The deepest song I have listened in my entire life. Year after year are still the same powerful emotions and thoughts. NIN's music is breathtaking without a doubt.
@@johncook9392 Mad wold by Gary Jules is an amazing deep track...the fact (edit: he) wrote it before facebook, twitter, and social media in general... Oscar Wilde nailed it here...enough said. Lovely track.
Right now, there are people all over the world who are just like you. They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scarred from the past, they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting here reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you dont feel alone anymore. Always remember, don't be depressed about the past, don't worry about the future, and just focus on today. If today's not so great don't worry! Tomorrow's a new chance. If you are reading this, be sure to share this around to make others feel better. Have a nice day. :)
Basically I am 30 years old, had tons of potential but squandered it all, I have been an opiate (and now heroin) addict for the netter part of a decade, but I’ve always needed something to feel “normal”, and like I fit in and feel comfortable with people. Well basically now I finally have an ok job that could lead somewhere, but I am fucking it up with my addiction, I can’t quit because it’s the only real thing on my resume. But I’m just so depressed, my best friend died three years ago, and other than my mom I have no family I am close with. I ruined all my old friendships but one and he is far away. I just feel like I had a shot in life but I blew it and that’s just how life goes sometimes and I should just give up.. idk
To all the Trent vs Johnny Cash arguments.... They both felt this song. Yes, Trent wrote it, but both of them do an outstanding performance with it. Both have an obvious strong connection with the words. If you know anything about either of them, you know its true.
+Phillip Betts I think the style in which they sing it is very different, Trent sings in the now - he regrets the things he's done recently. Johnny sounds very much like he sings like he regrets a lifetime, things that have happened over years. Probably just an age thing, but that's how it feels to me, Trent's version sounds like he has hope of changing, Johnny's sounds like it's too late to change.
+Phillip Betts Personally I think Johnny's vocals completely ruin the song. The way Trent sings just makes this song. Something Johnny's vocals just couldn't recreate.
Just enjoy both versions. Themes in common, but substantial differences too. I used to prefer Cash's cover but I've come round to this. Cash's version is simpler (not a bad thing) but the discordant bits of this song are incredible. Cash's version conveys sorrow and regret perfectly. It's much neater. Trent's original is deliberately messy and paints a picture of hopelessness and mental degeneration. Both very powerful. Maybe one resonates more with you than the other. Maybe neither do. Such is life.
Exactly it’s the same for the studio version of this song and the live version in this video. The studio version while still a powerful rendition it’s lacking the punch because they can do multiple takes if needed to get everything perfect. With the live version we see here it’s in one take so Reznor can kinda think back and visualize the mindset he was in when writing the song and tap into it. It’s a lot more raw emotion than the studio version. Same goes for the Cash cover. It was just him and a guitar on the track. As you listen to the song you can hear the pain in his voice and you can almost visualize that he is reflecting on his life as he sings. In the video Cash seems like he is about to break down and that adds to the rawness of the song. It was almost like Cash knew he would pass away soon.
Thanks Trent Reznor. Really, thank you man. This song means a lot. I love you. Thank you for making this music. I can't possibly tell you what this music means to me. It helps my life every single day. Thanks Trent! I love you brother
This is literally one of the best songs ever written. Trent is able to transport so many emotions when he is singing it on stage - unbelievable. He got through it all and shows us how it felt. Blows me away every time.
I love both versions a lot, but after listening to them both I think that I like the original NIN version because of the eerie, discordant tune in the background. It creates a more frazzled and broken atmosphere than the somber, composed sound that Cash has. Cash has a great voice and beautiful singing, but the unsettling and jarring sound behind Trent's is really what I find best for the lyrics. What a beautifully crafted, sorrowful song.
this is the version addicts hear, they still see themselves but are far from that person... Johnnys is what they feel at the end of their life/addiction, what they hear their families singing at their funeral.
Beautiful. Nice to see someone is capable of hearing the relevance in both versions rather than just tear one down to build the other one up. Both matter.
Justmiss jamey Johnny Cash was an addict for part of his life he didn’t have the same booming voice when he did this song as he did when he was younger. It was also one of the last songs he recorded and the last video he made before he passed away.

I'm 16 and I prefer this version, but I can appreciate Johnny Cash's version as well. Also, I think what you said could be applied to both versions but more to Johnny's. He applied the song to the end of his life. He's looking back on his life and regretting things that he's done.
Im 28 Ive always preferred this version but Cashs is deeply depressing because he had so many deep regrets and he passed away shortly after recording the song. To be at the end of your life and haunted by your decisions and of course impossible to undo them and only having the clarity when its too late
Valeria Miranda let me explain Rick and Morty featured this song in their emotional finale, this song was almost the last thing Rick and Morty fans heard at the end of season 2. The fans are waiting for season 3, so naturally now that they can they listen to all of the songs used in Rick and Morty. In one sentance "THIS IS OUR COMMENTS SECTION NOW BIIIIIIIITCH" Hope this helped.
Nunya Bisnuss That’s exactly why it’s a reference to the crucifixion story from the Bible. The Roman soldiers placed a crown of thorns on the head of Jesus Christ as a way to mock him and degrade him. That’s why in the Johnny Cash version it was changed to “CROWN OF THORNS”.
"I never got to meet Johnny but I'm happy I contributed the way I did. It felt like a warm hug. For anyone who hasn't seen it, I highly recommend checking it out. I have goose bumps right now thinking about it." - Trent Reznor in regards to Johnny Cash Hurt video.

Saw it live in reading 07. Didn’t appreciate, now I do!
😊
Best live performance of Hurt I've ever seen yet. Epic.
I see Trent’s version as being about the agonizing pain of drug addiction. He sings this with so much feeling..makes me cry every time.
Trents version? You mean trents original.
This IS Trent's song. Johnny Cash couldn't handle the original- changed crown of shit to crown of thorns.
Goosebumps... every time...
This track is beautiful. If you can't appreciate both interpretations then more fool you. I love them both.
Remembering a few of my touring musician friends.......long gone now.
The admiration you feel when Johnny cash covers one of your songs.
I'd like to see Thom Yorke cover this
That would be amazing!
That s good idea
Omfg yes
he should be. im tired of replaying his cover of wonderwall
Awesome sounding. Please, Thom.
When I came here:
2013:Subscriptions
2014: For Nine Inch Nails
2015: Rick and Morty
2016: Election
2017: Logan
2018: Depression
Deeply concerned that 2018 depression isn't followed by a 2019 update
Smallville too
2018: for Caroll Danvers t-shirt too
Dude I joke a lot about everything but are you okay Bro? Give us a update :)
will you come back here for 2020?? :D
Trent gets better with age, so much passion & emoting in his performances. Plus he’s still gorgeous
I feel like us young people appeal more to the Johnny Cash version but as we go through life and experience it we understand and appreciate this version more
Couldnt have said it better
They both appeal to two very different types of pain; both equally prevalent throughout life.
Very true. In my late 30s, starting to come around to this version suddenly.
God Wtf Send me here
Next two same Here!!
Lelei La Lelena Hahahah
You're welcome.
Taylor Owhh God Wtf
Next two Helloww
People unfamiliar with Rick and Morty must be so confused by the comments.
StudioInkblot Ikr
I'm really confused
Valeria Miranda let me explain Rick and Morty featured this song in their emotional finale, this song was almost the last thing Rick and Morty fans heard at the end of season 2. The fans are waiting for season 3, so naturally now that they can they listen to all of the songs used in Rick and Morty. In one sentance "THIS IS OUR COMMENTS SECTION NOW BIIIIIIIITCH"
Hope this helped.
Nice explanation XD
btw anyone who haven't watch it should try watching it,the scene that went with the song really was perfect
I'm watching it right now. It's fucking great!!!
I think the idea of the world we live in and the song and background scenes pretty much makes sense together. They go together quite well.
I get shivers everytime I hear trent sing this song
This song made me cry so damn much
When I first heard the song I though "crown of shit" was "crown of shame". Now I sing "crown of shame" because it fits me better
I love how the acoustic guitarist is holding the guitar in metal stance
27 and I now know I'll never get rid of the nightmares that paralyzed my brain continuously for so many years. Feels weird listening to this again.
Both versions give me shiver, and goosebumps! So real
Everybody goes away when they move or die or decide they don't want to be your friend anymore
best valentine's song ever
This is a drug, which helps me survive, Thank you Trent. You saved my life man..
I knew everyone would be talking about rick and morty here 😭
that's how you tell it's a good song
+Karen Barnes LOL!
+Karen Barnes Who are rick and morty?
I lost someone close to me last night and NIN was one of his favourite bands this song makes me sad but a good sad if that makes sense
Somehow, I'm glad that i've finally found a theme of my entire life, i feel just like i've been searching for this peace of puzzle or a missing brick in the wall for years and now it's completed. This song became me.
This is one of the best songs ever written
Everyone who wants to have this song played at a funeral has loved ones or has someone who cares for him/her. Me on the other hand, will probably rot in my apartment waiting to be found.
I'm sorry; I would like to do something for you, from the bottom of my soul I would like.
hey, we are alike.
Love the part where they examine him at the entrance and it says all the crimes he has commited and the list doesn't end.
So many tears. Everyone goes away. NIN never let me down or broke my heart
good god this song fit so well to the finale
Anyone else think this entire song feels like buildup without a climax?
Like life
+Free Dortch /r/iam14andthisisdeep
Visceral Void that's why I prefer Johnny cash's version. builds up to a climax.
its about heroin addiction. If you ever had someone very close to you suffer from it this song would make perfect sense.
Visceral Void the climax is death itself
I saw NIN and David Bowie do this together on a joint tour in the late 90s in NJ. Damn it seriously changed my perspective.
As someone who's often been in the depths of despair I can't bear to listen to this song
THIS is my favorite song of all time.
johnny cash did it better!
+Aliki riddle so gtfo This is Nine Inch Nails bitch
+Bunz, y'all ehm maybe Your Mother
+Martin Vojak i didnt say this was bad, i just said johnny cash did it better !
+Aliki riddle You can't compare them. They both performed it in completely different ways
if you're here because of logan and you're new to NIN, I'm jealous- listen to everything.
This track kept me out of damnation and saved me in a time I needed it. Thank you Trent.
Classic! Just back for my regular imbibe of this audio bliss!
