      I've actually had very little success with Megs products. Whether it be 105/205 or even Ultimate Compound/Ultimate Polish.
      The compounds work, and paired with MF pads they do cut pretty well, but they do tend to scour the paint much more than competing products. I cannot for the life of me get M205 or Ultimate Polish to finish down, no matter what I try. Different pads, # of passes, different pressures, diluting them both.. They just haze the paint no matter what.
      Compared to the Griots BOSS system, I can't believe anyone still uses 105/205. The BOSS creams are undoubtedly more expensive, but man.. Fast Correcting Cream does SUCH a great job, and on my paint (that M205 scours) I can use Fast Correcting Cream with a light cutting pad and finish down LSP ready. It's seriously great stuff. Seems to have an infinite work time, produces no dusting, and smells great.
      Comparing M205 to Perfecting Cream isn't even fair in my eyes. Perfecting Cream just blows it away.
      I know this is supposed to be about Megs, and I got kind of side tracked, but I guess it seems relevant because when I was searching for compounds/polishes that I enjoyed using, I just kind of assumed the BOSS creams would be like "repackaged" M105/M205. I know that some guys have great success using Megs stuff, and I'm envious because compared to stuff like the BOSS creams it's super inexpensive.. But I'll be damned if the BOSS stuff isn't worth every dollar more.
      There's just too many great products available from Griots, 3D, Sonax, etc, to be wasting my time trying to make these dated Megs products work!

    I am an amateur DIY detailer who works only on my own vehicles. I have been an M105 and M205 user for more than a decade due to one fact: these products get the job done, virtually ANY job. However, your list of cons about M105 are spot on, and your comments have convinced me to try somerthing else. I look forward to digging through your archive of videos to help me figure out which I should go with. Thanks!!!

    I just restored the hood of my wife's 08 bmw, that thing was fucked up, scratches and deep hazing, I didnt think there was even clear coat on it. I used a porter cable sander with CB polishing pad. I damp the pad with distilled water and put 3 grape size drops of m105 and then 3 pea size drops of ultimate polish 2x2 sections, I did very long passes and spray some distilled water on the surface when it looked like it was drying up. Cleaned the pad with water in between passes. Then wipe it off with distilled water. The results were amazing to be honest I thought that hood was done.
    1st time I used m105 I was very frustrated with the dusting, but putting extra amount and lubrication it gives very good results

    The thing about the 105 is that it will be more easily available for most everyone since it is a retail product and not a specialty one like other better products which will require some hunting down to get ones hands on,Great video by the way! By the way really liked your advice on washing foam pads with out recommending any ones specialty products to clean them,we all know regular dish washing soap can do it but other folks will still try to push somebody's product to make a dime.

    Great advice to keep dusting down. I just dont understand why anyone would want to keep struggling using a product that dust way to much; compared to it's new design like correction compound d300 is so easy to use. With no dusting.

    Brian I'm with you on the Megs being a lil long in the tooth technology wise. I DETEST that the 105 dusts up so much, but it cuts fairly well. Not as good as others mind you..but alright. The 205 is a bit better in that it doesn't dust nearly as much and finishes well. These days I tend to lean more towards Scholl Concepts, Menzerna and Sonax. Thanks again for another informative video!

    Thanks for the video and the demonstration of using M105/205 even though there are better compounds formulas out there however the equation of getting a good shine can still be achieved with this variable. Im just starting off and am hesitant with using compounds, so after hours of TH-cam University classes and budget, I purchased these products first. Other detailers on TH-cam, like AMMO and Chromatic, they suggested the same as you did, keep it simple and learn how to use your products. Just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for the video and the tips/tricks on how to use products that most people have to finish before buying the newer products.

    I enjoy the way you approach the issues, this video was due and thanks for it. My only guess or reason, they won't change it or introduce a new compound is because it's the numbers, the sales. Remember when Coke soda changed the formula?, I've heard of people stocking a 2 car garage full of coke, with the fear they will never make it again. Maybe it's a not a fair comparison, and just a similar corporate fear of how the loyal fans will react. It works with minor issues. I still have quite a bit of ultimate comp and pol, it works, maybe it takes way longer to get results and I can use them for other applications. Your videos and comparison rankings helped me decide what my next purchase as far as paint correction will be. 👍🏻👍🏻

    Good review Apex. I’m not a megs fan of their compound & polish, but I’m not saying it’s bad. Everyone has what they prefer & what’s works for them. It if works for you, hey that’s great! As long as at the end of the day you are getting great results & you are happy with the results that you got. I’ve been using Menzerna & Sonax for years. And also some Jescar that I’ve been testing out. I do like the Jescar polish. But again every paint is different.

    There was a time when I used M105 fairly often; didn't know of another product that cut as quickly with as (relatively) fine finish. Well, times have changed and M105 hasn't. The dust. Oh, man. I still use M205 on occasion and once in a while add a bead of M105 to the pad for a bit more cut, but it's rare. Today there's no shortage of better and easier to work with abrasives.

    the reason you are not getting good results from the product is because you are using too little of it. If you look at the Meguire's tutorial videos they put ten times more product than you do when using them. That's why you have to spray stuff in the middle of the process to make up for the fact the little stuff you put in its gone, now you are just "diluting" it and then blame the product for ' not keeping up'. They are the makers, they are the chemists, they are the ones designed the product, they are the ones who know how to use it. I would recommend you follow their instructions and then see how the produce works for you.

  • @ww2717
    @ww2717 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Brian you have to check out the new smat compound and polish from Meguairs M-110 and M-210. The m-110 is all that 105 should have been years ago. No dusting and longer cycle time.

    • @ww2717
      @ww2717 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mix some m205 on the pad along with the m105. The polishing oils in m205 will give alot longer cycle time and reduce dusting.

  • @dcarrstar7719
    @dcarrstar7719 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The M105/M205 combo has always worked for me but the dusting can make you miserable. I detail in the elements so it's been a while since I've reached for my Mequiar's as I'm usually doing one steps with HD Speed, D166, or Sonax Perfect Finish. It's tried and true for me but old tech compared to what's out on the market today. I'm thankful to not have any horror stories about trashing paint because I've never been able to afford failing on a customer vehicle. I have to admit I am a Mequiar's fanboy just because when I knew nothing about detailing I still knew Meguiar's products, but I also get what you are saying... wipe off on a hot panel can be a bear to remove.

    Hey Brian, really like your Tips and Insights. I just got a Gallon of Megs D300 .. I heard it cuts like the M105, but has a lot less dusting, works better with Microfiber Pads. I'm eager to try it out. Maybe a theme for a future comparison video for your channel?

    • @dbk81
      @dbk81 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      D300 is a great product and absolutely less dusting, but it is also not on the same level of compounding as M105, you will do more work and end up with less of a result. Again, D300 is great, but when you are talking big time results, you need a big time product like 105.

    Brian, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. I don't detail cars but I do use the same products, tools and processes to polish epoxy and I have really learned a LOT from your videos. I am using a mirka da sander to get to the 3000 grit stage then a dewalt rotary for the cutting and polishing. Currently using megs 105 for compounding but as you say about the residue control driving you nuts I am there so going to try sonax cutmax and perfect finish on my next test. One thing I am sure you would appreciate is the the 1/8 INCH clear coat I get to work with in my projects and I don't worry about burning through believe me. Any other products (liquids and pads) that come to mind that are more tuned towards polishing a plastic like material would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Again and keep up the excellent work.

    Definitely dead on about the 205 experience, this product produced so much dust and it’s hard to get it off. Using it on a black car is going to be a nightmare since it produce so much haze and it’s not coming off easy. I did one section and I’m going to return this product, it’s not for me.

    Great video brother. I've heard to control the dusting utilize a little more product and have slightly faster passes so the product doesn't heat up and cause dusting, caking, and haze. I've never tried it but a few forums mention that by doing that 105 works fine, what's your thoughts on that? My guess is that is with utilizing a foam pad. @@apexdetail85 What do you recommend?

  • @BigBear--
    @BigBear-- 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Quick detail, you mention while doing the rear panel that you want to let the SMAT particles break down. M105 is supposed to be using non-diminishing abrasives, with the point being that the abrasive particles DON’T break down as you’re compounding. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, I’m just getting started on my DIY detailing experience (getting my cars prepped for Avalon King’s Armor IX - Ceramic Coating).
    I was planning to go with the M105 & M205 combo to prep the paint on my 2020 Honda Civic Si Coupe (in pearl white), and our 2017 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring (in gunmental grey). But I’m not married to the combo, if you have a better recommendation PLEASE let me know. I’ll primarily be using a 20 mm long throw DA polisher, I might do the small sections like doors sills, and front bumper ledges either by hand, or with a 3” rotary drill attachment pad. Please let me know if you know of a better combo for the paint prep for ceramic coatings.

    This video is an A+, its very educative because You can the see the difference between a regular DA and a long throw DA loke 21mm how easily removed all those marks, scratches, sure combining the correct pad. I need to ask you a question that is not related to this video. After using Meguiar's 3 in 1 wax, can I top that with a sealant or like can coat of Gyeon? Thanks in advanced for your help, Brian

    I currently have the m105 and 205 combo and the dusting is terrible. I use Griot's spray detail to try to keep it at a minimum. I currently just got into paint correction. What other two products would you suggest I trade these out for?

  • @briansansone
    @briansansone 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I tried for the first time today. I painted my hood, then flattened the paint with 2000. Then I went to the meguires. With a rotary/ foam pad. I tried to be a neat as possible, but I slung compound all over everything, and it stuck. Especially on trim/plastic. The “dust” was extremely hard to remove. It looks so easy watching a pro. I made a mess.
    Detailed spray? Or a product that doesn’t “dust “ or fly all over the place?

    Great products, but like you said; too much dusting. Using a DA I make only two slow passes with moderate pressure and that’s it. It cuts really fast for me like this. I keep the temperature down that way which of course is our enemy. Hopefully they put some kind of oily lube of some sort to control the dusting in the near future.

    I use 105/205 daily.. if worked correctly they can produce outstanding finishes.... but the dusting is f’n ridiculous! 105 = less passes, shorter working times with a WELL primed pad, keep pad clean or change out every panel to help control dusting...
    205 finishes perfect and wipes off like butter to me..

    I am cut and buffing a 2011 C6 Corvette that has fresh paint on rear quarters and hood. I started with 1200 and worked my way up to 2500 wet sand. I purchased the Maguiars 105 to finish up my cut and polish. First time doing this. What product do you recommend (I can take back the 105). I would like to end my project with a ceramic coat, so after I finish 12:51 the cut and buff do I add a polish or just a ceramic coat?

    Brian,
    First of all thanks for the honest videos I appreciate them and the info they provide.
    My question is if you were to recommend a compound and finishing polish or maybe a one step product for a first time da polisher owner (me). What products would you recommend? I have an old police car to practice on so I'm not to worried about harming the paint but with so many products to choose it's a bit overwhelming. I considered the meguiers from your most recent video but with the dusting and the other quirks wasn't sure if that's the easiest (most fool proof) I should try. Really just looking to get my feet wet. Thanks

I wound up buying a small bottle of 105 only because I didn't shop for long enough (AKA: watching 30 more videos ;), but next time I'll get a non-105, either the megs above or sonax/menzerna-jescar.

    Hi, Great videos! I'm picking up a 2012 White Nissan Leaf this week and want to use your techniques for making the paint look as good as possible. I have a 700 rpm Torq X random orbital and will use Meguiars 100 Polish followed by 200. Can you recommend the right pads to use in each step, and also, I'm considering a ceramic wax topcoat after the whole job is done. Another question, do I need to use a clay bar prior to the two polishing steps? Hopefully, this car has good paint and has been kept outnof the sun! Thank you!

    Should i bring it to the painter to coat it before i do the compound or polishing process?

    I am attempting to take orange peel out of a PPG Delfleet single stage I have used both 105 and 205 and also 3M trizact number one and 2 wool first then foam. Looking down the panel it’s like glass, looking strait at the panel from a 90 degree, there is cloudiness or haze in the white. What am I doing wrong?
