  • Welcome back! Today we’re discussing Thomas Tuchel’s NEW 3-5-2 at Chelsea in Tactics Explained! After winning the 20/21 Champions League and picking up the second most wins in the Premier League since his first game in charge, Thomas Tuchel has already been a big success at Chelsea. Much of his early success has been down to his usual 3-4-3 but it’s the emergence of a new tactic in the bigger games that’s got me excited.

    Regardless of the shape, Chelsea maintain the same principles in possession. With the ball, they look to dominate possession - recycling the ball between their three centre backs, two midfielders and goalkeeper whilst pushing their wing backs up the pitch. The numbers involved in build up and the individual quality of the players make Chelsea extremely press resistant. This allows them to remain patient as they look to constantly switch the point of attack to create gaps in their opposition’s shape that they can progress through. Once they reach the final third, Chelsea look to create by slipping forwards in behind with through balls or by switching the play out to a wing back who can send in a low cross. But without the ball there is a noticeable change between systems.
    ► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: bit.ly/SMDTwitch
    In the bigger games, Tuchel has tended to switch to a 3-5-2 with a real emphasis on being defensively solid and playing on the counter attack.This doesn’t mean parking the bus like Jose Mourinho, instead Tuchel adopts more of a gegenpress as Chelsea look to force turnovers through their structure and pressing traps. Without the ball Chelsea’s shape becomes a 5-3-2. One of the main reasons that the Blues are so hard to play against is because of how difficult it is to play through this setup. In their mid or low block, Chelsea use a zonal defensive setup.
    A key feature of Tuchel’s setup is their pressing. Chelsea’s 5-3-2 often sees the ball side central midfielder step up to join the front 2 to press, becoming a 5-2-3. What generally happens is Chelsea drop into their 5-3-2 with fairly narrow strikers but a wide midfield 3. This central block of 5 players means teams generally play wide as Chelsea rock over to put pressure on the ball with an outside midfielder. This is such an effective tactic because the opposition are boxed in by the touchline which restricts where the ball can go and usually means that a simple forward pass isn’t on. If Chelsea can recover the ball through an interception they’ve got a huge counter attacking threat that is spearheaded by the two central strikers.
    Statman Dave Clips ➡ bit.ly/StatmanClips
    So how do you play against Tuchel’s 3-5-2? I think the key is that you have to be brave and play risky tactics which play into Tuchel’s fast breaks. You either have to play through the centre of Chelsea with one touch play and get at the back 5 with numbers. Alternatively you have to match up your system and deploy a man to man scheme in a 3-4-1-2. In the Champions League final, Manchester City tried to press Chelsea with a back 4 but it cost them the only goal of the game. This isn’t the first time that Chelsea have done this to City either as Ziyech scored the winner in the FA Cup after a very similar switch to a wingback allowed Mount to get Timo Werner in behind City’s defence.
    With some of the best players in the world, an incredible amount of squad depth and one of the best tacticians in Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea are going places and I’d argue that the German currently has the best big game setup in the world.
    Do you agree? Have you been impressed by Tuchel’s Chelsea? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

      @@YvesDarbouze nope Chelsea plays way better attacking football than manutd. Man utd plays very defensive football, Chelsea plays very attacking football the only time Chelsea failed to atack was against man City and Chelsea lost 1-0 man city's press made it tough for Chelsea, so in the next game tuchel figured out how to handle high pressing by introducing a very good dribblers in midfield so next time when Chelsea face man City Chelsea will do much better against them.

      Individualism isn't a problem to the club imo, at least not when attacking. We must go with a 3-4-3 formation against chelsea with back 3 including lindeloff and McFred in the midfield. Ronaldo to play as a false 9 to play between the lines and win Ariel duels. Ask greenwood and Rashford to make runs & exploit space behind the defense. Lindeloff and varane to play long balls behind the defense or target ronaldo.

    I wish we also had these high pressing german top managers. Sadly liverpool and chelsea have them and one of them is with bayern. These guys are genius and have the best system that makes teams play like a unit. Even normal players play like stars in their system. We are way behind tactically with ole. Ole reminds me of lampard who had so many good players signed for him yet the performances never changed but tuchel changed everything with the same players and now they are favourites to win the title this year. Conte is good but he is another mourinho who is full of problems. Zidane is good but don't think he can do anything special without superstars. Sadly there are not many top managers available. Our rivals have the best managers in the world. Klopp tuchel and pep.

      But then I love to see this way 😁

      You can't do this now as Chelsea acquired arguably the best holding back to defense striker in the world in big Rom. They can use him as a focal point and channel their attacks through him to then paly either advancing wing back thereby nullifying the sit back tactic. Chelsea are a huge threat this year as the game against my team Liverpool showed that other than player discipline I don't see a weakness in that team.

      @@BlatantPlagiarism every team has a weakness, when rudiger advance into midfield, he job to draw a marker to allow his more creative teammates get on the ball, where if rudiger had time on the ball, he can’t do much, the plan is to sit on the pivots and follow the man dropping into the half spaces, this would be a start to dismantle Chelsea, look at the west brom game, 5-2 and see what they did to beat Chelsea

  • @andrewphillip7263
    @andrewphillip7263 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I completely agree with the tactics said. However chelsea manages to keep extra clean sheets and concede less cause other teams open up cause its more of a defensive play. When you take Liverpool and City there's a dominance in all areas. Chelsea sits back more often and the play opens for them. I'm not a massive fan of having almost 6-7 defenders at the back

    • @mauricealaso3927
      @mauricealaso3927 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah right 6 or 7 defenders with the second most goals scored in the league...Chelsea are NOT a defensive team, they have more of the ball in 80% of matches they play...I find it laughable that united, Liverpool and city fans can go to ridiculous lengths to discredit Thomas Tuchel's genius.....just wait, he'll win the league before your very eyes
