I was taught to knit by my Swedish grandmother when I was about 7 years old (about 56 years ago). She taught my Mom as well to knit and purl in the combined continental method. Once you have good, even tension (which comes with practice), there is no need to do the 1st purl stitch in a 2x2 rib differently. As my grandmother would say, start as you mean to continue. That 7 year old, learned to knit with fingering weight yarn on likely 2.5 mm needles.

Definitely nothing lazy about trying to purl from in back. Thanks for sharing , may your cables look spectacular 🧶 ❤

Is the first purl a Russian purl followed by a regular purl stitch? I've seen this combination knitting before but not familiar with the correct names

Not exactly the Russian purl is stitched in the front legs like the normal purl. But this combination makes the ribbing hold better togheter. I hope that helps.

Does this work in the round only? How would it be if I want to knit flat?

Hello from a local Continental Combined knitter! With all due respect, I am asking you to please consider using a more appropriate name for this maneuver in the future. I realize that there is not a standardized terminology in knitting, but Combined, Russian or even easy purl would be preferable. In the US the word lazy has a negative connotation.
This purl is the hallmark of Combined knitting and when it is called lazy it feels personal and infers that Combined knitters are lazy too. I know this is not at all what you meant. Using a more main stream descriptive like Combo or Russian would also give your student better results when doing further research. Thanks for your work in our community.
