If you've watched Young Justice, the alien voice is actually a bit malevolent in the cartoon. It makes for a good dynamic because it's constantly trying to make him "terminate" people while he resists. I sort of wish they had gone that route instead of making it so the alien voice stopped him from doing something drastic.
If I remember correctly Blue Beetle is a fairly new character, from about 2005 or so, he's definitely newer than Spawn as a character. He was cool though, the original selling point was that the suit was supposed to be the ultimate hero, able to solve any problem and kill any villain, but with it being a trick by an alien race. The Reach couldn't just take over new planets, that would cause a war with the Guardians of the Universe(who created the Green Lanterns) they couldn't win, so instead they created super suits and sent them to planets to take over subtly. The suit would prove the worlds greatest defender, then the reach would show up wanting to reclaim the suit, but upon seeing how much it was needed offer to defend the planet in exchange for joining The Reach(and then they wipe out the native culture over a few generations before fully converting it to a slave world when no one remembers what it was like to be free). The suit doesn't care about lives at all because it was created by aliens who see humans as future slaves, why do they care if a few undesirable humans wind up dead. Luckily for Earth the presence of magic broke the AI somewhat so it's less effective but more willing to follow his direction(it's still never going to stop him killing someone, and especially not someone who is a threat to The Reach capable of replicating Scarabs).
Jaimes Reye, the Blue Beetle this film is based on, first appeared in a DC comic in 2006. There were other Blue Beetles before him, but they were very different characters.
This movie was so safe, it was essentially Iron man and Venom combined. The thing that made Blue Beetle interesting in multiple animated shows/movies is that the Scarab was uncomfortable around humans. If it thought a human looked at it funny, then it would instinctively try to attack. It's a gift and curse that prevented Jaime from even being near his family because he could potentially harm or even kill them. He had to teach it to get comfortable with humans. Where's a conflict like this in the movie? Even the no kill rule could've been explored more. What if Jaime had a no kill rule, but the Scarab didn't and forced him to kill. That would certainly make him stand out.
Yup. They flipped the relationship of who wants to not kill, presumably thinking themselves clever for doing so, without giving any thought to _why_ it was that way in the first place. Classic Tzeenchian 'change for the sake of change' mistake.
@@joegaddy2030it’s an old anime where an alien suit merges with the main hero Sho and goes on to helping kill off other aliens trying to invade the world and take over. It’s surprisingly gruesome to the point where Sho is k!ll3d while in the Guyver suit and the suit takes over and finishes the fight and hides somewhere to enter a hibernation mode and rebuilds the part of Sho’s brain that was eaten and resurrects him. Never allowing him to d!e.
Exactly. I figured Jaime didn't want to kill cause maybe the studio wanted this to be a kid friendly move, but his uncle was stepping on folks in that big bug, his Abuela was shooting folks with that big gun, so it was just poor writing that resulted in Jamie's no killing thing, or perhaps the poor writing was the cause of there being no explanation why he didn't want to kill.
The thing that intrigued me about this film was that his whole family knew about the super hero thing right away. That was a different dynamic than what we’ve seen before, and it did interest me a little, but with DCs track record that one thing wasn’t enough to make me want to pay theater prices.
I was just happy that they didn't spend half of the film explaining his backstory and the families like marvel has done with their recent movies and shows
Late comment, but I kinda hate the trend of "We already know about everything." It's like how in improv there's a rule that you don't stop an idea unless you have a better idea. You can't just have characters say "We already know that, so you don't need to explain it," because that cuts out a lot of opportunities for story. Like, part of the reason why Raimi's Spider-Man movies were so good was because of the conflicts that emerged from Harry not knowing that his best friend was Spider-Man. Imagine the universe where instead of that Harry was like "Lol, it was super obvious that you were Spider-Man, bro." You could see it in Far From Home where they set up an emotional scene where Peter is about to reveal his identity only to get cut-off with "I know you're Spider-Man," which is funny in the moment, but it probably would have made the movie better if we had gotten that emotional scene.

Honestly it's not just DC, but Superhero movies and TV Shows are underperforming due to the overexposure, inconsistent storytelling, and the removal and downright replacement of old and beloved characters with bland and forgettable ones, doesn't help that they have been destroyed when it comes to quality

If he was truly embracing modern Hollywood, he would have returned as a woman who is portrayed as being inexplicably better at everything than his former self despite having relatively little experience or knowledge of these things. The audience would quickly grow tired of this pretense and the channel would collapse faster than modern Disney's stock price.
I think more writers need to understand why Succession is so much more interesting than 90% of modern movies, despite it being 99% people in rooms talking to each other. Characters are always juggling obstacles. Even a funeral isnt just a funeral, but a way for certain characters to showcase their value and resilience to shareholders.
Those types of movies where characters are just sitting around in a room and talking have become one of my favorite genres, especially if the topic of conversations are interesting enough as well as the characters. Movies like My Dinner with Andre, The Man from Earth, Waking Life, Stalker, etc. Those types of movies really scratch that itch for me. Korean/Japanese films also follow this formula so well and are under appreciated.
Reminds me of 12 Angry Men. Progress and conflict abound because they're arguing about the same murder case for the whole movie, perspectives and evidence are provided and challenged, and we know the stakes from the get-go: a teenager or young man is being tried with murder and about to be sentenced to death if they find him guilty.
What I found strange was that Jamie was a superhero fan. From what I understand, he's always dreamed of being a hero in a world with people like Batman and Superman already saving people. Then he gets the scarab and it's a nightmare because he's stuck with a murderous robot bug stuck to his spine but it's also a fantasy because he sees it as an opportunity. In the movie, he only sees it as a curse. His family, mainly his uncle, are the ones that say he can work it out.
yeah i found that frustrating as well. like dude, you're now given this power you've always wanted since idk how long ago, and yet now you want to get rid of it? he didnt deserve this power indeed
You have to see it from a latino prospective... Like he's worked so hard to get through college and has dreams and ambitions to get his family out of poverty. But no...he instead gets stuck with a this alien lifeform that he can't get rid of unless he dies. Like its a cruel joke, All this crazy shit will happen before he and his family could live a stable life.
I feel like the writers didn't even care about Blue Beetle either. Jamie Reyes had no autonomy here, he was just taken for a ride. In a story, sometimes it's a good idea to have the hero forced to be the hero, but give then a point where they have a choice. For instance, in the first Iron Man film, Tony Stark was captured by terrorists, but he escaped. He didn't have a choice, it was escape or die. Once he escaped he had a choice, either continue his playboy lifestyle or be a hero. Ultimately, he choose to be the hero because he wanted to. He felt he needed to make things right.
Sounds like the beetle (scarab) could have crawled up anyone's ass (can't believe I'm saying that), and it would have made no difference who it was, as long as it had its host.
“Had no autonomy here” Ah yes the superhero who’s known to have an uncontrollable sentient bug attached to his back has no autonomy. That’s the entire point of blue beetle in the beginning of every one of his origin stories. He shouldn’t just be able to control a world destroying bug.
@@Z48654 If that's the entire point of Blue Beetle than it perfectly explains why nobody cared about Blue Beetle until there is a movie about it, and even after that people still don't care. Jaime is basically just another passive protagonist who gets pushed by the plot because the writers say so. Filmento already said it clearly in the video, if the scarab chooses anybody else in his family to become the bearer of the suit then it wouldn't change a thing. Goes to show how "interesting" his character is.
Glad to have your voice back, it makes a world of difference. I didn't go see Blue Beetle, because it just gave Chinese knockoff straight to DVD vibes. Nothing from the trailers made this feel fresh and worth watching, so it makes since neither did the whole movie.
The whole artistic process of storytelling is fascinating, whether it be a movie, a show, a comic, a book, etc. Some authors know how to make their scenes mean something, and others just put stuff on the screen/page and leave it at that.
@@TheMysteryDriverThis👍, u can never know if they've hired a director or casted one. (just to be their puppet and their scapegoat for shitty projects)

Does anyone see the irony of this "We are Mexican we might be unfairly arrested" scene being juxtaposed by the fact that the Uncle has a EMP Generator? a literal device of terror.
I think a good intro would have been to play the whole college angel. The main character should have had the weight of getting his family out of poverty weighing on him while also trying to be the first of his family to graduate college. He should have been shown using "Ganas" to succeed even when everyone thinks he cant. Then once he graduates college and is met with the real world challenges we already expect him to use that "Ganas" to succeed.
I have the feeling that there's a reason for this to not happen, and for the family wanting to move without any actual motive and stuff like that. I think that there was some sort of original version of the script in which Jaime's family was actually poor but, due to being afraid of being called racists for putting them in a bad economic situation, the writers scrapped this very important bit of context.
@@HarverTheSlayerwhat do you mean? In the movie his family is poor, they literally said they were gonna lose the house because they couldn’t afford it anymore
The only problem I had with Blue Beetle was that it focused way too much on the family dynamic and not Jaime's development as a hero(because there literally is none).
I feel like there's a problem with how families are portrayed in these projects now. It just seems like there's one person who's allowed to be serious, and everyone else just says random goofy lines and gets yelled at for things. Also, they keep doing the "Why don't you find a nice girlfriend/boyfriend?" thing. That's really hacky.
It was beyond generic. Superhero films don’t need a heaven scene with daddy telling hero that they’ll always be stronger, shit is corny. The story shoulda been about this crazy alien being taken down by the military, not some generic ahh evil company
I cannot understand how entire rooms full of supposed story experts and creative genius executives keep putting hundreds of millions into this bottom of the barrel quality work. It takes you 20 minutes to dissect and tear these films apart, just about the same as the audience watching, and still they don't get it. There's entire seasons of Mr Robot where I have no clue WHAT is happening, but I damn sure always understand WHY it's happening and how it all is adding up to something. The unbelievable and underrated Amazon show Patriot is also the same way. The events of what you're watching can be confusing and disjointed through much of the running time but the way it all ties together giving deeper meaning to every little scene and easter egg is just incredible and satisfying and awesome to see.
My biggest problem with this film was the villains, I didn't care about them. The moment I saw Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Manta) in Aquaman I was instantly invested.
The real mistakes are not in the writing itself. It's a movie made to be trendy and show cool stuff happening on screen, like the scene where the main character is flying through the city. The real mistakes were executives and producers thinking that audiences care about these movies.
What you didnt see is that the rich girl who lost her estranged father, dressed the MC in her father's clothes, put him in her father's room, began talking about her father's life and THEN tried to kiss the guy who's dressed as her father, I mean thats just great subtle characterization right there.
Blue Beetle is a guilty pleasure of mine. The film has all of the right ideas (for example, villain actually thematically fits the film, unlike Shazam 2 or The Flash if you can call it a villain). With just a liiiiiittle bit of better execution, you can make a cool Spy Kids-esque story where Jaime Reyes gets to kick some ass while the family also get some share with Ted Kord super gadgets on the third act.
I'll stop your pleasure The show used on the camera hack is meant to be an insult to Mexicans, every Mexican hates the show and it's creator, being the biggest shame of the country, the creator claimed that bethoven stole his songs, that he created em and even held copyright of em for long time, we feel ashamed of the whole thing, no one likes chapulín colorado, everyone hates Chespirito
The Flash's villain is a version of Barry who wants to change the past no matter the consequences, which makes Barry realize he needs to be better, resolving his conflict. The villain literally shows the hero a dark reflection of himself causing the hero to change. I honestly think that's more thematically relevant than Carapace... He was only thematically relevant because he was also exploited by the CEO lady. But Jaime already knows the CEO lady exploits people, so he doesn't even grow as characters after learning this. Carapax could have been a robot or a sentient horse abused by the CEO lady and nothing really would have changed.
I think it’s a classic example of trying to talk about social issues but forgetting that it needs to be cohesive and u still have to write a good story. The story always comes first and the other issues u want to talk about second
You know the thing creatives gotta remember about social issues, diverse casting, politics, and things like that? The silent majority of viewers don't care. They just want to see a movie. It, in and of itself, is white noise to them at best, and a distraction to them at worst. The fact this is the first live-action superhero movie to star a Latino, or that it touches on "important" topics means sweet fuck all to them. You have to do something with such things that piques the interest of the viewers. If you can make your audience laugh, or make them care about the characters, they'll sit and happily listen to absolutely everything you have to say about social issues. Nobody's going to watch a movie for opinions on social issues alone; you can get those for free literally anywhere.
The problem with this Blue Beetle movie is that it should be the sequel... What makes Iron man so good is the set up from multiple movies. Blue beetle has had 3 main iterations that could have all had a moment, kind of like a homage to comics silver, golden ages before settling on the modern Blue Beetle. This movie could have started with Dan Garret (the OG Blue Beetle with a mystical scarab granting them power) saving his assistant inventor Ted Kord from the ancient alien artifact being dug up. Ted Kord becomes the head of the company and attempts to shut down the project knowing what horrors could be unleashed from O.M.A.C. (of course the bad guys (maybe Checkmate) continue the project without Ted knowing). Ted meets Jaime and is impressed with them, offers them a job as his assistant, stuff happens. Ted in remembrance to Dan attempts to make a high tech version of the magical Scarab Dan had because Jaime convinces Ted the Alien tech could be used for good. O.M.A.C'S attack in the finale, Ted fights them with his gadgets but dies at the same time as Jaime is bonded to the new high tech scarab. Now we have a tragic hero arc. The end. The sequel is Jaime figuring out his powers without a mentor and fighting more O.M.A.C./ Checkmate stuff. I just want Ted Kord to get some love, he was a great character with no super powers besides his intellect and the gadgets he builds. O.M.A.C did him dirty.
Not to mention imagine how much it would make the movie stand out to non-comic book audiences if they actually killed the title hero at the end of his debut movie, without teasing his resurrection in the next movie.
Suit first flight would be a great scene if: - the suit was completly careless about human lives on the way and main guy was using his wits to prevent harm from happen showing they duality. Calculated machine vs empathy of man.
This was a very good point. It was missing all these things for me to care. Yeah I cried and got emotional with jaime wanting to kill the bad guy and the suit stopping him but it was just an "eh" watch till then. I was disappointed he was mostly incapacitated too and not doing anything with the suit himself. Edit: I cried because jaime's dad dying by their ends and just wanted to go all out was stopped by an alien that was for killing tho realized it isn't always that good. My grandpa passed away a few months ago too. So it's relatable now knowing how others feel when their loved ones pass away. The scene where he gets a heart attack and everyone was being kept from helping him was powerful on paper but could've been more impactful if the villains were better written. All I could think of was "are they really this stupid?" since most of the bad guys just took the family appart like police do in raids but noooo, an old man grasping for air while his daugther cries out for help is not a sign at all, not at all! so yeah. If villains were better written from the get go, how this video mentions it, that scene would've blown many people away and most of the story beats would've been memorable with overall good writing.
I have never cried because of a movie ever in my life. There are movies that have gotten me choked up sure, but I just seriously can't fathom how you couldve genuinely felt that emotional towards anything in this movie. I've seen it, it's entirely eye candy while your brain sleeps and thinks about other things. I always assume people are exaggerating when they say that but there's a lot of movies where I could at least understand it from someone else's perspective, but this movie is not one of them.
This origin story is the same as all the origins stories I've seen before. Even all the story beats are the same. These superhero movies are starting to feel all the same.
Whilst I thought the opening scene was a tad dull, I loved the introduction of the leads at the airport etc (Maybe it's because I remember being 22 & possessing the Jaime's mindset/passion for making change) Also thought those opening shots were beautiful; really made their neighborhood feel real (rather than a polystyrene set or cgi)
I did go see blue beetle actually, but it was very boring for the most part. The badass Abuela was the best part 100%. Like you correctly stated, there are too many moments in this movie where the viewers are asking "why?". Why is the thing that is currently happening, happening? Why did this character make this choice? Do equalizer 3 next. I loved it. Eager to see your thoughts
@@justsomeguywholovesberserk6375 You don't understand what's happening. Nothing can save DC now. You think the problem was isolated with the last set of films? Nope. It's the management at WB that hurt and maybe even killed the brand. DC, in the general publics eyes, is a second rate copy of the MCU. DC would have to go above and beyond with each movie for the next several years in order for it to get any type of attraction from the general audience. Problem is, WBD and James Gunn do not want to go "above and beyond". They're not going to take risks and they're definitely not going to try and be different from the MCU. DC is dying. It's over, at least for the next 10 to 20 years.
One thing I honestly disliked was how they completely got rid of the scarab being murderous and wanting to kill things and giving Miguel a moral dilemma
I'm surprised they didn't put the scarab on the niece. She's the one doing everything, Jaime's being taken for a ride. Plus, that would go along with the wave of female superheroes that we've seen recently. Who knows, maybe they'll transfer it to her in the inevitable flop of a sequel.
I think its more likely that the writers will use the whole Reach storyline to eventually give the rest of the family the other scarabs. It would totally suck but my expectations for hollywood writing are very low.

What Filmento talks about in the 1st-half of this video regarding starting you off with who the character is and what they can do, etc is something i always likes about James Bond films, and the first few Indiana Jones films. They would start the movie where we immediately join the protagonist near the END of the "previous" mission. We'd see the protagonist showing what they can, and can't do, overcoming some obstacles, etc and maybe even briefly get an introduction to some other characters. When the mission is over, we settle at home/H.Q./etc and THEN the start of the movie's plot really begins. It's a great way for the audience to "hit the floor running" with a rollercoaster that achieves so much to give you some action, dialogue, characters, with adrenalin, tension, emotions, etc fired-up ready to start you on the real adventure.
That's because most of the people claiming to want to tell those stories really only know surface details in the first place. Characters aren't people to them, they're a list of characteristics to check off.
I loved the characters and the movie overall was MUCH more satisfying than the Flash. It wasn’t great but still legit good and seems like the best DC movie we’ll get this year with Aquaman’s apparently terrible screening impressions.
Nah, The Flash was better. At least you could see that it had certain plot points that it failed to deliver. You finish watching the flash, and you can say it has certain failings. You finish watching Blue Beetle, and you finish watching Blue Beetle. There's nothing to talk about, to like or hate, you've just spent hours of your time on a movie that you feel nothing for afterwards. Not excitement, not annoyance, not even boredom. Just a passage of time, and the knowledge that it occupied that time

While your analysis on the critical narrative side was good I don't think this was the reason it didn't do well in the box office. On rotten tomatoes both critics and general audience loved the movie. It also followed the superhero origin story formula but since this is a character that not many know it focuses more on the protagonist and the family side characters so we at least resonate with the emotional beats. It doesn't help that the past 3 DC films bombed critically and financially so it makes sense that the general audience would not trust this brand to watch. You cannot forget that this movie released during a strike so there was almost no actors marketing and WB did nothing to market or push to theaters worldwide. If WB cared this easily could've been DCs Black Panther financially and culturally but again that is also due to Marvels success that guaranteed that people show up. I'm upset that this movie didn't fully succeed in theaters but I'm glad I saw it 5 times in theaters and that people who did watch it loved it too. Already have my preorder for 4k steelbook as well.
Black Panther showed culture. This movie didn't. It only showed complains and stereotypes. In addition, following the hero formula without a proper scenario is laughable but then it is a dc film so it is expected. If you loved this movie then no wonder this generation is screwed.
The movie just missed too many points. The uncle and grandma having so much no how of the blue beetle and weapons/transportation without any back story on it. Like he said the intro was poor. Black Panther Atleast starts you off with a bit of history of who the black Panther is and that there is More than one, leading that to T’challas father who was the old BP killing his uncle. They showed they have some special lip tattoo that glows which gives exclusivity to the characters world. BP hits a lot of good points that you remember that was passed on to the following movies. Blue Beetle sadly missed out on most of those points. Plus the protagonist did everything in his power to get caught and put his family in a terrible position, which made him slightly dislikable as a protagonist. Spider-Man did it too in no way home but it was done differently.
We’ve seen literally every scene in this movie before in other RECENT superhero movies. Shang Chi just cut a bus in half. Omac = iron man 2. Villain and final fight = iron man 1. Flash just sped through the city really fast. I could go on and on.
In my teens, only reading x-men, spider-man and daredevil, I invented my own hero who's look was based off the green hornet, and I called him blue beetle. Then I found out about the DC character and was disappointed. Then Venture Brothers did Blue Morpho which was almost exactly my idea. I don't have a point to make, it just influenced my first impression of the character.
The original Blue Beetle (Dan Garret) was VERY green hornet in a bunch of ways. Beat cop who secretly fights police untouchables with invulnerable chainmail and super vitamins. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Beetle_(Dan_Garrett)
I thought I had created a original comic noir concept in my early 20s. Then I found out Sin City was already a thing. Right down to heavily black and white art with sparse primary colors to emphasize certain aspects. Pretty disappointed but I guess there is very little that hasn't been thought of before.
I have to say though, it was one of the best DC movies. The other two are the first Wonder woman and Justice League. I haven't watched other DC movies TBH. But all DC movies IMHO in general have this major flaw in them. It all boils down to this formula: * Drop in the story where I don't care (something happened somewhere) * Some background story - that doesn't add to anything. * Some more cheeky character introduction with their own background stories. * The bad guy with their own background stories. * Some betrayal (mostly from both sides) * Some mcguffin thats suddenly way more important than ever told. * The bad guy get the upper hand because the good guy isn't motivated enough. * Some kidnapping or something toward the vain of hurting a loved one. * Good guy goes over the edge. * Good guy realises they are on the good side. * Bad guy redemption / sympathy. * Resolution (End good, all good) * Something that contradicts the end good all good. (mostly in the ACS - after credits scene)
As usual, you're right. Such a waste of opportunity. The fact we got yet another evil villain that was evil just for the sake of it really bugged me (pun not intended). Susan Sarandon is more than a decent actress, she would've nailed a complex baddie. They also scored George López, a super famous Latino comedian and actor, to play the crazy uncle. A shame the script was not up to it to make us care enough
At the beginning I immediately thought about how Alita Battle Angel did their hero introduction: A day in the life, Saving the cat, ... you immediately wanted her to succeed even before ypu knew what she needs to succeed at
I am genuinely baffled by how often incompetent filmmakers helm superhero films with $100 million budgets. Is it personal favors? Sexual favors? Nepotism? They shot darts on a board with names? WTF is happening?
I like the fast pace of everything. But then again I also believe the uncle has powers that he never says anything about (like being able to make tech work magically power).
The way the characters talked about Ted Kord made him sound like a better protagonist, to me at least. Side note: Jason Sudeikis as Ted Kord/Blue Beetle would be like Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man. Pretty neat.
What i am most surprised by after watching your video is that Blue Beetle has the same problem as Green Lantern, they both get their powers without a reason. They both fly around playing around without much control. Both are poorly written and their villains are underutilized. There are so many similarities, like what is DC thinking!
@@beatsbynine7922 Sure, i'm not saying the plot points should change. I am saying they could have made it interesting and that they repeated the same mistakes from GL. there is alot they could change in the movie but fundamentaly the problem u have with him and gl on why they got their powers would still persist. they got their powers because they were chosen, changing it by making the villain experiment on him and force the scarab on him or something like would be deviating too much @@asbergan
@@beatsbynine7922 TL;DR No, the animated GL movie from 2009 used the same power gaining plot points as the live action move and was much better. Thus its not the pot points that is the problem, but how they are integrated into the story. I do not think so, I am quite fond of both blue beetle and GL. For instance i recently watched the animated GL from 2009, which mirrors the plot points of the live action movie exactly. However, the animated movie was much better. I believe the problem is not the plot point per se, but instead how they are integrated into the overarching movie plot. The main problem i have with the live action GL is that his powers feel unearned. The solution is to have the character fight an uphill battle to prove he can use the powers, that he is worthy, that the ring made the correct choice. The same parallel can be drawn for blue beetle, his powers where gain not earned similar to GL. Thus the story needs to compensate in one way or another, proving to the viewer that he is worthy, otherwise its bad storytelling.

Happy to hear Filmento back! Don't let those naysayers pull you down about your voice, it's iconic and makes the videos honestly so much more entertaining!
They failed right out of the gate by making a feature movie starring an F-Tier character. As soon as I heard it announced the first thing that came to my mind was, "WHO? Blue WHO now? Who is this guy? Am I being punked?" So they failed before they even began. The rest was an afterthought. All the failures that came after were just that, afterthoughts. Weak character. Weak plot. Weak story. Weak development. Weak acting. Weak dialog. And it's so disappointing because I really like Xolo as an actor and want good things for him OUTSIDE of Cobra Kai. Even knowing he'd be the principal in this wasn't enough for me to be convinced it would work. This film never stood a chance. To me, even if the DCEU wasn't crumbling all around itself, it never had a chance. The main DCEU proper could have been a juggernaut in the box office and this still would've failed. I admire their effort to try and make an F-Tier character work but man, such a lesson in why they AREN'T on screen is all this ended up being.
It's funny how the start is basically "foreshadowing, foreshadowing, one guy is all calm, the bad guys are up to something". But the issue here is, the fun part is things HAPPENING, not being told they'll happen. Wait, is this a variation of "show, don't tell"?
❤Filmento❤ Love how you stick to your fans and come back on the narration. Your voice is perfect for this, the blasè neutral apathetic voice delivering nice jokes. Please, never change 👍👍
DC has some INSANE stories just with the regulars of the Justice League. Why they thought Blue Beetle was a good choice blows my mind. I mean insane stuff that should be R rated and people would love it.
Personally, the reasons I didn't go and see this movie had practically nothing to do with the movie itself: I was tired of effortless copy-paste slop, constant propaganda oozing out of every orifice in Hollywood, and overall just tired of superhero movies that just keep doing the same basic formula. Yeah, Marvel has also lost its touch, but this DC universe never had it: it was a non-stop train-wreck from the beginning that failed to ever make me care. The best marketing that ever happened to this movie was people who confused it for "another Marvel movie."
This movie's biggest mistake was not having Danny Trejo in it. An action/comedy superhero movie with mostly Mexican actors but they don’t include him? Complete missed opportunity.
I get the beginning. It was kinda like a beginner who just read about the hero's journey and decided to write the hero's in their daily life first but they forgot it's not a book
You could use that title "Why the Audience Doesn't Care About You" for a video about whole DCEU. I'm 99% sure that even if WB made a good DCEU movie, it wouldn't change much, people don't care about those movies anymore.
What mainly did it for me, was that I felt like I’ve seen this movie before. Some of the scenes in the trailer already look like something I’ve seen in other films. Not only that but the super hero fatigue was already gettin to me. It’s a bummer because this movie could been delivered differently but instead they played it “safe”. DC had the opportunity to be bigger than (Disney marvel) but they blew it by trying to be like them.
I though about this film, because as Filmento pointed out that Jaime is not interesting character. I was thinking, what if they swaped siblings. What if girl is one from school and Jaime had to step up after father hearth attack working in shop. It could not be showed at this start of movie - maybe some way of him being jelous of sister. Sister will have this dreams of saving family. That why she will run at the Jenny. Jenny will give her blue beetle and she wount open it because she is just good and goal orientated. Jaime get jelous, it can be some first flashback of him working at shop and he will open the box. I did not know, why blue beetle would pick him. They were always saying, it choose him, but never tell why.
I think the whole point of the movie is to show that the Scarab is an alien being that is beyond the human comprehension. The movie is also directly taken from the comics and if you haven't read the comics, you really doon't know a thing about Blue Beetle and why his character is the way he is. Critictize the movie until after you've seen the original material
Filmento, thank you very much for your content. I always think of your videos when I'm writing scripts. Just wanted to add that as a Portuguese myself, hearing CR7 soundbites always puts the cherry on top of a great video.
It was a huge mistake to drag Omac into Blue Beetle. Omac had potential to be a comic film on it's own. The Kirby comic book had a lot of great ideas versus the copy paste job that was Blue Beetle. Lopez screaming, and then later super competent (as well as Jaime's family) was super lame. A simple throw away line from Kord's sister would have helped. All she needed to say was "We make all our gear user friendly so anyone can pick it up and use it." The movie was disappointing. The story was weak and the directorial style felt like a Netflix tv show that was mediocre at best.

Probably wouldve helped if the DCEU didnt say this shit didn't matter right before the movie dropped, just saying.
I think it's mainly because they announced a new DC reboot too soon while they were still cranking out the DCEU fun, and because of that, people feel like the current DC films don't matter until they make their first DCU movie. Probably for the best considering at this point, the DCEU was a giant mess and making another story would just be impossible after many false hopes pre James Gunn's involvement.
They did the opposite. James Gunn said Blue Beetle is the first character in his new DCEU. So that should have helped the film, if anything. But it turned out that nothing could help this film.
no offense to you guys, but this comment is very out of touch. Most of the audience doesn't even know about the reboot, let alone who James Gunn is, and what movie is in the universe or not. Most of the movie goers just want to see funny super hero go boom. So it's safe to assume that this would never affect any sale, and only affect the hardcore fandom, who usually go watch the movies anyways
You know stuff is going further and further downhill with superhero movies when movie theaters don’t even want to show it because they know nobody will go.
Iam really really thankful you heard us and went back to narration even though it means extra effort for you Appreciate you to the end Also great video and points ❤️
As a fan of the character of blue beetle, the very first mistake they made was aging him up so much. So many of the scenes would be more impactful if he was just a kid and not an adult. Definitely not the worst film, just on the bad side of average. There were some scenes I enjoyed, but most of them didn't get explored the way I hoped they would
If you've watched Young Justice, the alien voice is actually a bit malevolent in the cartoon. It makes for a good dynamic because it's constantly trying to make him "terminate" people while he resists. I sort of wish they had gone that route instead of making it so the alien voice stopped him from doing something drastic.
What came first? Blue Beetle or Spawn?
Edit: Totally meant Venom not Spawn. I'm an amateur nerd...
Blue Beetle, by a looooong shot first appearance in the 30's, with current lore revamped in the 60s.
Spawn is from the 90s
Jaimes Reye, the Blue Beetle this film is based on, first appeared in a DC comic in 2006. There were other Blue Beetles before him, but they were very different characters.
@@Andrew-zq3ipSpawn, there was s Blue Beatle before the new one, but it didn't hsve an alien suit.
That actually interesting. Where were you when they pitched this movie.

Yeah I found it funny how Jaime so badly didn’t want to kill anyone yet his family killed a bunch of people without caring when they went to save him.
Hypocrisy: Mankind's greatest virtue.
Nah, it is Batman paradox. Till snaped head or blood is there they are fine!
Thats latinoamérica for you, Jaime goes to the second part of "Si no sirves para matar, sirves para que te maten"
Jaime is basically me.
The thing that intrigued me about this film was that his whole family knew about the super hero thing right away. That was a different dynamic than what we’ve seen before, and it did interest me a little, but with DCs track record that one thing wasn’t enough to make me want to pay theater prices.
I was just happy that they didn't spend half of the film explaining his backstory and the families like marvel has done with their recent movies and shows
Late comment, but I kinda hate the trend of "We already know about everything."
It's like how in improv there's a rule that you don't stop an idea unless you have a better idea.
Imagine the universe where instead of that Harry was like "Lol, it was super obvious that you were Spider-Man, bro."
You could see it in Far From Home where they set up an emotional scene where Peter is about to reveal his identity only to get cut-off with "I know you're Spider-Man," which is funny in the moment, but it probably would have made the movie better if we had gotten that emotional scene.

Yeayeayeayeayeayeayeayea....yeah!
I'll need you to get aaall the way off of Hollywood's back about that.
because!
So, you have a movie for me?
Reminds me of the room tommy wiseau 😂
@@syweb2 That movie is magnificent.
Exactly the hero needs to have a choice in becoming a hero or not.
Like If, in the second half jamie had the option to remove the scarab but chooses not to, that would've been great.

Blue Beetle is a guilty pleasure of mine. The film has all of the right ideas (for example, villain actually thematically fits the film, unlike Shazam 2 or The Flash if you can call it a villain).

That sounds so much more interesting than the actual movie.

You don't understand what's happening. It's over, at least for the next 10 to 20 years.
the family is the best part of the movie
I was honestly so ecstatic to hear your voice, it makes me so much more engaged in the video and the points that you raise, happy days!
What if they give it to his uncle? 😅
I think its more likely that the writers will use the whole Reach storyline to eventually give the rest of the family the other scarabs. It would totally suck but my expectations for hollywood writing are very low.
While I did not think blue beetle was a totally bad movie, I think they could’ve done things to make it stand out more.
It's not bad, it's awfully mediocre which is even worse

Great analysis again. The writers were too busy with modern identity tropes to worry about presenting an interesting well done script.
agreed. and i love representation but these fools need to also remember story.
This story isn't really built for a theatrical release but it would have been a great streaming movie.
Hollywood still doesn't know the difference though smh
Ironically it was originally made for HBO Max and not theaters.
What the difference between a story made for movies and a story made for streaming? I feel like this is just an excuse for poorly made movies
@@user-x7dc2pq7n nono, hes right. you know, in streaming movies its good when the main character cant make his own decisions because a super powerfull alien artefact controlls him fully, in a normal movie on the other hand this is very very bad. this person is an expert obviously.

Thank you! I’m tired of films claiming to want to make unique diverse stories and stick with the same tired stereotypes
That's because most of the people claiming to want to tell those stories really only know surface details in the first place.
Characters aren't people to them, they're a list of characteristics to check off.
Agreed. What stuck out for me was 90% of his family has the exact same characteristics. Loud, obnoxious, and not very bright.
@@akashafofo6939there’s no way you’re saying a generation is screwed because someone enjoyed a movie.

I thought I had created a original comic noir concept in my early 20s. Then I found out Sin City was already a thing. Right down to heavily black and white art with sparse primary colors to emphasize certain aspects. Pretty disappointed but I guess there is very little that hasn't been thought of before.
Blue Beetle was a superhero movie doing an impression of another superhero movie.
So are you going to give the example of what movie?
@@an_anime_crepe828 A little bit of Iron Man, some Ant-Man, also Shazam.
Wow I remember feeling this movie was mediocre but now I really get why
As soon as I heard that the villain was a different coloured version of the hero, I knew what to expect and was out immediately.
I have to say though, it was one of the best DC movies. The other two are the first Wonder woman and Justice League. I haven't watched other DC movies TBH.
But all DC movies IMHO in general have this major flaw in them. It all boils down to this formula:
* Drop in the story where I don't care (something happened somewhere)
* Some background story - that doesn't add to anything.
* Some more cheeky character introduction with their own background stories.
* The bad guy with their own background stories.
* Some betrayal (mostly from both sides)
* Some mcguffin thats suddenly way more important than ever told.
* The bad guy get the upper hand because the good guy isn't motivated enough.
* Some kidnapping or something toward the vain of hurting a loved one.
* Good guy goes over the edge.
* Good guy realises they are on the good side.
* Bad guy redemption / sympathy.
* Resolution (End good, all good)
* Something that contradicts the end good all good.
I honestly cannot be the only one who interpreted the whole 'red versus blue' trope in this, can I ?
That's because there is a red beetle as well which is what they were going for it seems
Just like that one Halo fan series!
Vote democrat the movie
At the beginning I immediately thought about how Alita Battle Angel did their hero introduction: A day in the life, Saving the cat, ... you immediately wanted her to succeed even before ypu knew what she needs to succeed at

Is it personal favors? Sexual favors? Nepotism? They shot darts on a board with names? WTF is happening?
I like the fast pace of everything. But then again I also believe the uncle has powers that he never says anything about (like being able to make tech work magically power).
Lol if you've ever worked with anything you know sometimes a kick to it gets the motor unstuck and let's it spin.
The way the characters talked about Ted Kord made him sound like a better protagonist, to me at least.
Side note: Jason Sudeikis as Ted Kord/Blue Beetle would be like Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man. Pretty neat.
Ah… it’s good to hear your distinct voice again in a TH-cam video.
What i am most surprised by after watching your video is that Blue Beetle has the same problem as Green Lantern, they both get their powers without a reason. They both fly around playing around without much control. Both are poorly written and their villains are underutilized. There are so many similarities, like what is DC thinking!
thats whats happen in the comics tho, if they changed the reason they got their power people would still complain either way
@@beatsbynine7922 Sure, i'm not saying the plot points should change. I am saying they could have made it interesting and that they repeated the same mistakes from GL. Saying they could not do it any other way is just lazy. The comics where popular for a reason and they should have been able to incorporate the plot points in a way that were suitable for movies.
there is alot they could change in the movie but fundamentaly the problem u have with him and gl on why they got their powers would still persist. they got their powers because they were chosen, changing it by making the villain experiment on him and force the scarab on him or something like would be deviating too much @@asbergan
I understand what you mean now, I didn;t mind it because you essentially giving a kid world destroying power so he never going to be worth it. but yeah that approach would have probably been better@@asbergan

They failed right out of the gate by making a feature movie starring an F-Tier character. As soon as I heard it announced the first thing that came to my mind was, "WHO? Blue WHO now? Who is this guy? Am I being punked?"
So they failed before they even began.

I also found it weird why the Call of Action happened so late. Jaime was just controlled by the scarab in the beginning.
I saw that movie in theatre just because there was a special a 4$ a ticket.
And I think I overpaid.
I had the impression of eating cold McDonald's.

This movie's biggest mistake was not having Danny Trejo in it. An action/comedy superhero movie with mostly Mexican actors but they don’t include him? Complete missed opportunity.

"Muchas gracias aficion. Esto es para vosotros. Siiiiiiuuu"
Didn't expect to hear that in a Filmento video🤣
It's sooooooo good to hear your voice again man.
I'll just wait until we see what's in storage for the official DCU timeline cause it can't go anywhere but up at this point.
Nah, until and unless movies directors come out and openly crtiticize WB management for destroying DC movies, nothing will change.
Nice to have your voice back, it wasn't the same without it. Great insightful video here. Keep this up. 🔥🔥
