  • Organ donation is a mystery to many people. Mayor Daniel Drew tells the inspiring story of donating his kidney to a constituent who was ill with polycystic kidney disease and reveals the truth about what it's like to give a lifesaving organ to another person. This is the reality of live organ donation from someone who experienced it. Dan Drew is the third-term Mayor of Middletown, CT and has overseen an explosion in economic growth in Middletown since taking office in 2011. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Bravo. I’m a living donor for a friend that needs a kidney and I’m considering myself an altruistic donor. I’m also an organ donor on my license. I hope to be able to pay it forward with my donation and raise awareness if I’m considered a match and start a chain. You either get it or you don’t. Thank you.

The problem is hospital staff LOOK for organ donors because all they see is viable candidates.
And it’s easy to get in this mindset when doing this kind of work for years.
So if you are on life support they bring up to the families the fact they are organ donors and most of the time the family doesn’t know any better and they pull the plug prematurely thinking “there is no hope” When met with brain damage. Aka being made into a vegetable . The brain is the last organ in the body to die.
But this isn’t to say organ donation isn’t a good thing. I just wouldn’t have it checked on my card. Or I would write in my will/ talk to my family about what I want if vegetabalized/ comatose

I am so sorry for your loss. I recently lost my daughter who was declared brain dead and was signed up to be an organ donor. At the hospital I was already aware of what they do and had my driver's license changed a couple years prior to this. While I was out of my mind crazy when the organ harvesting organization (aka vultures) showed up I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown. I definitely get that diet can affect our health and I am wondering about this explosion of kidney failure.
I am also concerned over this idea of 'receiving the gift of giving a total stranger, one of my kidneys'. Probably 100% of us who have 2 good kidneys could find another human on earth that could use it, but I do not think we should all rush out and give a kidney away.
Nature gave us 2 for a reasoon. I myself am taking it all with me, and should a day come when a doctor says I need a new this or that, then my time is is done. Not giving, not receiving, just living until I don't. Cheers

I used to live in Middletown, CT when Dan was mayor. From what I understood he was a caring compassionate guy, so when I saw him pop up under my search for "why should I donate an organ" on TH-cam, naturally I clicked on it to hear his thoughts.
I recently moved to Allston, MA, and was updating my license information to transfer, and the organ donation question popped up. Typically, I just say yes, but this time I weighed the decision more heavily. With the recent passing of my older brother (not due to the lack of an organ) 2 years ago I took this decision more seriously.
Successfully, I'm able to see Dan's altruistic and honorable choice and will check mark Yes yet again on the driver's license application.
    Thanks, Dan.

call me a pessimist or a cynic, but...
    1. all these people probably earn more than an average american
    2. they are or appear to be mostly or all white, why is this important? because they TEND to have more money than the average joe, not to say ALL of them do but, yeahhh
    3. they probably have an insanely expensive health insurance that, again most people dont have
    and lastly...
    4. The cost of:
    -medical bills
    - hospital stays
    - medication that may be given
    - lab work
    - even transpotation
not one mention of those, and again out of reach of the majority of people...
and need i remind everyone of literal TIME that poor people CANNOT AFFORD to take off to do any of these because you would have to choose between going to WORK and going to the hospital because you can BARELY get your rent and utilities paid.
I'm sure there'd be much more donations if people were getting paid to give their organs.
In conclusion I understand the need for donors and im glad everyone mentioned is ok, but for a poor person, these procedures are very much out of reach when considering their circumstances.

This is 100% the truth. I would never donate. In my city a family donated the organs of a family member who got an infection after a minor surgery which caused brain swelling so they "weren't sure he would be the same person they knew". They never said he was brain dead, just that they didn't know how he would be. You know the doctors badgered them to donate which is what killed the guy. If they can cure you for $10,000 or kill you for $20,000 they will kill you.

Dan Drew shares his personal journey of becoming an organ donor and highlights the importance of dispelling myths and misconceptions surrounding organ donation. Drew emphasizes the critical need for more organ donors and highlights the staggering statistics of patients on the waitlist and the number of lives lost due to a shortage of available organs. He also debunks some of the common myths surrounding organ donation, such as the idea that doctors won't try as hard to save your life if they know you are an organ donor or that certain religious beliefs prevent organ donation. Drew explains that every effort is made to save the life of the donor and that all major religions actually support the act of organ donation as a form of giving and charity. Drew also touches on the need for increased education and awareness around organ donation, particularly in marginalized communities where there may be cultural or historical barriers to organ donation. He encourages individuals to have open conversations with their loved ones about their decision to become an organ donor and stresses the importance of registering to become an organ donor. In reflecting on Drew's talk, it's clear that organ donation is a critical and life-saving process that requires increased education and awareness. By dispelling myths and misconceptions surrounding organ donation, we can help to increase the number of available organs and save countless lives. It's important for individuals to educate themselves on the organ donation process, have open conversations with their loved ones about their wishes, and register to become an organ donor to ensure that their legacy can continue on through the gift of life. His talk highlights the importance of having open and honest conversations about donation and dispelling myths and misconceptions around the topic. He stresses the need for individuals to make informed decisions about organ donation and communicate their wishes with their loved ones. Building off Drew's points, it's important to recognize that there are also systemic issues in the organ donation process that need to be addressed. For example, there are disparities in access to organ transplantation based on factors such as race and socioeconomic status. Additionally, there are concerns about the transparency and fairness of organ allocation systems. To address these issues, it's essential to not only increase awareness and education about organ donation but also to work towards creating more equitable and just systems for organ allocation. This may involve implementing policies to address disparities in access or improving transparency and accountability in the allocation process. Ultimately, the goal should be to ensure that all individuals who are in need of an organ transplant have equal access to this life-saving treatment, regardless of their background or circumstances. By working towards greater education, awareness, and systemic change, we can help to make organ donation and transplantation a more equitable and just process for all.

I did the same. I used to advocate for organ donation when I was in nursing school. After working in medical field for 15 years, I changed my mind for several reasons. Organ donation is being expected of people. Those who don't want to donate are being made to feel "guilty" for doing so, as if we have an obligation. Secondly, a lot of people talk about being on a list for organ donation as if organs come out of a pez dispenser, with zero regard for ethics. It's tough to see folks who have ruined their livers with meth and alcohol demand a new liver paid by others. Folks who continue to destroy their kidneys, liver, heart, while hoping someone else dies so they can get a healthy organ for them to ruin. Thirdly, this is a huge $$ maker, the medical community makes it sound sweet and altruistic of course. Why not when it's bringing in big bucks? And lastly, are all "brain dead" donors really dead? I respect people's opinion on this, and I'm happy for those who have been given extended life by using donated organs. I hope it's a long and fruitful life. However, it is my belief that this practice has a lot of ethical problems that are not being addressed. We don't have the right to expect others to give their body parts so we can be "healthy" again. We live in a world where we sugar coat death, we pay insane amounts of money to beat death, we can't accept our mortality, and we prey on the emotions of others so we can postpone the inevitable. Those of us against this practice are labeled as cruel or insensitive, there is something very wrong with this view. But...having said all that, who are we (the opposers) to say anything against this billion dollar industry? Nice TED talk though...
