totally @diggingthegreats, it's interesting and informative even if I know a lot of the background. You have a knack for putting into context, keeping it fresh, thanks dude! All the best from Morocco, Sean - www.youtube.com/@ketama047
I've been digging into hip-hop history for a while now, but you're contextualizing it in a way that's accessible and engaging. I appreciate you man. Keep it up!!
As a fellow hip-hop channel owner and as a fan, I have to give you much respect on the content you make. The humor, the stories, the research. It's all super dialed in. Your success is well earned!
I've used TH-cam as my primary entertainment platform for something like 8 years, have subscribed to well over 100 channels. Yours is the first that made me think "Let me hit that notification bell. I'd hate to miss even _one_ upload"
just got recommended this video.... used to hear runnin as a kid but i couldnt find it for almost 2 decades, and now not only have I found it but ive also found it dilla made yet another song I absolutely love
J Dilla is the greatest producer of all time no question. the fact that 29 of the 31 tracks on Donuts was produced in the hospital with an SP-100 is just unbelievable to even imagine. That seals it for me.
@@vertical_parallelIt's not very sad , we were blessed with his gift for as long as we could AND MANY TREASURES HE LEFT US. It's obvious he was born on a MISSION 😊.
@@gabeeskridge8291 Nice spin on the story bro but yea It's still sad. Dude was 32 years old and was monster of creativity and dedication... as well as just an all around good dude. He had waaaay more to grow sonically and bless the world with his gifts.
I love Dilla but the original story isn’t even that he used a SP-100. It was a 303. Also, the newest biography of his life details that the album was actually made in Pro-Tools by Jeff Jank while working off of 10 beat CDs that Dilla made.
I’m so glad we have someone technically breaking down Dillas work in such a professional series. I’m just now finishing his entire production discog, and I can’t wait to start trying to reprod some of these. Hope there’s many more to come!
My guy, this is great content. Your soulquarians video got me to subscribe but every video is mind blowing to me. I have a lot of respect for what you do here. Thanks for it.
Fun fact: "Saudade vem correndo" means something like "the missing feeling (from someone) comes running". This translation is hard to do because saudade does not have an accurate translation. The fun fact, is that "correndo" means "Running". Source: I'm brazilian.
Great storytelling as always! Sidenote: was suprised to read in Dilla Time that T3 was the one who "discovered" the Stan Getz & Luiz Bonfa loop used in "Runnin". Definitely deserves some credit for that! 🙌
Quickly becoming my favourite channel. Came across one of your videos a few months back and have been looking forward to new drops ever since. Keep up the great work. Big fan here in Dublin, Ireland.
Somebody here said it best. Since discovering this channel my APPRECIATION for incredible music made by incredible people edited so smoothly by an incredible man has grown massively
this channel is just a gem. its incredible how much information, love and style you put into this videos. thank you very much for this, every video is just a banger
Unreal content. Been hooked since your first video. I think you’re the algorithm’s wet dream, because the channel is blowing up. No doubt you’ll have 2M subscribers in a year.
It's amazing what a simple and even standard idea it is to turn off quantization and play in drums by hand, the way music had ALWAYS been made, but JD is the first guy to buck the trend of an entire genre and do it on a major release. That's not to take away from his brilliance, but it just takes one guy to go, "I I think I'd rather do it this way" for everyone to see the possibilities. You're doing a great job on this channel. I'm duly impressed.
When I was a kid my cousin died and left us his equipment, we had a Korg keyboard workstation but the loop didn’t work it was a malfunction. We had to play the drums and every sound for like 3 minutes, we had to count bars in our heads for the chorus 😂😂😂😂
Thank you so much for the history rundown - I've been listening to this track a ton after I discovered it for the first time around 3 years ago, but never knew the story behind the crew. It's one of my top songs of all time and means a lot to me, so listening to it now will be wild knowing the story behind everything

Dude, these videos are absolutely incredible. I discovered your channel about 4 hours ago and have just been flying through your content since. Extensively researched, authoritatively presented, and edited in a way that makes the pieces flow beautifully, this really is a goldmine of musical knowledge. @andyboi8283 Must not listen to alot of Hip-Hop. The emcees spitting bars are subpar. Two things come with a good Hip-Hop song. The Beat & The Rapper. Pharcyde lacks good Dope Rhyme Sayers. Nothing too amazing. You should try listening to Nas, Mos Def, Big Pun, or André 3000 (Outkast)

Your videos are my most amazing find of channels. Not only do you work through my life of music interest. Fillin the gaps I’ve never understood. And the editing quality is world class. I've been trying to cover this song on drums and that kick pattern is not easy! It's awesome to see it mapped out like this. I also didn't know this was a Dilla Beat, but wow, to me this thing solidifies him as a legend even more. The drums on this beat are crazy.
Man, hell yeah, I'm glad someone is gassing up this track for the here and now. I haven't even watched yet but lowkey I thought you meant how the drum kicks swing has that thump that just sounds like it's trading back and forth, didn't know that there was a real fight on it tho! 👀

fun fact: dilla actually would quantize a lot of his drum patterns, or at least parts of them, and would edit them by hand to make things land exactly where he wanted them. like on a lot of his beats where the snare hits a little early, he programmed them to line up with the grid and nudged them back a little bit in the editor to make them all consistently early. A lot of people think not quantizing your drums is how to get the same feel as dillas beats, but theres actually a lot more to it than that.
I love the Pharcyde. Could you do a video breaking down all the borrowed clips they've used and all the other artists that borrowed the Pharcyde's style?! That would be awesome!
