  • Can a holistic protocol address the root cause of autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS)? We explore how metabolic health is tightly linked to autoimmune diseases and how understanding blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity is key. Dr. Terry Wahls developed The Wahls Protocol, which helped Dr. Wahls reverse her disease process and helped her get back on her feet. The Wahls Protocol is one of the most influential lifestyle programs that helps people address their autoimmune diseases.

My daughter was diagnosed with MS in 2014. She called me as soon as she found out. I said, "Don't do the standard treatment for MS. I read a book by Dr. Terry Wahls......." She has controlled her MS through diet alone. Her neurologist was amazed but still wanted my daughter to do as she was told for her MS. She has stayed the course of the Wahls Protocol for a decade. Her brain lesions have shrunken drastically. She is well and happy. Thank you Dr. Wahls for your story. It saved my daughter's life.

I was diagnosed with fibromyaalgia 2013 here in Ireland 🇮🇪 and their only solution here is anti- depressants and I have refused as I believe it is masking the issue . I also have started the menopause and I find it extremely difficult to live my previous life and am still looking for a solution 🤯 I'm living in chronic pain , all day, every day. The HRT gel that I've started taking 4 months ago seems to have taken the edge off the emotional roller coaster but the chronic pain remains. 🙏Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. Listening from Ireland 🇮🇪 ❤☘

Loved this video, however ....kind of disagree on starting with stress control/meditation first. I have found that once I cut out all sugar, processed foods that the way I reacted to stress was so much better. The diet (way of eating) cleared my brain fog so that I could concentrate more in prayer,/ meditation.Every aspect of my life improved after a month of healthy eating.... Clearer brain, tons of energy, better sleep ...just to name a few! Age 63 , dropped 45 lbs in 6 months and feel 20 yrs younger!

good point! however in the case of a family member I have, I think that this person needs to calm down enough via meditation just to get to the grocery store and just to be able to think more clearly w/o being in fight our flight/PTSD, therefore for this person it is needed to meditate before they can even leave their house. I'm sure you don't have anyone in your life in this PTSD hyper condition, so I wanted to point it out. but thankfully going to diet first is best for most of us!! peace.

48:17 I had to go have the same conversation with the chief of medicine at the university
who said "Terry, you're going to lose your license
because all we need is somebody to file a anonymous complaint, you'll get inspected,
and you'll be inspected by people who don't believe in functional medicine integrative medicine.
So, you need to LEARN HOW TO TALK ABOUT THIS"...
So, I became very clear with my patients, with the public that
    "I'm focused on creating health,
we're going to really focus on modifiable lifestyle factors,
and we'll see how much what your body can do with that.
I'll have to watch you closely for your blood pressure, your blood sugar,
and your current medication use so you don't become over medicated.
but we're going to focus on creating health using these basic lifestyle principles."
And when I shifted HOW I SPOKE TO MY PATIENTS that way, the residents quit getting complaints.
And when I focused MY CLINICAL NOTES that way, I quit getting complaints...
That language will feel very comfortable to our conventional colleagues and very respectful.
As soon as I say "I'm treating MS with diet and lifestyle,"
that's not FDA approved and that can be sanctioned,
and that will NOT pass peer review...
And so, we have to be careful that we teach our our functional medicine practitioners
how to talk about this in a way that
    respects conventional medicine,
    respects the patients,
    RESPECTS THE HEALING PROCESS,
because what we're doing is we're creating health,
and as a side effect, sometimes not always but sometimes
you REGRESS A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF PATHOLOGY as a side effect of creating health.

I think it would be wonderful if somebody could invent a tool for people to measure/track their insulin levels; just like a glucometer does for blood sugar. As I understand it, by the time your blood sugars become consistently high, you’ve been insulin resistant for awhile & are well into metabolic illness/cellular damage. Such a tool combined with all of Dr. Wahls protocols could be so helpful exposing/reducing insulin resistance.

@Canterbury Tales I cut out sugar and most carbohydrates except leafy green vegetables. I stick to water, coffee and a moderate amount of alcohol (initially i cut out alcohol). I guess it depends on how bad the RA is, i went from 20mg injections to 5mg tablets over about 5 years. There is some evidence that a carnivore diet may help with severe RA. I guess if you can reset your system, you can they try reintroducing foods to see what effect they have. It's not easy but a lot less difficult than all the problems associated with RA and the side effects of mtx Lots of good stuff on TH-cam by Dr Berry, Jason Fung, Ekberg, lustig, Mikhailia Peterson etc....

Soap girl, I agree. I did well in 2019, as I reduced my levothyroxin from 175mcg to 100mcg. I got so confidant and gave up the medication. I was getting so tired that started to eat all the time and this did not work, so went back to thyroxine with a test which camevon 100mcg. I am now on thyroid healing protocol, so no dairy, eggs, gluten. I have not had gluten for 12 years as I am coeliac. Once I am healed, I shall go on keto diet. I have about 2 meals a day now, but also 2 to 3 days a week just juice/smoothie and avocado. The lunch time is proper meal with protein and veggies. In the evening a light meal like smoothie or avocado.

A wonderfully informative and inspirational podcast, thanks so very much. Massive respect to you both. Look forward to the results of the new study! My mum has reversed her pre-diabetic state and lost over a stone following all the low carb/time restricted eating etc advice I have been passing on to her: I've spent the last 2 years reading and watching as much as I can to be properly informed about health. Nevertheless she is still somewhat paranoid about the possibility of dementia and Altzeimers, and I think reflects a generational attitude that bad health is often just bad luck (= genes), and all you can do is just worry about it and take the drugs the doctor hands out. I want to have the scientific understanding to take control of my own wellness. Bad stuff can still happen, but if I have the conviction that I am making sound lifestyle choices and doing my best to respect my amazing cells, I can stop feeling powerless about what the future might be like. I shall be forever grateful to people like you.

I also wonder, at what point is the cost of so many medications, nursing care, testing, etc, for chronic illness-- to little effect, in my mind (recent home care experience for poor areas left me astonished)--at what point is the cost going to equal sending a person away to a spa like atmosphere with perfect food, community, nature, stress reduction, etc. . . I think we are getting close! Think of the clients seen regularly by home care nursing . . . on sometimes 20!!!!! meds, (costly "new" meds where chemicals were tweaked to re-patent), getting frequent home care visits for horrible wounds (not a vitamin in sight most of the time) and frequent ER visits and/or hospitalizations, where the 20 meds are rearranged, supplies such as complex wound bandaging, visits from specialists of course, either in the home, or office, wound care centers, social work visits, and still, in my opinion, people suffering with pain and depression, anxiety, no stool tests for microbiome check, no real nutrition, no teaching of meditation ( I did my best) no RX like orders from MD to eat right, even. . . at what point does the cost equal sending to wonderful healing retreat? I think we are already there for the chronically ill. . . and yet, if not recognized as a treatment, no matter what the economics, for the poor at least, this will not happen. It is a fundamental flaw in the way we think non inclusively, everything is connected of course, and in a way, a sudden event, decline in health can be seen as "the straw that broke the camel's back." We focus on the one straw not all the other straws, because it is difficult to study all the other straws and come up with the magic bullet.

It depends on the person, how bad insulin resistance is, and what means are used to lower it (are you just relying on low carb or are you fasting as well, how long are you fasting, do you exercise etc). You could take a fasting insulin test periodically to determine if it’s going down.

This is interesting. I'm predisposed to approve of a diet that has no grains in it. I looked up her protocol though and saw that she doesn't approve of nightshades, which are among my favorite. :( I do question her love of leafy greans (another favorite of mine) because of the oxylates and leptons.. Still her's makes more intuitive sense to me than the Swank diet which is LOW FAT, low animal protein and high in grains... WHut? In the end, I think we're on the right track when we focus on inflammation and also suspect we'll find diets need to be tailored to the individual. I'm still eating salads, lol.

    • @LauraB.335
      @LauraB.335 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Meat is anything but inflammatory. Many with autoimmune resort to carnivore, because anytime they eat plant material, they get inflamed. Many also use beef and water as an elimination diet, then slowly add stuff back in to determine what impacts their health. Carbs processed foods, sugar, and vegetable/seed oils are what are inflammatory.
Meat has never been inflammatory. Researchers have lied to support their hypotheses (Ancel Keys) and to cover up for the sugar industry.

I named 3 items any one of which a person could live on. I think that qualifies as nutrient dense. You could pack a salad with every fruit and vegetable under the sun and you still couldn't live on it. I think that's called nutrient deficient.
I suppose there are some people who would consider a glass of high fructose corn syrup nutrient dense. Or possibly a glass of olive oil. If you Google it you will find it means, "having a high vitamin and mineral content in relation to its weight."
If a person has health issues don't just sprinkle eggs on top of your salad. Sprinkle some salad on top of your eggs.
I love listening to her story but she's been trying to heal herself with one hand tied behind her back. That's why I asked, why not go nutrient-dense and see what happens?
She started with supplements and then tried to find vegetables that had some of these nutrients... And the best she can tell her patience is try it for 3 months and you might see some improvement? I think that's completely unacceptable.

but sad Dr. Wahls had to " learn how speak" about natural healing. . . in a world where natural medicine always was (since flexnor report) sidelined, and people vilified. . . atta girl? vomit. the truth will out, but sad we still have to play the game. Also, as a nurse, since my first day working in the hospital, as many others do, I think about why we are all so sick. . . toxins, yes, the way we grow food not naturally, yes, the missing soil biology and thus plants deficient as we are yes, too many medications, harm to gut microbiome yes, stress, etc. . . but WHY can't we even question VACCINES as also contributing to chronic illness, especially auto immune issues. . . vaccines which have also risen in number since WWII? Especially in light of links between auto immunity and, well, the immune system of course, innate immunity, etc. . . and where is the research on what effect vaccines have on the gut? I only find the accepted converse: how a healthy gut microbiome enhances the effect of vaccines! I asked my sister who is a veterinarian, to do a quick little study before and after stool samples of dogs /vaccinations, and of course she was not interested, or perhaps did not have the time. Another question: WHY does using food as medicine have to be FDA approved??

I am sorry, but I just can't take listening to the entire presentation, much to my regret. I just cannot stand three and four UH's in every sentence... it drives me crazy. Sad. I wish they could be edited out.

Have you tried muting the audio and turning on subtitles? I have a similar aversion reaction, not with the "uhh" sound, but when I hear others chew their food with those open-mouthed, loud smacking sounds.
