Will The World Give Up European Cars For Made-In-China Electric Vehicles?

  • China emerged as one of the world’s top car exporters in 2023, powered by its massive push for electric vehicles. Buoyed by years of heavy government investments, subsidies, and manufacturing rebates, Chinese automakers have flooded overseas markets as global EV demand continues to rise. In Q4 2023, China’s BYD even outsold Tesla in sales volume for the first time.
Amid the advent of Chinese brands like NIO and Xpeng, the European Union launched an anti-subsidy investigation into China’s EV trade practices in late 2023. The move prompted swift retaliation from China, sparking concerns about a trade war.

As a customer I don't care which country makes the product as long as I get value for money, if that means a Chinese made car over a European car then so be it. The EU gives out grants to companies which essentially is a subsidy, I don't see an issue for China giving companies subsidies. At the end of the day if the product is good, reasonably priced and efficient I don't care where it's made.

Yes, but you should add reliability. How does the product age and am I going to spend an arm and a leg on maintenance later on? For instance, there are plenty of horror stories about $60k bills for Hyundai Ioniq if the battery pack is damaged or needs to be replaced. The BYD EV cars could age like fine wine or like the Volkswagon Taos with its 6 recalls (including issues with overheating and the brakes). For now I'm going to just watch on the sidelines in my Toyota.

Remember, years of colonialism have brainwashed you into thinking white = superior.
BYD achieves price advantage not from cost cutting but from supplying their own batteries and also manufacturing in their own country.
If unsure, test it out yourself, do your own research, ask your ASIAN engineer friends etc. Without colonial loots and being way behind in America/East Asia in tech, Europe is collapsing.

US and EU also subsided aviation sector, and how come no one says anything. EU luxury bags and jewelry are flooding Chinese market, so does it means that China could also put a trade restriction to block all those goods to be sold inside China? The purpose of global trade is I sell you the products I made best and you sell me the products you made best. Otherwise, there is no purpose of global trade. We need a new system going forward, and I do not believe having COE for motorcycles makes sense. I would propose electric motorcycles be excluded from the COE system as they do not really contribute to traffic and if the electrical grid is using sustainable sources, it will also contribute very little overall carbon

Over the past 40 years, a range of European and American automobile companies have made huge profits from China. But China has not pursued a policy of trade protection, especially for Volkswagen, which derives nearly fifty percent of its annual sales from the Chinese market. Especially after the huge penalties of VW Emissionsgate, VW is relying on the Chinese market to survive the crisis. In its backward phase, China was extremely welcoming to foreign companies investing in China, recognizing its own shortcomings and actively learning from them. I have experienced the 1990s, when one factory and enterprise after another went bankrupt and reorganized due to technological backwardness. But when China's automobile industry could compete with European automobile companies in terms of technological accumulation, the Europeans intended to close the market. I really don't understand why Europe and the United States have double standards when it comes to natural market competition.

Not when the Chinese automakers are threatened with 25 to 60 percent tariffs. No wonder BYD is furiously building assembly lines around the world to avoid these tariffs, with new assembly lines in Hungary and Mexico coming online soon and others coming later. I also think BYD may seriously consider switching to a modular design for their EV's, which will allow the development of different models to be sold depending on the continent where the EV is sold.

Them Euro makers sure as hell not making them anymore affordable in this region.
Hence the market is wide open for Chinese EV that are fully loaded and affordable.
In the case of fast sedan BYD Seal comes to mind and it's like 3 times cheaper than say comparable BMW M340i which are not as well equipped and BYD Seal is actually faster where it matters most in daily commuting as well, off the line acceleration.

Chinese 🇨🇳 electric cars are *heavily subsidized* by many levels of Chinese government. Some people bought them, threw them away without driving, and still made profits.
    - That's why there are millions of new cars abandoned by owners across the country.
And this is not an exaggeration.

All cars in US, Europe, and Japan are all subsidized one way or the other. Don't talk nonsense. And for a non car producing country like Singapore, the more other governments subsidize their goods, the better for us. Their tax payers are lowering prices for us to buy.

Right, there are fields full of brand-new plated Chinese EVs because they were simply collecting the subsidies for the "sales". They're getting dumped in whatever market is willing to import them because Chinese consumers are largely too poor to buy and park one.

The COE system is simply flawed. With a small amount of COEs available, motorcycle dealerships can bid up all the COEs and control the pricing. The fact that they do not need to pay the full COE amount and just a small amount for Temporary COE (tCOE) makes it really broken for years. Robin Low

    • @lanlantulan
      @lanlantulan 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

indeed but COE is cash cow for someone, nevertheless it is flawed as long as it generates cash to pay the obscene salary of a group of people.
