  • The Source of Our Most Challenging Epidemic
As you may recall, the last time we had the opportunity to interview Dr. Robert Lustig was when he published The Hacking of the American Mind, elucidating how the processed food industry has hacked our bodies and minds to pursue pleasure over happiness, fueling widespread addiction and depression. I'm excited to let everyone know that we again have the opportunity to feature Dr. Robert Lustig on the podcast talking about his new book METABOLICAL. This new work addresses nutrition, food science, and global health, and explains how by focusing on real food we can reverse chronic disease and promote longevity. For the first time, all strands of this pandemic-the medical, the economic, and the environmental-are pulled together into one clear narrative. And to be sure, the pandemic we are referring to is the pandemic of chronic, noninfectious, preventable diseases, not COVID-19.
Describing the eight pathologies within the cell that belie all chronic disease, Dr. Lustig illustrates how they are not “druggable” but rather “foodable” (i.e. medication can’t cure what nutrition can) by following two basic principles: protect the liver, and feed the gut. He uses this science to chronicle the breakdown in our current healthcare paradigm, which has succumbed to influence from Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government. In the special chapter “Food in the Time of Corona,” Dr. Lustig addresses the way “pre-existing conditions” (i.e. diet-induced chronic diseases) make us vulnerable to succumbing to acute infectious diseases like COVID-19. He also argues that the Nutrition Facts label hides information from the consumer by omitting what’s been done to the food, which is more important than what’s in the food.
Weaving together the interconnected strands of nutrition, disease, medicine, environment, and society, METABOLICAL provides the scientific bases for a series of iconoclastic revelations, among them:
Medicine for chronic disease only treats symptoms, not the disease itself
You can diagnose your own biochemical profile
Processed food isn’t just toxic, it’s addictive
The war between vegan and keto is a false war-the combatants are on the same side
Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government are on the other side
    ====
Our guest, Robert H. Lustig, M.D., MSL, is professor of pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology and a member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies at University of California, San Francisco. He has authored 120 peer-reviewed articles and 70 reviews. He has mentored 30 pediatric endocrine fellows and trained numerous other allied health professionals. He is the former chairman of the Obesity Task Force of the Pediatric Endocrine Society, a member of the Obesity Task Force of the Endocrine Society, and a member of the Pediatric Obesity Devices Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He is also the president of the nonprofit Institute for Responsible Nutrition, dedicated to reversing childhood obesity and Type 2 Diabetes. He consults for several childhood obesity advocacy groups and government agencies.

True but running saved my life. I ate very unhealthy growing up. My Mom was too sick to cook by the time I was 10. My brother and I lived on sugar cereals, cookies, and TV dinners.
Had tonsils removed at 10 years old. I knew nothing of health. I got colds and flu's every year. God touched a classmate in junior high to invite me to run track. He thought I was a good runner after seeing me run in gym. I started running the mile with him. Then ran both mile and 2 mile races in High School. Looking back I think I would have been dead before I was 30 if it wasn't for him. I was very shy. Running really helped me. What I hate is if I would have known about healthy eating I would have probably been a state champion. But I always ran out of energy. I wasn't out of breath. My body would not cooperate with my drive. I was fast. I practiced hard. A little story. 😄

I just ordered the book. I first started looking at nutrition as a possible treatment for my medical issues a little over a year ago. I love my doctor (he diagnosed a rare hereditary disorder that most likely resulted in my mother’s premature passing and gave me back the past 30 years when no other doctor could help me), but he doubted my efforts would do anything to get me off of my many meds. However, no only did I open my own eyes, but I caught his attention too. I’ve spent my time on a quest to exert all my efforts on reducing my insulin levels. That was my focus and it has resulted in me dumping 75 pounds and becoming much more metabolically healthy. In fact, I no longer require any of my prior prescriptions. He is not yet convinced that I can sustain this, but I am now under his microscope. He commented, “You should write a book if you are able to maintain your progress!” - my response to him was that there are already hundreds of them written, we just have to get people to read them!

You don't have to keep to the party line now that you're retired. But just think of how many do. . . medical research and Big Pharmacy are bzillion $ money makers in the US. They have a vested interest in keeping Americans of all ages sick. The food industry is in bed with them to make it all happen. Innocent little kids are eating horrible food. I fed my kids in the standard American breakfast fare, and ate at myself. But as they say, "When we know better we do better." Health research is a fave pastime. At 69, 5'1" I once reached 230 lbs. I'm down 45 and working on the next 30. Plant-based with some meat, limited dairy. Using time-restricted eating. Normally one meal per day. If I'm extremely hungry I eat, but Im less hungry eating this way. Yes, I have the occasional treat, but once you aren't eating sugar and snacking you'll find you crave it less and relish 2 cookies more than you used to when you ate a half bag down during a binge . . . barely tasted it, and still wanted more.

@@jr.6199 I respectfully disagree. Nurses save lives daily without risking their lives, and I still consider them heroes. Dr. Lustig saved many lives by bringing the attention of the public to the detrimental effects of sugar, specifically how it was effecting the pediatric population. There are many parents out there who now think differently about feeding their children sugary foods. He impacted society in a positive way and not many can say that. I am so happy to say this, I was diagnosed with Herpes simplex virus 1 & 2 seven years ago I lived in pain with the knowledge that I wasn’t going to ever be well again because my family Doctors and the dermatologist told me that there was no cure, but I needed to be normal and get my life back. I contacted so many herbal doctors I came across on this issue and wasted a large sum of money but my condition never got better I was determined to get my life back so one day I saw Mrs. Carol's post on youtube under a video titled "How to get rid of Herpes virus Fast". and how Dr.Aloha saved Her from HSV2 with his Natural Herbal medicine. I contacted Dr.Aloha through his email:
Alohaherbalhome@gmail.com we spoke on the issue I told him all that I went through and he told me not to worry that everything will be fine again and that he will help me. so he prepared the Herbal medicine and sent it to me through UPS courier delivery service with instructions on how to use it, I got the package just within 4 days as promised and after 14 days of usage I went to see my doctor for a test, Behold the results came out Negative to Herpes 1&2, I am so thankful to God for using Dr. Aloha to cure me of this stigmatized disease. I highly recommend this method to anybody suffering from Herpes or any other disease, you can also call/text: +1(202) 871-3222,

Metabolical is a great eye opener of a book! I underlined so many things in it. My copy is well annotated now! I keep hoping Bill Maher will book Lustig for his show. Bill has been talking about the obesity epidemic throughout the Covid Pandemic. I know he is hard to like and its easy for him to say since he is small and skinny but he has echoed what Dr. Lustig said at the end of this podcast about how people who are obese and diabetic are much more likely to get really sick and die from Covid 19. Its simple biology but we don't have good explainers on our televisions. Too many of the doctors who are interviewed on news shows basically tell people to believe them because they know better but they fail to explain to the audience WHY. Dr Lustig is a great explainer of WHY!

Both these Doctors are great to listen to. They take complex processes and reduce them to simple explainations.
Plus, they've got the orchestra stalls to disagree with their colleagues and be strong in their own beliefs.
    More power to them!

    • @hunterscollectors673

I very much agree and in my research over 25 years I felt vaccines and leaky gut were the most likely culprit. I gave out 50,000 vaccines as a Navy medic during the Vietnam War and was very skeptical of them at the time. I personally have taken no flu shots or other vaccines in 55 years and very healthy today at 78yo (run 100K trans appinies) Started having arthritis like symtoms in right hand 2,3,4,5 finger-second knuckle. This is one of the first evident sign of impending auto-immune reaction. I did the gluten antigen test-- 7 1/2 times maximum limit. Now I am on Gluten free, ketogenic, low sugar,no fast food, cook like my Grandmother---"Sad" but if you have one auto-immune condition you are likely to acquire more. After 6 months on diet hand has improved about 50%, from not being able to cut cheese and frequent finger cramps to no cramps and can cut cheese with some effort and pain. I think some people have a increased genetic propensity to Autism/Auto-immune,leaky-gut disease and some stressor activates a dormant gene, Vaccines is probably number one, then leaky-gut,gluten intolerance, excessive sugar consumption.

Hi! I have a psychology degree and I can say there are no causes of autism related to diet or vaccines. The only cause of autism is genetics!
The reason why the numbers of autism have increased so much in the last 20 years is simple: before the 2000', we didn't know much about that condicion and there were lots and lost of misdiagnosis. What changed was the access to and proper diagnosis :)

They don't really teach nutrition in veterinary school. Vets have been brainwashed by the dog food industry that processed kibble containing foods completely foreign to dogs such as corn and wheat and by products that even humans can't eat and with a shelf life of a year is safer than a natural home diet.
I have just been learning about this subject and started feeding a home made diet and can already see the difference on my dogs.

I just finished watching (listening) to this interview and immediately purchased the book. I hope to read and re-watch and have some notes for my next labs ... I know my Dr. will love that :). A co-worker introduced me to the UCLATv "Sugar" video ... in fact, 5 of us from all over the U.S. who work as a team (software development), all watched and have discussed. I just now sent them the link to this talk. I have been on the "real food" train for many years - love to cook, am a "scratch" cook. I think your thumbnail had the Hippocrates quote (partial): "Let food be thy medicine..." (it goes on "and medicine be thy food"). Physicians still take the Hippocratic oath, don't they ?? And yet, as you noted and as I have experienced as a patient ... nutritional guidance is hard to come by in the "Dr's office". BUT, I think we patients have some responsibility for that also as too many of "us" just want a pill to fix whatever. As Dr. Perlmutter suggested, ending on a high note - thank you both for all of the information given and explained in this talk.
