The thing is, Blue Beetle's whole thing is being a really funny teenager, they HAD to put jokes all around to deliver on what we expect from Blue Beetle. However, given how a lot of what isnt the jokes was actually great, including the emotional moments, I feel like there is some great potential for their next movies focusing on more serious superheroes

    • @freddice8156

Blue beetle being a Hispanic hero is one of the reasons I loved the film so much. Seeing people like us in the spotlight is practically nonexistent (especially Mexican and Mexican American) and they did a really great job portraying a hispanic family. It might not be a masterpiece in terms of originality but the actors and the smaller details easily made it my favorite film I've seen this year. Obviously im biased but Xolo Maridueña did an incredible job and i loved just about everything about this movie. These traits don't align with I would say 75% of DC characters in my opinion. I dug the family for the most part, loved that Ted Kord wasn’t just glossed over. The villains were lacking though. That scene with Cypress Hill scene was very sick. If you know Blue Beetle they have some of his classic weapons that i was sure would be missing, like the staples, the battering ram, and of course the swords and canons. I’d love to see more from this, especially with the end credit scene.

From what I've seen, this movie is REALLY good at capturing the hispanic audience. Honestly it feels like a movie that successfully represents hispanics(not in a pandering or ham-fisted way) and I think there's a lot about it that might not click nearly as well if you aren't in tune with that culture. it's not a perfect movie, but it's extremely effective at introducing Blue Beetle and making it have it's own 'tone', standing apart from other "similar" characters. It's nothing revolutionary, it's not gonna resonate with everyone the same way, but it's very effective at what it does, which is a satisfying array of different things (heartfelt family dynamics, social commentary of _multiple_ hispanic related things that all mix/work together, finding purpose when becoming an adult out of collage, fun action hero movie, referential/cultural and practical comedy; there's just a really solid amount of things to dig on, and it didn't feel like any of it was half-assed), especially if you come from a background that is close to the demographic it targets and represents; all these things made it super fun to watch. I wouldn't really change it in any significant way.
(the only thing coming to mind that might have been a little half-assed would be the 'no killing' sub-plot, but that is introduced at a moment that feels natural for him to not wanna go to that extreme and hold out hope he can turn everything back to normal, he just sticks by it until he almost doesn't and it works well. the movie is less concerned about his "moral arch" and more about his own identity, I agree they should point out the differences between him and his family or just better define his stance on the matter, but it works as it is because he's one talking about what _he_ doesn't wanna be, relating to his "purpose"/"identity" and what his own boundaries are for the person he is becoming, it's not really concerning itself with whether he believes in it or not on a wider social political level.)
It is a pretty simple super hero origin story, but using that as a negative is like saying "the Beatles are too catchy, this song of theirs is too catchy so I don't like it", it's like saying "this strawberry cake is sweet, it taste like strawberry". It wasn't such a negative review tbf, and it's an honest opinion to say "I'm too tired of classic superhero origin stories", but it's wierd to fault the movie for it when the movie is deliberately going that route for it's skeleton and adding the extra texture/flavors on other aspects of it (such as the themes of exploiting communities of lower class and gentrification. As well as writing good hispanic humor and classic hispanic family values/dynamic with a character that is in an awkward but relatable spot for a lot of young adults; Spiderman nowadays is either still in collage or has Ironman money to back him up, so again- it's actually a pretty refreshing start for a simple 'everyman' protagonist). point is- there's more to this movie then what some critics seem to convey, maybe I just had a really good siting, but I honestly think some of the unique merits of the movie are flying through the head of many, or it's simply not resonating as well as it is for other audiences. I'd give it an 8/10 at the very least, but if looking at it more "objectively" for a more "general" audience I could at most lower it to a 7.5, '6'(60%) is too low for how much this movie gets right despite being a 'standard superhero origin movie'.
one last side note I like is that they actually managed to not make him sound like a corny "now I'm gonna be a hero" youngster cliche, it's really all about his family and his 'place'/'purpose'/'identity' for his life, I just really think Charlie missed a lot on this one, but it's alright- even an amazing strawberry cake with dark chocolate or cheescake is not gonna taste all that special if you're fed up with having other strawberry deserts for over a month.

The thing about Blue Beetle being anti-killing is that he’s basically the same as Superman, where if he isn’t morally against killing, he would basically be a planetary level threat. The Scarab is capable of manifesting planet-destroying nukes if Jaime really wanted it to, he just doesn’t, because duh. Anyway, it’s sort of weird that he’s down with his family killing in the movie, but at least they kept the bit about him not being a killer because that’s definitely against his code.

the movie is dope if ur mexican or a latino. its amazing at implementing its references and captures the dynamic of mexican families in the US. A lot of the humor lands way better if u know what is referenced or can understand spanish. Having humor even when life kinda sucks is very common for at least mexicans and other latinos.

Just saw the movie a few hours ago. I feel it's fair to say Blue Beetle is a very safe film that has potential to be more. I hope when (God I hope it doesn't fall through) the sequel comes out it maybe can flesh out some of that potential, but Charlie's critiques are pretty on point.
Still a really fun movie though, I recommend it!

The reason why Spider-Man 2 from 2004 will always be incredible and beloved and regarded as one of the best superhero movies of all time is because while it’s a really amazing action movie with 10/10 fight scenes, it’s also got so many layers to the emotional side of it. Every single character in Spider-Man 2 is trying to find themselves, especially Peter and Otto but also Harry, MJ and Aunt May. There are constant emotional struggles throughout the whole film and they never feel out of place, they all serve purpose to the overall story being presented. The scene with Peter and May outside with the little boy, to this day, might be the best scene in comic book movie history. And then yeah, on top of that, the clock tower/train fight (especially the extended version) is one of the best fight scenes in cinema history.
TLDR; superhero movies shouldn’t be afraid to add emotion and personal storytelling the whole way through. This is what made S2 so perfect.

i think deadpool started this thing where every movie had to be a comedy, you could see the transition to it in the avenger series a bit but more for the standalone movies. Deadpool did very well (to me) with that kind of writing, but the execs must not realize that IS deadpool. from the comics.

Idk, I think it started more with GOTG than it did with Deadpool. I don't think there's a single movie we can really pin the blame on, but The Avengers, GOTG, and Deadpool are probably the 3 biggest influences

Best Super Hero film I have seen in years. Great characters, a proper story, CGI polished, tears, laughter, action it had everything! Cinema I went to was half full which in this day and age is a good result! Loads more than I have seen for Marvel & DC movies over the last few years (apart from latest SM film) Popularity and Comic prices do not make a good film.....Antman 3 and Wakanda Forever were poor IMO.......Solid 9/10 for me. And I'm going to see it again........haven't done that since the 1980's
