- The "Whale" is much closer to its original counterpart, which is not really a whale but a giant sea monster called The Terrible Dogfish.

3:21 BRO ONE OF THE KIDS ARE CHOLE FROM “DOG WITH A BLOG!!!”👏👏👏👏
I think the cameos of the villains in the tree house and the "everything but fabric softener store" cameo shows how mutch they love the audience!
I legit loved both of these movies. They nailed the feeling of their respective book counterparts.
I wasn’t even gonna click on this video until I heard you name drop Ponyo. In my opinion second best movie ever. Way too underrated.
As one of the few both Riordan and Pilkey fans, I just realized that if he exists somewhere in the Percy Jackson universe, he's probablyba half-blood, and I love that as a concept.
These two movies are literally my favorite movies ever.
It’ll be just as good
If I’m not mistaken, some of the background music used is from Miitopia- yes? I’m at 10:21 and I hear the Neksdor sound town theme
I love the story of Dave, man. It’s just so inspirational.
I like how we get some nice decently sized videos, then out of nowhere a masterpiece drops out of nowhere!
( I know you probably won’t read this but ) This is an amazing video you put a lot of effort into talking about movies, and the way you make them just makes me laugh I love these kinds of videos they keep me entertained.
i read it and i really appreciate it :)
Honestly, I feel like 2023 can be a good year for animation. Fingers crossed
Oh my word, I was obsessed with the Peanuts movie when it released!! I got my mom to drive me to Target the day it released so I could get the DVD.
but the captain underpants theme being sung by weird al just FITS. they're both goofy lil' guys
I could never say anything bad about the Peanuts movie. I have so much nostalgia with it, I watched it so many times at my grandma’s house.

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs is a cinematic masterpiece
Truly a certified hood classic.
I haven’t watched all of the video yet…. But I’m so glad that you made a video on these movies. I’m a huge Peanuts fan, and have loved this movie for ages. And the captain underpants movie was also one of my favourites :)

I grew up reading Captain Underpants and it was one of the things that got me into art. Dav Pilkey’s story is super inspiring and shows that with enough time and effort you can achieve something even if everyone around you says otherwise.
