'One of the greatest moments of my life was standing onstage next to David Bowie while he sang "Hurt" with me. I was outside of myself, thinking, "I'm standing onstage next to the most important influence I've ever had, and he's singing a song I wrote in my bedroom." It was just an awesome moment.' - Trent Reznor

and the reason he would feel that way is because David Bowie showed everyone how important they were or great of talent they had. He was a special kind of legend that made others shine without dimming his own. One of a kind there.

So there were parts I always loved as a kid such as the little tiny guy saying 'I've got you surrounded & when the dog runs off he says 'Stop your embarrassing me in a very funny accent-I always thought it was 'Stop your embarrassing me Rufus so I named my dear dog- may he Rest In Peace-Rufus

What I love about Hurt is that the original and the Cash version are both incredibly moving and amazing. However, they are sang as two different songs. This song embodies the angst and anguish a younger person would feel. Whereas the Cash version captures a lifetime of pain and regret. It's as if they are being song by a son and then a father back to him. Also this has David fucking Bowie in it. Rad.

Your comment is so right on. My son Jimmy passed away in 2008, he loved NIN but, when Johnny Cash sang it he actually did a thesis on how one song could be interpreted by the way two people of different generations sang it.I just had to comment because it’s so true

Each is amazing in their own way, because each mean something completely different. Its a testament to how powerful of a song it is, to be sung by three amazing artists and tell three different stories. I think it's amazing the sonic blend of their voices, both such TRUE musicians and amazing talents in their own right.Trents voice slicing through like a shard of broken glass, and bowie's backing vocals smoothing the edges while allowing that grit and power to really shine through. They killed it. I love the cash version (apparently an unpopular opinion, even though trent liked it too) but this version is a FIERCE rival. so glad they both exist so I don't HAVE to ever choose. someone earlier tried to say "ohhhh this is a song about a broken man....what would christian johnny cash know of any of that...not realizing that the man in black had his own struggles with drug and alcohol addiction and quite a lurid past himself, which I believe shone through in the visceral "pain" that can be felt in his version of "hurt". But whatever... I'll listen to and enjoy both while those oh so much wiser than me critique them and voice their opinions, ever the contrarian and critic. 😂

@@estherwells2298 Johnny Cash's version seemed to me to be more about his regret & his love for June Carter & his losses but I also believe back in his days he struggled with an H addiction too-I remember watching most of the movie 'I Walk The Line I think it was called-I didn't think it would be my type of movie as I don't listen to Country music but I remember enjoying how he wore all black & went against the mainstream Gospel music at that time & he was a Rocker in his own right & parts made me cry-I can't remember how it ended so I'd have to see it again
-I remember in the movie he was married with kids but always in love with June Carter once he met her which was sad for his wife but I understood with all the time he spent with June on the road & I will say-I honestly have no idea if they ever actually got together-In his video when he covered 'Hurt I don't know if the pictures on walls are him & his wife or him & June or both but I can appreciate him singing it to both of them & being the only 1 left in the end & also driving loved ones away with his drug usage & struggles & anger & all that
I often end up loving movie biography stories like that even if I never listened to the Artist before seeing the movie-Same with 'Sid & Nancy & 'The Doors

It's beautiful seeing Trent glowing like that in spite of everything he was going through at the time. I can't imagine doing a duet with my biggest influence and not having them outshine me. Bowie backed him up perfectly, the way their voices intertwined in the choruses was mesmerizing. Instead of focusing on his own performance he gave Trent's shrill, emotional vocals a strong yet understated backbone. We need more people like that.

Awesome progression - hearing the generational versions of this song from Trent Reznor/NiN, David Bowie and Johnny Cash. A great song containing some universals truths about the human condition, and the damage we do to ourselves and to others. This song will live on longer than ever expected when it was first written.

Adrian Belew is an unsung hero here, crazy how he can play everything from funk riffs, animal/machinery noises, to the atmospheric tapping here and still sound unmistakeably like Adrian Belew.

The guitarist is Reeves Gabrels, not Adrian Belew. Look Reeves up, along with the facts of David Bowie's Outside Tour of 1995. (Adrian made his last tour with Bowie in 1990.)

The Entire Crowd LEFT when Bowie came out to do his Headline Set. It went NIN, collaboration songs between them, a break, then Bowie. The entire venue left 99%, gone, Me and my date, tripping shrooms, And my friends we're just stunned, to this day I have no idea why.

    I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
    I focus on the pain
    The only thing that's real
    The needle tears a hole
    The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
    But I remember everything
    What have I become?
    My sweetest friend
    Everyone I know
    Goes away in the end
    You could have it all
    My empire of dirt
    I will let you down
    I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of shit
    Upon my liar's chair
    Full of broken thoughts
    I cannot repair
    Beneath the stains of time
    The feelings disappear
    You are someone else
    I am still right here
    What have I become?
    My sweetest friend
    Everyone I know
    Goes away in the end
    You could have it all
    My empire of dirt
    I will let you down
    I will make you hurt
    If I could start again
    A million miles away
    I would keep myself
    I would find a way

If you watched/listened the short interview I posted right before you will understand how much I LOOOOOVE Trent Reznor's smiling @ 2:44 into the song. This is when Bowie and Reznor vocals come in together. ‪#‎RIPBowie‬
