The Pharcyde "Drop" from the album Labcabincalifornia. Video directed by Spike Jonze.
It took three years for The Pharcyde to follow up on their debut release, Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde. Not that they didn’t keep busy in that period with supporting slots for De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest as well as a successful spot on Lollapalooza's 1994 tour. Of course J-Swift had parted ways with the group just before the conclusion of the Bizarre Ride sessions. Rather than try to out an out replace Swift, production on Labcabincalifornia was handled by the Pharcyde’s own Bootie Brown, Fatlip and Slimkid3 along with contributions from Diamond D, M-Walk and very notably the work of a recent arrival in LA, Jay Dee aka J Dilla. The resulting project, Labcabincalifornia, maybe calmer than the group’s debut but it s no less warped with stand out cuts like “She Said”, “Drop”, and “Runnin’”. The lead single, “Drop” was supported by one of the best videos ever directed by Spike Jonze and along with the above mentioned singles propelled solid sales on Labcabincalifornia ultimately securing it’s own position in the pantheon of must have records.
“If Labcabincalifornia came out today, boasting production by J Dilla on seven out of 17 tracks would be a big deal…” - Complex Magazine

GrrandSmack Labcabincalifornia has a lot of great songs. “She said” is one of my favorites from them. “Y?” is a good track, “devil music” is good too. “Runnin’” and “Passing me by” are their two most popular tracks besides “Drop”. Enjoy the music my friend!

"Controlling is a swollen way to wreck a proud mind. You hold it in your hands and watch a man start crying. Tear after tear in the puppet man's hands, every time you take a stance, you do the puppet man's dance. And the world's at a standstill, deep in broken-man's-ville, trapped in the moat with an anvil, still killing yourself, and dogging your health. You ain't amphibious, so grab a hold of yourself."

The bLind Video was probably my favorite skate video for the best year of my life in skating. I wanna say summer of 1990 or give/take.. But we mainly knew Spike as a skater as he was always in skate magazines..

My friend Tony was one of the biggest KoRn fans. Sometime in the late 90's or early 2000's we were hanging out and I asked him what Hip Hop he liked and he said "The Pharcyde and Black Sheep". At the time I had a CD Soundtrack of 'Office Space' which featured Slum Village 'Get dis Money" which made me get their album 'Fantastic Voyage Vol 2.' on CD and at the time I didn't realize J Dilla from SV was producing so many other songs, including for The Pharcyde.
It was strange before the Internet but I miss it. The only way I would have known that at the time would be to look in the CD booklets of The Pharcyde and notice in small letters "produced by J Dilla". I eventually saw both groups on tour, I think maybe even at the same concert, Rock the Bells. It was shortly before Baatin passed. RIP Tony, J Dilla, Baatin.

And it came out when i was 23 years old, thanks to hip hop my teens and throughout my 20's was the best time of my life. At least artists like The Pharcyde played a role in making it great. The first part, is filmed on "St Vincent ct" alley way where "Garos Deli" is,
The second part, where the big theatre sign is showing and the beasties boys cameo is, that street is broadway "Los Angeles theatre" (the st Vincent alley way is right behind this)
The ending part, where they past the flourist and hotel, that hotel is called "Alexandria hotel" on 5th street, the (flourist is out of buisness)
And the alley way where they go in and get wet and have a gonz painting at the end is a alley way right accross the hotel, its closed off to the public now

    Lyrics
    Let me freak the funk,
Obsolete is the punk that talk more junk than Sanford sells
I jet propel at a rate that complice their mental state
    As I invade their masquerade
They couldn't fade with a clipper blade
10 years in the trade is not enough, you can't cut it
I let you take a swing, and you bunted
For an easy out, I leave mc's with doubt
Of exceeding, my name is Bottie Brown and I'm proceeding, leading,
They try to follow but they're shallow and hollow
I can see right through them like an empty 40 bottle, of O.E.
They have no key, or no clue
To the game at all, now they washed up
    Hung out to dry
    Standing looking stupid, wondering why
    (Why man?)
It was the fame, that they tried to get
Now they walking around talking about represent
And keep it real, but I got to appeal
Cause they existing in a fantasy when holding the steel
    Rock a bye baby,
Listen to my heart pumping to a fine ravine
Of all things it's a vain of a shrine
All missions impossible are possible, cause I'm
Heading for a new sector 365 days from now, I'll
Wipe the sweat from my brow
And each and every true will stick, or fall from the sky of my cloud nine
From homies all the way to chics, no matter how fine
Controlling is a swollen way to wreck a proud mind
You hold it in your hands and watch a man start crying
Tear after tear in the puppet man's hands
Every time you take a stance you do the puppet man's dance
And the worlds at a stand-still
Deep in broken mansville, trapped in the moat with an anvil, still
Killing yourself, and dogging ya health
You ain't amphibious, so grab a hold of yourself
Shit is-shit is ill, my flow still will spill
Toxic slick to shock you sick like electrocute
When I execute, acutely over the rhythm
On those that pollute, extra dosages is what I gotta give em
    Got em mad and trembling
Cause I been up in my lad assembling
    Missiles, to bomb the enemy
Because they envy me, and the making of my mad currency
Currently I think we're in a state of an emergency
Cause niggas done sold their souls, and now their souls is hollow
And I think they can't follow
They can't swallow, the truth because it hurts
This is how I put it down, this is my earth, my turf
The worth of my birth is a billion, and you know what time it is
I'm going to make a million
