Playtime for the Babies of the Herd and Matriarch Tokwe | Lessons from Carers Owen and Joshua

There's a lot happening on the sand mounds today! Matriarch Tokwe lets down her hair, much to Khanyisa's delight. The young calf is all over Tokwe, while youngsters Pisa and Timisa play nearby and Bubi keeps an eye on everyone. Khanyisa enthusiastically starts digging her little tusks into Tokwe's back, but this turns out to be more fun for her than for Tokwe.
We also get some elephant lessons from carers Owen and Joshua, who share insights on elephants, their love of soil, and their playfulness.
Owen explains:
"Most of the time when elephants find a place like this, they just like to hang around. The ground is wet. It's nice and playful. So it's like, they come over together and group up. And then you'll see some young ones - it gives a nice impression to the young ones also, to lie down. But before the young ones lie down, you can find there will be one adult just lying down. Just showing the baby that the place is nice, we can play, we can have some fun. You can see the mother will be close by the young one, will be digging the sand to loosen up the ground to be more soft.
Throwing the sand, for elephants it's a habit. It's more common that we really know that mostly when they're throwing the sand it's for cooling off themselves, from the sun. You know, when they put a lot of sand on their back, when the sun's come out and it's started burning, then it would be burning on the sand and not the skin itself. Then somehow there's a kind of a habit of playing to get prepared for when the sun comes out. But now we have got some mist. So they're throwing the sand, I think they just get ready for when the sun comes out.
The elephants also, they've got a time for them to play. Not always that they'll just be eating and eating and eating. They can have their time to play, exercise each other. Lying down, the young ones come and climb over their mothers."
Joshua explains:
"Elephants, with soil, they have a big bond. Because they have certain times when they use soil in different ways. It's like, when it is warm, sometimes we see they put on themselves mud. And when it is like this, they just like dry soil, to use it. Don't know for what reason. Mostly it's cold now, so they use the soil, maybe to warm them. Because when they use mud, it's like we say, they are cooling themselves with mud. So with soil, maybe they are just warming them up.
Sometimes when they're playing with soil like this, we see they take that soil and eat it also. ['For minerals,' Adine adds.] They use it for many purposes. On the other hand, they are like they're gymming."
Heartwarming to see Tokwe take a rest from her matriarchal duties. So well deserved Lady! ❣️

The more HERD videos I see, the more I wish all zoo elephants can be freed to be in sanctuary, at least, since the wild is still so dangerous for them.

I was a little surprised to see Tokwe actually lie down and take a rest. That was nice, until Khaneyisa started pocking her in the back with her growing tusks. All play no doubt, but little Miss Sunshine would like her spot back, haha. Thank you Owen and Joshua for sharing your knowledge about this wonderful young Herd; and of course, many thanks to Adine.
I thought it was only me seeing pink princess poking Tokwe in the back as tokwe shamelessly pushed her out of her space😂😂😂❤❤❤

Tokwe looked like she was about to fall asleep as soon as she laid down. I love seeing them all so relaxed, I could watch them all day. 💜💜🥰

AWWWWW timi's eyes are SO BEAUTIFUL, you can really see them here... just beautiful all of them feeling at peace and relaxed.. so nice to see mama tokwe get some playtime in to, she has a child like heart still its obvious, those babies give her so much pride and purpose you can tell

What a beautiful video of this group hanging out. Tokwe was so relaxed and Khanyisa got to explore parts of her mother that are too far up in the air to touch very often! What a wonderful scene. Thank you for the posting and your care for these precious animals!

Notice a couple of things. Tokwe relaxing on her role as matriarch enjoy the sand and have a great time, the youngsters feel safe and protected been with her. Also Khanyisa is completely a part of the herd now. She's not an orphan anymore. She acts as if she were born in the group. Being the youngest they adults watch over her and protect her like any other herd will do with a baby
Watching Khanyisa lay down is cute no big deal. Watching Tokwe leverage her body down and relax is truly impressive.

Wonderful and amazing the elephants feel safe enough and secure to relax thanks to Owen and Joshua. I believe the elephants have a connection of trust and confidence with their carers.

So cute to see Khanyisa's tiny trunk peeking out above Tokwe's huge body. And also seeing Pisa glom on to Timisa! It's so nice to see Timisa get affection, as an orphan she doesn't have the focused devoted love of a mother and since Khanyisa came she's no longer the baby of the herd. So it's so nice to see she still gets lots of love and support.
There's something extra heartwarming about this, seeing the big ones just relaxing for once, just relaxing. Then the kids have to come along & be pests!

I love watching the elephants! The gentleness they show one another is so heartfelt! They are a family that is watching out for each other, especially the babies. I started watching when you got Khanyisa, it’s been a journey I was happy to be on! My friend has always wanted to visit Africa I said I would go with her because her husband had no interest,so maybe someday we might get there. The countryside looks so beautiful, I can only imagine being there in person what it is like!

I have such gratitude for all HERD does to protect and care for such majestic and incredible, sentient beings. What a blessing it must be to work daily with them. What a treasure it is to witness such a beautiful moment between Tokwe and Khanyisa - and so many other individuals and experiences from your up-close perspective. Adine - you have answered viewer questions in the past about having a pro- documentarian from a commercial channel. I can't imagine having a more beautiful, natural, truly authentic experience from a commercial endeavor. I so enjoy hearing just what is happening with no music in the background or celebrity voiceover. It's a blessing to hear just the sounds of nature and relevant chats (and lullabies) from the only humans who are clearly part of the HERD. Your videos are a beautiful, peaceful and enjoyable part of every day for so many, including myself. In all the HERD videos I've watched, this is the first I've seen/heard an adult communicate in this specific way. The vocalizations are wonderful! I'll enjoy watching this again - their behaviors, body language and vocals are fascinating to observe in a way that I've never before seen. It's not only to play, but to get a rest from all that great weight that they haul around. It's a break from the strain on the bones and ligaments to take a break from and rest. Even for a few minutes, it's a relief.

I love it when the carers teach us about the behavior we're watching. When my son was a toddler I taught him about Love Touches. Just touches of affection as one walks by or passes behind. I have always loved elephants and really enjoy your videos I have learned a lot from them Khanyisa was full of herself today it was so cute when the large female sorry I’m bad with names laid down and the calf walked over to her and put her trunk on her so sweet thank you for sharing
It is so nice to see Tokwe take time for herself. Also, I loved the way she stretched and we saw the underside of her trunk because her tusks looked longer and so beautiful!
