This brought back memories, when i was a kid building 2 stroke dirt bike engines i didnt have a dial mic. I used a machinists strait bar layed it across the cylinder with the head off (most cylinders were bolted to the block separately, and the head bolted to cyl) then used a feeler guage to get timing, took longer but made do with what i had. Excellent guage holder you made, makes timming so much easier. Thanks for the info.😊
That's awesome, I really want to get into more machinist measuring tools but they get pricey quick :) When I went looking for a timing gauge I think motionpro wanted some $200 haha. I saw an old forum post with a write up on the DIY solution but all the picture links were broken and had to give it a shot.
Excellent video. If you ever need to remove the porcelain from a plug again a 5/8” bimetal hole saw bit in a drill (with the center pilot bit removed) is quick and easy. Place it over the porcelain and in about 10 seconds of drilling, it pulls out really clean. Great for plug chops.
I made something similar, but I couldn't find my dial gauge so I used a sparkplug, 8mm bolt (thread cut off), and a rubber grommet, it's a neat fit and slides with grease. The bike I made it for has a 4.5mm BTDC timing position so I made a simple stepped gauge. The good thing is that when TDC is reached it remembers the position because of its stiffness.

Super cool content man - off to binge your other videos now. Can I humbly suggest a grub screw to stop the dial moving in the fabricated holder - I know it's an interference fit but when you're dealing with '000's, every little bit of stability helps. Going to make this for SURE!
i’ve learned a lot from your channel man your so underrated. but i just bought a 01 yz80 and i’m gonna get a gpi racing radiator because the oem one is kinda scuffed up hopefully it should lower temps it does say it has 40% more capacity you think that would be a good route to go other than getting oem? also after that i was planing on getting a top end kit but the cylinder don’t have any deep scars but there’s some spots where it could be better and a little white discoloration but it doesn’t look like nothing to major from my knowledge but i was looking to get a NICHE cylinder with a weirdo top end and i know you have bought one of those cylinders before is it good quality? would you recommend it what’s your thoughts? thanks.
Thank you! I'm always a fan of more cooling if you're running in hot weather, in the colder areas it can be a problem at times. I'm never going to buy a niche kit again. The quality was about right for the price and the head orings melted on mine. Send your cylinder to get replated, far better option in my opinion.
My dad had tons of these in his tool box spark plug housing. How much was your micro gauge? Did it come with battery? I shouldn't of sold mine ugh. Dude did this work????? This is awesome video very clever 👏
The dial indicator was about $17 from harbor freight, it's all analog so no battery in there. Worked well and I've used it on a few engines now. Thanks, not an original idea but it worked a treat!
well the simpple mans way of doing that is just looking at the left of the pickud you can see 2 stripes one on the stator plate and the other on the case and just line those up

Can I use Mighty Putty as filler?
Never used it but if it hardens up decent enough to drill it should work
Yz85 needs to be timed ???
It was already within spec, I wanted to make sure due to other issues I was running into.
Is the yz 125 the same.

Depending on the year I think yz125s are .48mm or .019in BTDC from factory, should be able to find it in an online manual.
Will this work for 2000 yz80
Not sure what the timing degree is on the yz80 but the tool will work on any engine with enough clearance around the plug hole.
