Hey Nicole, Cate here. I invaded your space downtown Sidney last week. I wanted to say how pleased I was to meet you and himself. I had watched this vid a couple of weeks back and it rekindled my fondness for the Einstein coat. And voila, I am working on the sleeves now and excited to add this to my fall (and sometimes winter) wardrobe! Thanks for the inspiration.
I am so happy I found you recently! You are a lovely bright spot in my Knitting day ❤️. Thank you for all you do to bring joy to so many who don’t have contact with a Knitting friend in person. I love your humor, keep it up! Laura
Okay, okay, okay Nicole! I surrender! You've opened my eyes to the versatility of garter stitch! The no roll edges was new information to me despite how long I've been knitting. Thanks for another informative and entertaining video!
My first knitted item was a pair of super simple slippers - Garter stitch foot with 1X1 ribbed toes, drawn up at the toe and stitched up the top and at the heel.
I saw this episode about 2 weeks ago with the next cardigan I'm planning on making for my son. Id never heard of Sally Melville before. I despaired of finding the her books, even my library didn't have them . Then I went to the Textile Center garage sale in Minneapolis yesterday and found all 3 books for $3! I'm super excited!!!!
😊i am a garter stitch junkie...you nailed this video! Love it. Have all EZ books and Sally Neville...she is definitely a favorite of mine. Anyways, such a fun video! Thanks❤
Wow. I always though garter stitch was for beginners, but you convinced me!😮 Thanks for sharing those beautiful patterns and reminding me of the squishy factor!
I love everything about your videos. You are so cute. I'm a 65 year old grandma many times over, knitting since age 6. I appreciate all the work you put into your videos.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have taught new knitters with garments from Sally's The Knit Stitch. I've made four Einsteins. Rambling Rows is another great garter blanket. Thank you for reminding me of some wonderful knitting memories. 😊
I didn’t like garter in my beginning knitting adventure but I absolutely love it now. I am currently making the sweet shop blanket which uses scraps in garter stitch
Twenty years ago I really hated garter. It just seemed so boring, and almost lazy. But, more recently, I have been changing my mind. I see SO MANY beautiful, squishy knits that use garter. So, thanks for this!
As you were talking about the modular mitered square tie you did for your husband, I used that same basic technique for shaping the sleeves on a stash busting sweater I made a while back - worked on it while on a cruise that also had a group that met called the Knitters and Knatters.
Looking at the intro I thought you might talk about guerilla knitting as well. Great that you show that crazy -yarn exploding- side as well I bet you'll tell me greatness about garter stitch in the rest of the video 🤗
Ok, you win. Next cast on I will use garter stitch. I hope it does not offend you if I tell you that in Spanish they call it ‘punto bobo’ = silly/simpleton stitch. But as Maths teaches us the simplest solution is often the most elegant and the one that tends to be true… ♥️ ( I am not Spanish, I just speak it). Thanks again for a fab video. Simonetta
With your grey shawl at the end, wear it so that the middle is at the front like a bandana, then wrap the sides around your neck back to the front and hold them together in place with a brooch or a shawl pin. Personally i think its the best way with a crescent and it never falls off.
My first project was actually two garter stitch rectangles that I seamed (mattress stitch), leaving a thumb hole, to make fingerless mitts. It was so satisfying! Basically, dishcloths in different yarn and then seamed. But within three weeks, I was wearing a project I knit! Love Elizabeth Zimmerman's Baby Surprise Sweater and truly love the Sally Melville books! I made my daughter the fringed poncho that she wore for three or four years with so much joy!
I'll have to check out that mosaic video...mosaic knitting might be my favourite. Also, I went right over to purchase the pattern for the shawl (Waiting for Rain?) I had some variegated DK yarn in red/grey/black....and I thought a garter pattern would really compliment the variegation beautifully...and it did! I knitted the Hyla. It's garter stitch with 4 chunky cables on the front. I modified the cuffs and bottom to be icord. Otherwise, i knit it to pattern. The underarms were a bit puzzling, but the designer was open to my questions. It resulted in a beautiful squishy comfy sweater. I think mine is the first one you see in the project pages, if you'd like to take a look 😊.
Thank you for this video. I have always liked the look of garter stitch for some reason, but I like looking for patterns that incorporate it and have some style to it as well. I fine it amazing what designers can do with some garter in a garment. Thank you for talking about Sally Melville and some of her designs. They sound spectacular, so I may have to see if I can find her book on the garter to add to my library as well.
Hi Nicole, I just found your channel tonight and have watched Sequence and Marling and have both books by MDK. I've knit 17 ten stitch blankets but knit 25 stitches instead of 10. I've also knit All the Shades of Truth by Laura Aylor. I've knitted several items with The Cistella Cowl which I turned into wraps and blankets. I'm currently knitting blankets using The Afterglow Scarf pattern, knitting and purling strips then sewing them together with ribbon yarn. I'm ellymae53 on ravelry. Looking forward to watching your other videos.
I love garter stitch. You're right, the smoosh factor is wonderful! I've knit a lot of Martina Behm's shawl (shawlette) patterns partially because I love that they're mostly garter, and thus look good regardless of which side is showing. Oscar is such a cutie - love seeing him pop up with his helpful comments. 😄
With my brain's ability at this point in life, all I can really handle is garter stitch with an occasional knit below or yarn over, so I am a HUGE fan of the garter stitch. I can even doit without looking so I can read/watch a show while knitting. Brainless knitting is my kind of knitting👍😎I'm working on a corner to corner garter stitch baby blanket for my grandson who will be 2 next month. I'm using variegated yarn and it looks beautiful 😍
I absolutely love the changes you made to the Ravi cardigan. Could you give a quick explanation on your neck modifications. I did look on your project page.
I’ll have to take a look to remind myself, but I think all I did was cast on fewer stitches and eliminate some of the short rows. When I get a chance, I’ll confirm that 😊
Did a modular miter square garter stitch bedspread from KnitPicks kits that was beautiful - I don't know how to send you a pick, or I would include it.
I actually love garter stitch 😀. I find it really soothing. Think Aeria by Linnea Ornstein, or a c2c baby blanket with a section of mosaic, or Hue shift blanket. It’s wonderful isn’t it 😄
It would surprise me if you can’t find one. The key to duplicate stitch is following the path of the yarn underneath. If you can keep the “duplicate” yarn running on that path, you’re golden 😁
Oh, and to give myself a lift, I bought the "Emotional Support Chicken" pattern; all garter stitch and short rows, uses up leftovers AND in the end you get a squishy pillow.
😊i am a garter stitch junkie...you nailed this video! Love it. Have all EZ books and Sally Neville...she is definitely a favorite of mine. Anyways, such a fun video! Thanks❤

Hooray! I was delighted to meet you and your friends 😊 I hope we can run into another again 🥰

I'm happy you found me, too! It's absolutely my goal to be that "knitting friend" for everyone who wants/needs one 😘
Okay, okay, okay Nicole! I surrender! You've opened my eyes to the versatility of garter stitch! The no roll edges was new information to me despite how long I've been knitting. Thanks for another informative and entertaining video!
Yay!
Hadn't thought about adding slip stitches to garter. What a wonderful idea. THANKS
You're so welcome!

Yay! Thanks for watching 😊
I have all Sally’s books and love them.
Thank you for making this video. It’s so informative. Thank you.
I am a big fan of garter stitch and have knit quite a few projects. Thank you for making a whole video of it! ❤
Thanks for watching!
Thank you Nicole for yet another fabulous video 💖🧶
Thanks for watching! 😍
I love your words describing garter stitch.
I love everything about your videos. You are so cute.

Sally is so great, right??? 😁
I'm making the Wina Shawl for a cousin of mine. It's all garter stitch in puffy shell designs using German Short rows.
That sounds amazing! I’m going to look it up 😊
I didn’t like garter in my beginning knitting adventure but I absolutely love it now. I am currently making the sweet shop blanket which uses scraps in garter stitch
Wonderful!

Yup. I totally understand…SO MANY! 😋
Sally Melvil also did a wonderful video class on stash busting tops. I've done 2 of them.
Yes! Sally has some really great ideas for stash busting 😀
As you were talking about the modular mitered square tie you did for your husband, I used that same basic technique for shaping the sleeves on a stash busting sweater I made a while back - worked on it while on a cruise that also had a group that met called the Knitters and Knatters.
That is so cool! 😍
I'm really enjoying your videos. The only thing I seem to be experiencing is an overwhelming desire for a martini.
I wonder how that happened? 😉🤣
I forgot all about The Knit Stitch! One of the first knitting books I owned. Just went and brought a replacement copy after watching this video!
I’m pausing here 0:16 to tell you: “I love you!”
Ha ha! Love you back 🥰
Ah Saltspring Island 💜 I spent a night there and it is amazing.
Looking at the intro I thought you might talk about guerilla knitting as well. Great that you show that crazy -yarn exploding- side as well

Ha ha! I love that, Simonetta. And I totally agree about the simplest solution being the most elegant 🥰
hi i enjoyed watching i am a new knitter

Fabulous pattern for garter and your version is FANTASTIC!! Well done 😁

Sally’s books are worth tracking down! Thanks for watching 😊
Ive made a Pembroke scarf which is all garter and the squish factor is everything!

Your 25-stitch blankets are AMAZING! Keep that garter love going strong! 😍

Yay for Team Garter Stitch! 😁
Wow, this makes me feel excited to cast on some new projects

Yes!!
I too love garter stitch, but I’m stumped how to work duplicate stitches on it. Maybe someone on YT has a tutorial …
It would surprise me if you can’t find one. The key to duplicate stitch is following the path of the yarn underneath. If you can keep the “duplicate” yarn running on that path, you’re golden 😁
What about socks? Most squishy of all socks, easy as they are usually knit side to side!@ 31:14 ❤
Right! Thank you - I knew I was leaving something out 😋
How did you get such an even mixing of the 2 blues? Usually it comes out blotchy.
Oh, and to give myself a lift, I bought the "Emotional Support Chicken" pattern; all garter stitch and short rows, uses up leftovers AND in the end you get a squishy pillow.
Excellent!! 😁
"It's knit every stitch", UNLESS you're knitting in the round!
Yes! You’re absolutely correct. I was remiss in not mentioning that. Thank you!
@@Knicoleknits, WHERE can I find your pattern for that mosaic knit cowl? I just loaded the video, but I can't find the pattern anywhere.
I haven’t published it yet - but it’s coming soon! 😊
