My favorite thing about the video for this was that The Pharcyde hired a linguist to transcribe their lyrics for them to look like they were rapping to the music. He played the lyrics backwards and gave them phonetic pronunciations to use so their mouths would appear to line up with the song playing forwards. They spent days studying these new lyrics constantly to get it down. There's a good "making of" video of them practicing it.

I remember when the video for "Drop" premiered on MTV. The channel gave it a Buzz Clip rotation. This is notable because that was usually reserved for alternative rock bands.
This channel marches to its own beat, and this latest drop is no exception. Let us revere how Brandon does not merely scratch the surface but digs into music history to record the factors that make these tracks so iconic. He has a way of setting the right tone in his videos and strikes the right chords with music fans around the globe.
I’m nearing the end of Dilla Time (on audio book) having originally heard about it on your channel. Thank you so much for the recommendation, it’s a truly wonderful and insightful book and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. It’s so cool to learn so much more about one of my favorite artists and biggest inspirations.
It took me a whole journey to find this video. I saw a short about the sample then looked up the video it became a favorite song I never knew and then in the comments I saw something about this channel and I was like oh yeah let me go watch more fills videos and then I see my boy posted a video about my new favorite hidden gem. Can’t believe how blessed I am
This is deep. Thanks, i nooooooo body does it like you. I wish my best friend was alive to see this channel. He taught how to listen for samples. We would go to the record store and just nerd out. Its because of him i love hiphop on a different level. Thanks a again 👊🏿
Will sound odd, but you feel like you could ve the prototype of the big brother I always wished I had. Thanks for your amazing content and positive way of seeing and dissecting art.
Man, I love your videos. You put a lot of effort on every aspect of it that its always a joy when I receive a new video notification. Besides that, which software do you use to 'create' the videos? I plan to start a TH-cam channel and your content is my immediate reference.
I have been a Dilla fan since before I knew I was a Dilla fan ... lol yall know... but I am constatnly blown away by the depth of this cat. Its not that he was just a brilliant producer - cat was a CONCEPTUAL ARTIST! And in my experience SO deep - that even if you are unaware of the concept - you feel the 'weight' of that concept come through. THAT is ARTISTRY!
You forgot to mention that Mike D and Ad Rock also makes a cameo in the music video. Spike Jonze also did a couple of Beastie's Videos. The Connections runs even deeper 😋
Hey, since the "I dumb-i-fied my phone..." series dropped on my feed. I've been checking your channel and videos. I couldn't help but notice just how much you love your own music choices, and that passion for music is infectious. However I couldn't help but wonder why you haven't talked about one of my favorites artists. Jun Seba or as we all know him... Nujabes. I think his influence on the hip-hop genre is undeniable. And I would like to see your take on it. (Btw, this is literally my first comment on any yt video, great video.)
got here through the ipod series. first time on your regular video type. speaking of the book you mentioned. got curious what other books are there in that shelf? is there a list somewhere or a book recommendations video?
NEVER COMPLAIN ABOUT THE J DILLA COMMENTARY 🗣️🔥 also could you please cover Nujabes and his legacy of being one of the few producers that popularized chill hop.
You should have mentioned the label Delicious Vinyl because they pushed a very different kind of LA sound with artists like Young MC and even Tone Loc. They had some good years and was almost like what Def Jam was early on.
Love your channel man! I have a request... hopefully you read this and can get a video posted. J Dilla - Reckless Driving. I need to know how he made this greatness! Thanks
I actually didn’t believe Pharcyde were West coast when I first heard them. Their s-t was too cool and the production felt East coast to me. You know…BETTER!
Great video, just check your focus, it is sharp in your hands but not so sharp in your face, love your videos, always very interesting, greetings from México!
I gotta correct something: Paul Revere does not sample. “It’s Yours.” They both use TR 808 drum machines, but you can just tell them from the sonics, that they are different. “It’s yours” is heavily overdriven, to the point of distortion. And the rhythm is very different from Paul Revere, despite one being backward and being forward. Paul Revere also has a crash cymbal, that is not in “It’s yours.” What they do have in common is that they both sample “I Like Funky Music,” by Uncle Louie.
don't know why notifications went out cuz I didn't actually publish the first one, had to pull it last min because of a copyright issue that's now fixed - sorry for the mix up!
@diggingthegreats they actually had a linguist "translate" the backwards lyrics into words and syllables that would make sense and had them off screen while they were filming, then had them cheat off screen during some of the trickier parts. There's a documentary on making the video that's a great watch. Spike Jones is a genius
Never apologize for covering more Dilla. Never. ❤
NEVER!!!!
Not Digging the Greats actually being outside lol!
It’s like when you see your teacher at the mall
😂
I hope he grabbed some dumplings while he was there.

The amount of work that went into producing actually original stuff, it almost feels like a novel concept in 2024 lol
That's crazy. So much work on the details and I was like 15 just thinking "cool"

Technically rap is alternative rock innit bruv?
@@m420-nd1ifDef could make the argument Pharcyde are alternative rap
@@m420-nd1if nope. Rap is alternative Funk. Hip Hop music's father is Funk.
@@m420-nd1ifI mean you could make the argument that Rock, Jazz, Punk, Funk, R&B, and Hip Hop are all Alternative Blues.

Nice to see Dorothy Ashby love. Her box set from last year is stellar.
Every time I hang out in downtown LA I always get reminded of this song when I pass by the alleys and buildings where the music video was filmed.
Thanks for the vid! One of my fav Dilla beats and one of my fav Pharcyde songs. Pasadena I see 👀
I bought this album and ATCQ BR&L the same day. I didn't know I was falling in love with Dilla.

Will sound odd, but you feel like you could ve the prototype of the big brother I always wished I had. Thanks for your amazing content and positive way of seeing and dissecting art.
Great video. Learned so much about the samples used!
Always here for more dilla videos 🙏
😂😂. This was way too cool, Sensei. Just know we love here in Uganda(East Africa). Also, kindly never apologize for anything Dilla related.

Didn’t Rick Rubin also produce T-La Rock “It’s Yours”? That probably why he sampled it for Beasties
Came to give my love now off to the longer Patreon version. Always up for extra Dilla.

somtetimes...
And THANK YOU for hipping my to Dorothy Ashby ! Had no idea!
She is underrated!!
And proof Dilla stole this idea from him. Peep Dilla time.
Best music video of all time, literally nothing compares to the originality
Amazing vid per usual… also my fave pharcyde song of all time
I saw the notification come up, went to watch and could find it. Re-uploaded I'm guessing?

To focus on a different producer, I'll keep banging on about "Endroducing" by DJ Shadow. Such a pivotal producer album.
ALWAYS on my top ten albums list.
Mark ‘Gonz’ Gonzales cameo at the end of the Drop film clip doing the birds painting on the glass pane
That intro was sick!!!
Bro, you filmed that intro in Pasadena? I know that intersection all too well!

walking around backwards running into signs 😂

Went to see The Pharcyde, De La Soul and The Roots last week + Talib Kweli cameo. Superb gig (even with a thunderstorm)
Drop is my favourite video 👌
I started to listen to dilla with Welcome 2 Detroit and Champion Soun, but Fantastic made me a fan
Nice tribute to the video in the intro!
Love this song. J Dilla is my absolute favorite producer.
We need movie about Dilla! Greatest producer
I think Questlove is working on that based on the Dilla time book

I would die happy if he did a Nujabes video 😭
I was like "why is he walking so weird" until I saw the cars driving backwards cool stuff!

Yerrrrrrrr, Digging in the Greats! Is it possible for you to remake the 1,2, Shit beat for me...?
I believe they learned to spit their rhymes in reverse to.
could listen to dilla discourse forever
Pharsyde, Dilla and Spike Jones... Incredible time
missed an opportunity to grab the book with your right hand as you walked off screen
Do you like Mckinley Dixon? I know he doesn't use samples but would love for you to cover him
Sounds like the name of a violently racist fella
Drop is still my favorite music video

J Dilla is the greatest hip hop producer of all time. Talk about him more and more and more
Amazing thing we had no idea what J Dilla was producing for The Pharcyde
Bizarreride was hard to top but LabCabin was that and then some
Good information for producers such as myself.
I think Ad Rock is even in the video of this song on a BMX. The Spike Jonze connection...
