Amaizing how Zhou got back at the race and Albon was still in the hospital.. Albon took more impact in 4 times than Zhou in this crazy moment ( and yes, thanks for the halo AND the fence!)
Albon hit a concrete wall. Zhou who's accident looked more spectacular dissipated most of its energy over the 200 or so meters of runoff and gravel before he hit the softer crash fence
It’s not the fall that kills you, it’s the sudden stop at the end. Zhou’s crash was over a long distance which dissipated some of the energy by the time it hit something. The hop at the end was probably better than going upside down into the barrier.
How he survived from that position I have no idea. The driver was lucky too. I take my hat off to you sir, very well filmed standing your ground. Balls of Steel.
It's a good thing that the bottom of the car hit the fence. Glad to see everybody is ok, including the fans. Kudos to Scott the cameraman for not flinching. Cheers from Canada.
This car's velocity when it was upside down on the smooth track surface was not reduced at all because of that halo. The single point of contact of the halo in the footage shows the reason why the blade part of ice skates are designed to support weight but with a MINIMUM contact surface area with the ice. If you replace an ice skate blade with a flat piece that has much greater contact surface area with the ice, you cannot skate as fast because the larger the contact area, the more friction. During the time that car was upside down on the track, the halo had a very small contact area with the smooth track surface. Very little friction. Although the halo 'saved' him in the final position off-track, a non-halo F1 car would have a much larger contact area with the track surface while upside down and would never have carried so much speed across that run-off area as this man's car did. And yes, F1 cars did flip over and drivers survived just fine before the halo came along. As an engineer I saw the small contact area the halo made with the smooth track surface and I thought "he is upside down in an ice skate on the smooth tract surface at very high speed" Sure enough, no speed was scrubbed off at all. The halo actually CAUSED him to retain enough speed to cross the entire runoff area and end up as he did. The halo was designed to interfere with projectiles *_when the car is upright, on the track_* It was never designed to maximize contact area/friction with the smooth track surface for 'upside down' at high speed. When you're upside down, you do not want an ice skate blade. You want all that surface area towards the front of the car frictioning-off the car's motion into heating up the track surface, and slowing the car down. That's how F1 cars, pre-halo, scrubbed speed when upside down. The air intake/roll bar behind the driver's head kept his head off the track, as it did here. They are going to have to increase the surface contact area, perhaps via a 'roof' of some type on top of the halo, in order boost the friction and slow the car down when it is upside down on the track. .
@beta male I'm an engineer - an aerodynamic foil atop and forward of the driver, mounted to and forward of the halo leading edge, might be a first step. The primary objective though is simply to recover the high friction of top-of-body contact with the road to slow the car when it's upside down. Lots of ways to engineer that onto the car and still retain the halo. You can't turn the top of the car into an ice skate like this - speed needs to be scrubbed off *AS FAST AS POSSIBLE* to reduce high-kinetic-energy impacts. The energy transfer would be from the upside-down car's surfaces into track heating.
I always tell my mates when we are trackside - stay on your feet and keep you eyes on the action. You never know when a car part shower is heading your way.

This crash looks more dangerous, but at the same time Albon crashed into the straight sidewall and had a lot more G-forces applied to him which is more deadly.

Nice capture . Well done for landscape.
"Fucking shit" indeed random crowd member!!
🌏:is he okay?
🇬🇧:fawk this shait
this is the angle we've been waiting for
I bet those in its path like that, cameraman included, didnt expect it to fly over the tyre barrier like that, probably assumed it would nestle into it. Always expect the unexpected.
By the way do you have a longer version of this video?
Wow great filming 🎥 glad all ok 👍
Great video but how do you cut it off where you did?
That "fucking shit!" Was satisfying to hear idk y
How did they extract him? Any footage?
Congratulations on your video, you were in the right place at the right time.
That fence saved about a dozen lives
That’s a lot of tiny debris in the crowd. But could have been muuuuuuch worse.
Great video. I guess the best we can get.
That was scary to watch live couldn’t imagine that seat! glad he is okay
I kept thinking about how close the fans were. The catch fence really did it’s job.
This crash looks more dangerous, but at the same time Albon crashed into the straight sidewall and had a lot more G-forces applied to him which is more deadly.
Great camera work! 👍
great that he's OK, and TOP JOB camera man!
Two years in a row we have been lucky a bunch of spectators have not been seriously injured at Silverstone. This track feels like a time bomb.
This and Spa where they have fans on the outside of quick corners like Copse and Eau Rouge.
That's some great footage mate cheers
Was that the throttle sound after he went into the fence 🤔
It sounded like it could have been anti-stall maybe or just the engine trying to restart and keep running. I'm not entirely sure. It could have been Zhou shutting the engine off.
