    Mint.
If this happened on the other side, am I better off throwing a straight left or stick with the right cross?

LeeR you'd be trapping the leg with your right hand, so...yeah left

TheMrthatdude17 I was thinking that... thanks bro

I prefer to pull the leg out on the right side, pull my opponent towards me with my right hand and then throw a right hook/overhand while he's still coming forward. Works on both sides. But on the other side with the left of course.

Alphaone99 thanks dude. I should have said a left cross (southpaw). I was playing around with this technique last night. I sometimes caught the right kick, passed it over to the right side of my body, let go, then throw a right cross (but the option for the sweep isn't isn't there)

Yeah, it's a very powerful technique. I've seen Buakaw use it fairly often against teeps. You know, catch under the heel and then pull the leg out to the side.

The coaches at my MMA gym always tell us to step away from the kick as we catch it. It takes some of the power off the kick when you do that. I noticed he didn't say not to just block too many kicks also, still great video!

jaguarpawz yeah I think I agree. Some good points in this video but I wouldn't try catching kicks like that. It's just too much risk for that point of the arm to be dealing with a full speed shin.

Against hard, fast kicks thrown with full power, this is not ideal, true. But sometimes you just don't have time to move before the kick lands, so then it's better to do this then to just eat the kick. Also, not all kicks are done at 100%. Sometimes your opponent will throw sloppier kicks because he's tired or off balance. Then this can also work.

Alphaone99 yeah I'm sure there is a time and place for this. I just think it's not a great default because even if your arm doesn't break when you face a kick to the body, I'm pretty sure you're gonna want to be blocking with both if it's aimed for your head.

Well if the kick is aimed for the head I find it better to lean back quickly instead, thus avoiding the kick completely. Sets up for great counters as well. Also, note that he's only doing it against the left kick in this video, and since most orthodox fighters' left kick isn't as hard, it might very well work.
